I finally was able to record some of the video that I've been doing when flying FPV with my Quick 500 EX helicopter. I'm using a DX7 with AR7000 RX with a 900mhz downlink system. I just started FPV piloting a few weeks ago and am getting the hang of it. It's fun, so fun that I even wanted to try it at night. I did my first night flight from inside my vehicle at the local park and it's alot harder at night than it is during the day.

A few of my FPV flights:

I had a crash when I was flying FPV a few days ago. I'm not exactly sure what happened but I think it was due to a DX7 lockout. I was sitting under a thick tree at the field and it was pretty busy with others using there DX7's. Then only thing I could think of was a lockout which happened twice. Fortunately the only thing I broke was a skid.

I would like to congratulate you on your piloting skill. You do take some chances flying so low between bushes i can only imagine you are confortable with it but flying over car traffic on streets is really taking chances. What Tx power are you using for the video downlink, what type of antennas?Don't forget it's not only lockouts of your RC control that can send you down but also loss of video can spell disaster and by that i mean especially going down on a street on wich there is traffic.

happy uneventfull flying

That was crazy. Especially the lockout, it looked like you did a blade stop auto

I did not fly over the street. I turned around before I got to it because of the risk. I would have probably went further but did not want to take that chance of crossing the street. I do have to admit that I did do something that I won't be doing again and that was flying anywhere near people. Even though I wasn't that close, it's still not safe and I do understand the risk so I will not be doing that again.

As far as the risk of flying low between the bushes in an open field, the only risk I see there is losing my heli which is lot better than hitting people or property. I just need to get an alarm for it so that I can find it in the brush if it does happen to go down.

I'm using a 500mw 900mhz video downlink system with an 8dbi patch antenna from Hobby Wireless. Sometimes it's clear and soemtimes it's really bad depending on the area and time of day. For some reason, it's really bad at night compared to day in the same area.

I got to say it again i'm impressed with your skill. In the video at night hovering on the driver side of your SUV controlling the altitude and barely drifting around, i wish i could be that good. And i'm amazed with fact that you get such broad beam from one antenna.I'm using a Helicommand to help stabilise my heli and i'm nowhere near your proficiency.I hope i didn't sound too harsh pointing out the fact that it's dangerous to fly especially over that side street. It can be really costly if something goes wrong. If you trust your radio link and video link,if you know the area and don't encounter any interfference i supose there is no harm crossing a street up high but i wouldn't risk it.I'm too chicken probably. And in flying low and fast between obstacles i was reffering to the chance of loosing the video link or hitting something and crash the heli.It seems like a capable machine it would be a pitty to ruin it.
Well, to each his own or something like that.

It takes serious confidence in the equipment to pull that off. Obviously the video has never died in flight, yet.

Heli Video

Try some shielding and ferrite beads for noise suppression. Also check to see that the orientation of the downlink antenna is verticle (I don't know what your antenna or heli is) but check to see that somewhere it is radiating downward. Also it sounds like a electric heli, try to shorten you leads to the controlling servos and make sure they are snapped together tight - if they are loose they create noise.

I went through several evolutions of video downlink, I'm in the communications electronics business, other wise than that Whooohooo! I flew over top the soy beans and between trees in a demonstration to DHS. They watched the video, I sweated the flight, eveything came out fine and the video downlink a mile away was crystal clear.

Up, up and away!

That is cool ! I understand what you are doing, but what do the letters FPV stand for ?

Support bacteria. They're the only culture some people have. !

Thanks for the comments everyone.

BigD, what type of shielding would you recommend to cut down on the noise? Also I have my downlink antenna pointed out to the side of the heli towards the rear since I usually fly low to the ground. If I have it pointed downward, wouldn't that reduce the range at low alt? I never heard of the ferret bead thing.

or has experience ?

You get the minimum signal when 2 antennae are pointing directly at each other, and the max. when both are parallel (assuming ordinary stick antennae).

Most of the energy from the antenna is radiated sideways, so you want it to be pointing in the direction that is the least useful. Which is probably down.

Dino17 the camera from the link you posted is one of the best if not the best for FPV only it's heavy and bulky. The most popular is the KX131 wich is small, lightweight has good resolution and colour rendering and handles quick light changes very well. Here is what it looks like.

Hi guys

I am a newbie to FPV and would like some help please. What sites can I find information and also where I can buy this equipment.

Please could you suggest what goggles, cameras, gimble and headtracker unit is good value for money. I dont want to spend a fortune but at the same time I dont want to buy something that isnt going to work.

Please help me with any information that I might need to know like video range problems and cameras that deal with changing light etc.

Regards
Jason

Dino,

The video quality on the downlink is much better than what is seen on YouTube. I believe YouTube uses video compression which reduces the quality quite a bit.

Does anybody have experience with Diversity Receiver
http://www.fpvvideo.com/toppage2.htm

Where can I buy it and how mach is it ?
Jumpjet, do you think it will be good advantage to have device like that?

andrei , I am going to use this camera on 90 size heli and do not think the weight is a problem .

That model seems a bit limited. For better results, U would need multiple transmitters in addition to multiple receivers.

DINO that device is the next best thing you can get after the Kx 650.You'll need two receivers and two patch antennas to make the most of it.Here is my set up and it works like a charm.I preffered it over the other diversity devices because i can use whatever frequency and manufacturer i choose whatever comes in handy. There are other types of with the receivers encompassed but as far as i know they are on 2.4GHz only and there is some incompatibility among channels used by the two main module suppliers, Lawmate and Airwaves.I believe they use slightly different frequencies. The Oracle as is called will give you more flexibility.I chose to use 2.4 even though that means i can't use it for RC control for the sole purpose that the only self contained receivers i was able to find were in this frequency.Otherwise i would've had a mess of wires, extra connections and batteries to worry about and i preffer to keep things simple and neat as much as possible. It has two video outputs and i'm using an Archos for recording and goggles for flying.I'll PM you with some more info.
later
