Hey, I'm an antique too!

Guys, VRCHS (Verches) sounds good to me. JCZANKL and myself discussed this to some small degree a few nights ago. A suggestion he had was to start a web site and forum specifically for the vintage hardware as he knows someone that's good at setting up this sort of site. He'll have to chime in here and say something about that.

It really ticks me off to see an antique car tag on a 1980 car.

Try 1982! I recently saw some SUV with vintage tags and couldn't believe my eyes. This vehicle looked maybe 10 years old, if

Vintage in helicopter terms should mean that the heli was originally sold as FIXED PITCH. Of course, you would have to exclude the little plastic electric heli's.

No, I wouldn't restrict the definition in that way because throughout heli history FP heli's have been mixed in with CP machines. I do think that in the actual flying aspect there's the FP, FP with gyro, CP, CP with gyro to help define the groups. Gyros make or break the comfort level of any vintage heli. I dare anyone fly my DB Hughes 300 with the gyro off and say it's easy! I'll bet any other gyroless heli would be more flyable. Well, my Whirlybird has to be the easiest

heli_headcase, you are the only person that I have ever seen land a Dubro.

Does this mean you've seen other lift them off and not return? LOL!!

Quote
Do you remember that guy that used to machine his own heli's from scratch. There was a construction article in which he used a Bonner 4RS radio (smallest at the time).

The mention of the Bonner radio points to John Burkham (deceased). Otherwise I'd say Gene Rock or Fay Peoples. Gene is still around, maybe I should point him to this thread. Anyone in contact with Fay?

Faye taught me to fly gliders years ago when he was flying that home built heli of his. Even he couldn't get my Revolution 40 in the air!

Does an early Hawk count? I guy showed up at our field this summer with a Hawk that had an 8mm mainshaft (looked like a long spindle to me), a 4 channel Futaba conquest, no gyro and a mechanically mixed collective off the S-28 throttle servo (!). I managed to get it in the air but I swear there was some sort of magnetic force repelling the tail from the current position it was in, no matter what position it was at. I decided to land it when the guys in the pits were taking up a pool on how long it'd take for me to wreck it. total time in the air was like 20 seconds. He said that now he'd seen it fly he would install an RX for his DX7 and a gyro.

...yep...

Gene sounds like the guys name. He may have some old pictures. This was probably mid 60's. I think it weighed about 2.5 lbs. and had a Cox Tee Dee 049. The Bonner with 4 servos weighed about a pound.

John Burkham...

...is the guy you describe. His homebuilt, Cox Medalion .049 heli holds the world's first FAI RC heli duration record of 5.5sec. I filmed this event in May 1969. Unfortunately I gave the film to someone so it could be added to a compilation of old heli film footage and haven't heard back. I think it's time to do some asking, yes?

Add to this info is the papers from the 12th Annual DCRC Technical Symposium in which John documented his heli research and development. I was very lucky to be there at that event (was just getting into RC in early 1969) and witness John's record attempt. The heli used for the attempt was named "Super Suzie". Collective pitch, three-blade main rotor, string for a belt to drive the tail rotor, no gyro and no clutch on the engine.

I dunno..Of course that puts the Raptor 30V1 right in there too. And really by this time helis had matured to the point we still see them today, with some parts size changes and some more CF but for the last 10yrs there really hasnt been anything designed that would seem as revolutionary as the era the heli learned to fly upside down.
I think that about 1980 was smack dab in the middle of the action. In the 5-8yrs before, helis were really shaping up and getting more controlable all the time but they needed some else, dedicated, powerful heli engines and electronics. Thats why the next 5-8, maybe 10yrs after 1980 were so pivotal. Engines, radios, gyros, servos and batteries just went thru the roof in terms of design and power and some great helis were developed to take advantage of the boom.

The Hawk was more of a joke, but I wonder if a Concept DX or blue Shuttle could count as "classics" but not antiques, like the 1980 Citation

Antique Website

I would love to do something of this sort. But there is time and effort envolved for any individual. Steve and I talked somewhat about this sort of thing a few nights ago, and we both agree that someone with some organization skills should be in charge.

On that note, I have a friend that can do a website specifically for the Antique,Classic, style of helicopters, to post video, pics, etc. I am not sure what he charges for that sort of thing, but I for one would like to see this take off. So I think we should start a "club". A club name as V.R.C.H.S. as Cyclic Fever metioned is a good start. Now we just have to organize get some layouts if you will of what we would like to have on the web site.

Catigories
Kalt
Kavan
GMP
Hirobo
Morley
DuBro
Schluter
American RC
Kyosho

Forums,Pic,Video

Anybody have anything else they would like to mention?

I would like this to be widely used if we spend the time and money involved in getting something like this started.

TDriver
The Shuttle should be considered a classic, as it came out middle to late 80's. GMP brought that helicopter over as a ARF. To compete with the Kyosho DX that was also selling as a ARF.

Just my 2 cents.

Quick "Shuttle vs Concept" note

Hey JC,

The little blue Shuttle hit our shores in 1985 but the Concept 30 was much later, 1988. I'm not so sure about the Kalt Baron 20 though, it may predate the Shuttle and be the main reason the Shuttle came to be.

Anyone else know more about Kalt? I'm very fuzzy on their history.

Everyone that wants to be a part of V.R.C.H.S., say "AYE"! (eye, I, oh just raise your hand OK?)

That's in great condition! But I have to ask, where did the aluminum blade grip plates come from? My KKK 300 has the same plates and I thought they were home made. Guess not...

To quote Stimpy "Ohhhh Joy!" Well I'm glad you guys like my sugested name for our new SIG but, we should think about making sure we refer to it as a potential SIG when there is talk to IRCHA and AMA to give it more weight. I dontknow yet what it would take to get a new SIG formed but I'll look into it.

Wait a min..JC, your talking to Milnor right? Heck he's the guy with the answers. Let us know what he says. I've been poking around on AMA's site and found the VR/CS web site http://www.vintagercsociety.org/ and another for SAM http://www.antiquemodeler.org/index2.html To give a few examples of how the plankers are doing it.

Until someone calls it off I'd say it's a go. I'm planning on dragging six vintage heli's, all designed prior to 1980, out there.

By the way, there are now two PM's from me to you pending. Please read them. Thanks.
