RunRyder Member Service > When will "back" work well in Firefox?

There is generally only one thing that annoys me every time I browse runryder, and that is why can not the back button take me to the position on the page where I was at, but instead goes back to the top? In long threads, after looking at a photo or link, re-finding where I was always takes a long time (well, relatively speaking, it's the only site I know that does this).

I can get around the problem by always opening links in another tab, but sometimes I forget...

Is the problem that in the current implementation, re-loading of ads requires a new version of the same page?

Karl.

Works for me....

Most likely, it's your browser setting to always reload pages. FWIW, I'm using IE7 with Check For Newer Pages set to Automatically. It could also be a corrupted cache, or proxy behavior as well.

IE is not an option for me, but you are right, it does work fine there.

EDIT: I can not seem to find such an option in Firefox. I thought I did and it was set to auto, but can not seem to find it now. The problem is the same on all my computers with Firefox, no proxy, and cache clearing does not help. I tried another computer though, without any extensions installed, where it worked fine. I will investigate.

It seems to always be a problem in Firefox, when logged in. When not logged in, it works.

Yes, most of the time I "open in new tab", but sometimes forget...
And it's not only pics, but generally going from topic to topic, thread to thread, page to page, and then back, within runryder.

You need to click the flashing PM or the blue NEW SUBS link. With either one lit, the page is flagged as No-Cache and is reloaded completely when backed into.

That works.

I always click to remove the flashing PM, but never clicked the NEW link until now.

Thanks!

Changing browser is not an option for me. I have too many useful extensions and customizations in Firefox.

On the browser topic, it seems the Firefox's behavior in this situation is more standards compliant than the other two. If a page is marked as "no-cache", it should probably be reloaded. Now, whether or not everyone thinks this is always a good idea, is another topic. In this case, I would have personally liked the pages not to be marked as "no-cache", especially when they are only removed when actually clicking on them, not when all PM or subs have been read, but I won't argue that I guess it's useful to always get to see these special two links when they have changed.

Thanks. I was searching high and low using various combinations of "firefox extension back forward reload cache no-cache", but could not find it...

The extension works with the back button in the browser, but not with the mouse buttons I have assigned to back and forward. Strange, probably a bug in that extension.

To correct what I wrote about standards compliant in this case, all the other browsers I have tried (IE, Safari, Opera) remember the scroll position with the NoCache flag set.

This is actually a bug in Firefox first reported in 2003, and still unfixed. How sad!

Here is the firefox bug report:

Firefox extension fixed

I emailed the author of the "Restore Scroll Position" extension, Mike Hokenson, about the problem with it working only with the toolbar navigation buttons, and not other mechanisms for navigating backwards and forwards. He was kind enough to spend time re-writing part of the extension, and it now works in all cases. Finally, navigating runryder works the way it's supposed to in Firefox!

He will release the new version in a few weeks. In the meantime it is available here:
