As a die-hard Chinook lover it's definitely on my list, I can't really see spending a ton of money on the Hirobo one & a smaller electric fits my needs better anyways...

In the process of building one right now ,,and it looks really great and builds really easy . If it flies anything like the Trex that it is made from it should be a great little flyer ... hope to have a hover test in the garage this weekend !! will try to let you know what I think of it then .

Sure looks like it would be easy to lose orientation at any distance (front to back). Guess you just have to concentrate and not let your eyes and brain get in an argument on which way it's pointed.

I have always loved the Chinook as well. I currently fly a 90 size 500D "Little Bird" but fields big enough for this nitro bird are kind of far from my house. I wanted to get a smaller electric so I could fly in front of the house any time I want to, so I got on Joe's waiting list for the "TwinRex". Joe should be shipping mine in the next couple of weeks. I will post pics when it is done.

For helping with orientation, I was thinking about going for the MH-47 look with a refuel probe sticking out front - figure I'll need all the help I can get with the lack of any color variation.

If I wanted to get fancy I could always paint it to match an old CH-47C I used to crew back in the 80's that was kinda rough - mismatched colors on various panels & a lot of touch-up work

Orientation Problem!!!

I am looking forward to hearing how the one goes this weekend for HFr....
I have the Hirobo Vertol and I gotta tell you, I don't think I can even "blink" when I am flying it...(just kidding!!!)
When I was doing the test flights and set up without the fuse on, it was a bit tricky, but you could see the tuned piped (shiny!!!) and that was about the only thing.... but once the fuse went on, it is not a big problem since the heli will fly with the "front" up a bit in slow flight or the rear up in FF.. just takes a bit of getting used to...
I am on the waiting list too, so I will be keeping an eye on this thread.....

Thanks a lot Stan !!!... for both this quote and the wish for good luck ... I have to many other expensive birds to quit flying them
I am sure going to need the wish for good luck too for this weekend as now I have arrived at the hard part ... setting up the controls and I am not at all unacustom to twin rotors ( had / still have Joes first Dragonfly tandem !!!)

Any one looking to get into mini tandem helis for $300.00 with electrics ????

Guess I am just getting to old to comprehend instructions any more

It is in the air tonight ....at about 6:00 pm ... It needs some wiring rework and cleaned up a lot ,,but it flies !!!

One word ----------------------- AWESOME
It is 22 degrees here and snow with 25 to 35 mph gusty winds .. so i am in the garage ,,but it is great .

Joe has out done himself with this one ,,it was well worth the wait and I don't even have it close to probably trimmed yet as it doesn't hang to long by itself ,,but is getting closer .

I have a total of 9 packs thru it now and am playing with the DCP yaw adjustment .

I also only have 2 4S batteries ,,so 1 each round has a 3S (3 chargers too ) ,,,and if I setup a copy of the program in my 9303 and adjust the throttle curve up it hovers almost better on the 3 S and getting 10 mins and only putting back around 980 mah ,course I was down alot doing adjustment ..


The JGF 500 T just sets there and purrs ,,without even hardly feeling warm at the end .. I haven't put on my logger yet ...to excited to bother with the exactness of it yet.

I am going to enjoy this bird alot ,, my next to favorite bird and it lifts off nose first ,,just way to cool ,,,this is about as much excitement as a 61 yr old gets anymore and probably about all I can handle too

Thank you for posting your info.... it sounds like you are having a LOT of fun... and I like those nose high take offs too!
See what I mean about it becoming a FAST FAVORITE though
Who ever it was that coined the phrase: Two heads are better then one, must have had one of these machines!!!!: I am in the same boat as you with a lot of other high end heli's to fly, but once you get this dialed in and moving around it is hard to not want to fly it, and it sounds as if you are not too far from that already... guess these "older" minds can still function when we push them!!!

Glad you liked the picture of the Vertol... it gets a lot of attention wherever I take it... most people say that they have never seen one or if they did it only hovered!!!! Not this one

The Army trucks are owned by an 81 year old neighbor that still has his own Cessna 172 and runway and he lets me and my friends use the field just so there is some activity going on there. He loves to come over and see the MANY different things (heli's and planes) that we fly....and it is located about 3-4 minutes from my house, so it is also VERY convenient.....

