Help with antique

Someone locally showed me an antique helicopter that they claim was purchased at a garage sale dirt cheap many years ago. I believe it was a Dubro 300 with an Ohlsson and Rice (spelling, never seen the name in writing) converted to glow. The helicopter would need a canopy, but I believe all else is there and intact.

Anyone have the willingness and knowledge to help me bring this machine back to life?

I'd like to put a gyro on it. Can these old mechanics/linkages and today's modern gyros work happily together?

The Ohlsson and Rice is valuable and can be put back to ignition. Would be interesting to see. The O&R dates from the late 1938-39 to mid 40's. It is actually in reproduction now for about $400. My dad has several and uses them in SAM freeflight.

Yeah I know him, that's Steve Peretz a REALLY NICE guy. He did an excellent job on that Du-Bro. I have a couple H-300 and a Tri-Star. I would deff like to see the Antique stuff have a few minutes at IRCHA to show everyone what it was like to be at a Fun Fly 10-15 years ago.

With how HUGE the hobby is getting, it’s only inevitable I think that there will be a specialized vintage section of the hobby, just like the plankers have. Have you ever noticed on the AMA and local club renewal forms, they list like 10 different forms of the planker hobby (giant scale, pylon, indoor, electric, etc.) but only list “helicopter” as if it were a sub-genre of model aviation? Well, with the turnout of IRCHA last year and our new AMA president, I think those days will soon be over. It’s amazing to see the amount of interest heliheadcase is getting over on the main forums. So many folks are into crazy 3D, that when something different comes along, like a DuBro 505, people are truly intrigued. Vintage heli may be the first viable “sub-genre” of the hobby! I think an official vintage fun fly at IRCHA 2008 would be not only very popular, but also very newsworthy, and generate great interest and press coverage. So many folks have no idea what came before all the bling and carbon fiber we have today!

My ears are BURNING!!!!

OK, looks like I better start making IRCHA plans for '08 and drag some vintage iron out there. Let me answer the PM I received from Tyler and then I'll be back, OK?

PS: dialarotor,

That Kyosho is only 16 years old max. I own a bunch of them. Way too new and easy to fly. BZZZTTT!

I've got a GMP Cobra I am planning to have in the air by next spring. Since I am also planning on attending IRCHA, I will bring it along in support of the topic. If it is old enough? What was it....early to mid 80's??? Will this do it?

hey Heli Headcase, it is the oldest one I have left, I just arranged the sale/trade of 2 Helistars and a Kalt Whisper to JC Zankl, gave away 2 Hoverstars, and I don't have my Cricket, Rebel, or Blue Shuttle anymore. So you let me fly some of that old iron you are bringing to IRCHA. Have flown the American Mantis, Revolution, Baron 28, Champion before.?
If it predates carbon fiber, the OS 32 SX or .61SX, it should be getting old enough. Wood Blades a must. We could have a old timey forum on blade building and balancing. Where is that Fastcal and jumbo shrink tubing.

Bring it and they will watch!!

JC is the "CD"

OK JC, if you want to include "modern" heli's that fine.

A bunch of years ago, maybe 8, I was compiling a list of vintage heli's for a "1980 and earlier" vintage event. The list was posted to the old "H-List". I was trying to provide the models that I thought would qualify for this era and typed these for all list members to judge.

FP = Fixed Pitch
P&B = Pod and Boom
CP = Collective Pitch

~Schluter: (Original)
Bell Huey Cobra, FP, Scale
DS-22 "Enstrom 28", FP, Scale
Gazelle, CP, Scale
Helibaby, FP, P&B
Super Helibaby, CP, P&B
Bell 222, FP, Scale (Early Heliboy mechanics)
Heliboy, CP, P&B
SX-81, CP, P&B
Cheyenne, CP, Scale
Bolkow BO-105, CP, Scale (probably after 1980)
HeliStar, CP, P&B (probably after 1980)

~Hegi: (Took over Schluter's Cobra Production)
Bell Huey Cobra, FP, Scale

~Du-Bro:
Whirlybird 505, FP, P&B
Hughes 300 1.34 engine, FP, Scale
Shark 1.34 engine, FP, P&B
Tri-Star, FP, Scale (Sort of...Rotorway Scorpion body is stock.
Enstrom F28 and Hughes 500 were available as body kits.)
Shark 60, FP, P&B
Hughes 300 w/ 60 conversion kit, FP, Scale
Shark 60 w/ collective conversion, CP, P&B

~Graupner:
Bell 212 'Twin Jet', CP, Scale
Bell 47, FP, Scale

~Kavan:
Bell Jet Ranger, CP, Scale (All versions prior to factory flybarless)
Alouette II, FP, Scale
Alouette II, CP, Scale
"Ranger", CP, 'Silhouette' Scale (Flying Lunch Box! May be too late)
Lockheed 286, CP, Scale (May be after 1980)

~Kalt:
Kalt 450, FP, Scale (Baby Schluter Cobra)
Bell Jet Ranger, CP Scale
Can anybody add more?

~Hirobo:
Falcon, CP, P&B
Falcon 505, CP, P&B
Falcon 707, CP, P&B
Gazelle, CP, Scale
Mini-Star 025, FP, P&B

~GMP:
Competitor, CP, P&B
Cricket, FP, P&B
Cricket Hughes 300, FP, Scale
Cobra, CP, P&B (Have to check dates. May be too late.)

~American R/C Helicopter:
Rev-O-Lution, FP, P&B (.40 powered)
Rev-O-Lution II, FP, P&B (.60 powered)
Mantis, FP, P&B (.40 powered)
Super Mantis, CP, P&B (.40 powered)
Commander, CP, P&B
Eagle, CP, P&B

~Micro Mold:
Lark, FP, P&B
Lark II, FP, P&B

~Morley:
Hughes 300, CP, Scale (Don't know the date of this one)

~Horizon Helicopters:
Horizon 60, CP, P&B (Flybarless and Flybar models)

This list was specifically limited to 1980 and earlier because I felt 1980 was right at the time when "modern" helicopters really hit the market. Machines earlier then that had a more primitive aspect and therefor more difficult (more of a challenge) to fly. It's from this group that I'd pick to show everyone.
