Why are they called "chinese weights"? What do the chinese have to do with this, anyway?

I've read somewhere, I forgot where to find it, that there was a time when the weights being used was shaped like like the "hat the farmers wear in china", for aerodynamic purposes....... And the name stuck......

aakee, I understand the purpose of the weights. I don't know why they are called "chinese weights". Why not "swedish weights" or "canadian weights" or just "counterbalance weights" (or something equally descriptive).

The posts by Boidman and Tail_BoomStrike might contain a clue.

Where can I find a jig to drill the tailgrips?

I was searching mods and just happened upon this page.

Because of the crappy stock gyro on my bird (soon to be replaced),
I had been trying to come up with a balancing system for the tail rotors.

I couldn't quite wrap my mind around it and gave up,
but this page has re-ignited my interest.

Has anyone tried this mod centered on the "head steady" pitch as
heli_headcase showed (being used on older helis)?

I'd look more carefully at the "crappy, stock servo" in this case. Don't be afraid to experiment, there's always something to be learned.

If you've read through most of this thread you should have a good idea of what to do. Report back with your finding.

Good luck.

After much pondering upon the forces involved here,
I decided to give it a try (the basic version that just goes through the tailblade screw).

I gave it a few minutes of hovering in the back yard,
and the preliminary results are quite good.

It seems that the primary effect is that the weight stabilizes the tail (to one side or the other) removing the dreaded slop found in these small scale cheap choppers.

I will post more after I go out and fly for real (when the wind dies down a bit).

You need to put the weights on both sides of the grips.

Why?

I've already explained it from my perspective somewhere either earlier in this thread or one linked to it.

That's how dad did it, that's how America does it, and its worked out pretty well so far.

A. I don't have screws long enough for that.

B. Though I can't be sure what the desired result is exactly,
I have achieved increased stability as it is,
so why would I want to take it farther.

The slop is gone from the tail,
once I get a heading lock gyro,
it will be all gravy.

It's much easier to spell chinese than it is to spell "Ahmadinejad", thus "chinese".

Imagine an "Ahmadinejad" 1.5mm hex screw, if you strip the screw it explodes.

When you call tech support, you are informed that it never happened.

And that if you were to call again with such heresy, a "double secret probation fatwah" will be issued with respect to your "problem".
