charging an A123 pack at 3 amps means after the voltage is stacked to reach 36v in the charger, its pulling 9 amps from the battery. (36v x 3a is 108 watts, and 108 watts / 12v = 9 amps.

That could quickly drain a car battery if you charge several in a row. I recommend leaving the car idling when charging high voltage packs.

Dave I have a pretty extensive stereo that has a dedicated second battery that is isolated from the car battery so I never had to worry about killing the main......Ron

just get a deep cycle batt I use mine and run a 6amp charger to top it off. And getting a gel cell deep cycle I think they a 20amp hr batteries. I am talking about the sprial cell batts. It made my trolling motor last 1.5 times longer and also ran better on them.

what is deep cycle battery? do you have any names, prices? someone at my field mentioned marine battery, not sure what they are either

dave, the reason i would prefer not to use the car battery (while idling), is at my field it is a bit difficult. i have heard that i can get 4 or 5 charges without draining the 12volt battery (that is basically all i will need anyhow). after each day of flying, there the 12volt battery needs to be charged.

A deep cycle battery is a marine type battery that is designed to discharged to it's lowest and recharged over and over again without hurting the battery. Basically you run a FUSED (100amp) (+)4awg wire to a 100 amp relay that is only switched on when the car is in the ignition position. That is then connected to the (+) post of the marine battery in the rear of the car and then the (-) of the rear battery is grounded to the frame of the car. That's basically it! The battery is charged every time you crank and run the car and it is completely isolated from the front main battery....Ron

Yes they would but you would probably get a better deal at your local car audio shop. The most expensive part is the battery....Ron

Why not just buy a portable generator and only fill it up every once in a while?

Either will work well but the second battery will always be there and you will never have to load it in the car....Ron

I know most marine batt are sealed but buy a battery case just to make sure there are no accidents. I have a battery leak all over the inside of a mini van it melted the carpet and stinks as well thank god the lease co didnt see it during the inspection. but the cxases are like 10$ and well worth it + offers a carry handle too easyer to carry.

I have seen coolers with wheels and handles that some have converted into their field box...also seen same concept for tools...use your imagination...it does not have to be from a hobby store or supplier.

Even a couple of wheels from an old lawnmower and a couple of 2x4 is a start.

No problem. Use a battery box also. They are about $5 and protect against any accidents...Ron