Keep that info coming and some pic's too....

Thanks and yes it is nice to have a field close .. mine is also 5 mins away .

Wife works 6pm to 6 am in hospital and so she is sleeping right now ... and bedroom is walled up to the garage ...as it is bad outside now ... later when she gets up and goes to work I will try to get some by myself .. but nothing special as it is a two car garage .
Also won't bore you all with a bunch of pix but here is a couple of my newest pride and joy

Well the wife got up late and didn't have time to hold the camera ..and it didn't make any difference as the video camera's battery went south ( probably for the cold winter we are having here )

But I did get you a small footage of close quarters flight of the tandem ... with my Minolta digital camera ,,,not the best and it only takes 30 secs. before it has to store it and shuts down .
But here is the vid ,,,and I promise to get a new video camera battery .

I also am having trouble getting the CC gov. to work right ... so in this footage I was on throttle curve settings too.. and had went back to normal mode on the DCP gyro instead of HH ,,trying to smooth out things and had to start over from scratch .

It looks as if you are well on your way.... to have that flying in that tight of a space tells me something is working right!!!! Doesn't look as if it will take a lot of time to get it dialed in for forward flight once you can get outside where you can let it move a little more...
Looks great and thanks for the footage....
Could you list the actual equipment that you are using when you get a little time??
That really does look like a "side" project for me this winter!!!! (alone with ALL the others that I have planned)

Yes the vid was the 4 th pack and I was already feeling comfortable enough to do a little slow forward flight in that tight area . I even tried a slow tail rotor turn // it dropped its nose ,,but it didn't like that ,,,thought I was going to get the garage door .Now I know why Joe put -4 degrees of collective in it

I LIKE IT

I wasn't going to get a fuse this yr for it ,,until I got use to flying it ..but I think that will be changing ...if I can find the time to fix up a fuse and paint it .Maybe I can do a quick and dirty one just for fun flying and then buy another for next winter to really deck out .

Here is what I have in it
TH-2 (this is left out of the kit I guess in case you want to use a different mixer )
1 of Tech models extender boards ..for the front servo power /signal suppy
Just Go Fly 500 T (12 pole) 1950 KV with a 13 T pinion ..was going to use the 12 but didn't have one .
CC pheonix 35 ESC ,,several ferrite rings
6 Hitec 65 MG servos ...probably could get by with 65 KB
Medusa 3.5 Amp BEC
Berg 6 channel RX
2- Futaba GY 240 gyros
2 sets of Align 325 wood blades for now ...probably will go with Joes special blades later as they are cheaper ,,but had these laying around from my rexy
Tp 3S 2100 and TP 4S 2150 batteries ,,,and just got 3 -4S Air Thunder batteries today that I want to try ,,I like their replacement policy ,,as I have ruined two TP 5S 5000 MAH's on my E Bergen heli this yr and one 4S TP 3750 on my swift ...so having the replacement cost cut in half sure would be nice .
I know ,,,don't crash ,,but when your 300.00 German made Actro 32 -3 looses magnets in an inverted hovering /piroet manuver only 10 feet off the ground it ain't going to be pretty .
Hope this helps ya ... I hope to get some readings off the Amp monitor this next weekend ,,,if the wife will let me play again (this weekend she doesn't work all weekend )

Nothing has went right this weekend ...new battery in video ... no program on the computer any more since last virus to upload the movie to ...
Eagle tree logger program gone too and won't load right ...
Tried to get some footage flying and lost a main gear due to the CC glitching and speeding up extra quick on start up for some reason ... Just not my weekend ... maybe next weekend ,,,as I had a pretty busy week to and just need to stop and relax

Gorn ,, I am going to do that ... but plan on waiting for Joe (Tech models) to do the research and get the best setup for 3 bladed heads ... I have done enough with some of the cheap trex heads to know that there is a difference and I want the best on this neat little bird .
So unless some one wants to send me two free ( or even 1/2 price ) heads to do the testing on I am going to wait for the market ones coming from Joe ,,as these heads ( even the cheap made ones ) aren't cheap
