very interesting, so u just set the temp u want your engine to run and it will lean it or richen it to maintain that temp. This is very cool since my engine adj ability with helis sucks and i cant ever tell if im rich or lean enough. Where can i buy it and how much does it cost

GrandRC has them for around $63 I think - well worth the investment in my opinion.

does this thing come with good instructions? every single heli electronic equipment I get has horrible setup instructions.

The instructions are fine and setup is very simple.

what about wearing the needle out? it has threads and I was wondering how much is actually moves the needle once its is set. It is after all just a screw and if u work them enough they wear

it will wear out the o-ring if that much. I would replace it every 6 months just for safety reasons but its not even proven its necessary

The carb smart moves maybe between 1/4 and a 1/2 turn

I'm sure the piston will wear out well before the needle

Not on my engines... I already had a leaky carb once (way before carbsmart appeared though)

At maximum gain it takes 4 seconds for the 60 degree servo sweep
So it's not likely to wear the needle or the o ring out
(certainly not quickly any way)

It is however likely that your ring and piston will last longer
(due to keeping a lid on 130 degree peaks that occur without the CarbSmart)
and this saving is much greater than the cost of the o ring

Yhe engine performance with the carb smart is surprisingly good

I would have sworn the instruction said 4C difference for a full sweep and not 4 seconds but I might be wrong

Yep and it won't work properly at 75% gain on a YS... those needles are too sensitive so you need to turn gain down to about 50% for perfection

tchavei:

Have you noticed that the carbsmart doesn't "appear" to work at higher temp settings? Let me give an example of what I am seeing:

I started mine at 90C with 50% gain. After doing some tic-toc's and full climbouts, I would bring it in and notice the the carbsmart had the needle at the full rich position, then move back over to full lean shortly after. I reset to 100C, and did the same thing. This time, when I brought it in the needle was still at full lean. Since the set point was a little higher, could it have been at the ruch setting, then moved back to the lean before I could get it back down? I have used a temp gun, and the engine has not been over the set point. Any thoughts? BTW, I am using on an OS Hyper.

Thanks!

The higher the setting, the faster it returns to the lean position as your fan is cooling the engine quite fast.

My ideal setting is 110C right now and I havn't seen the needle in the full rich position yet. However, after analysing the charts, it sure is working as my temperatures oscilate between 118C and 105C ending up with a flight average of 110.9C... incredible huh?

Definitely incredible!! I did notice the performance in going form 90C to 100C was significant. Without a doubt, I am impressed by this thing - I also learned that I am not the greatest when it comes to tuning an engine - the Carbsmart is definitely worth it!!

On smaller engines like the Hyper 50 or YS50 you can push it up to 110C (especially when not running 30% nitro) as they tend to get hotter naturally than a 90 sized one. On a evo 50 the setting can be pushed up to 120C without worries as the fan doesn't cool that much. On a 600N I have to keep it around 110C since the fan cools the engine too much so you're able to run out of juice before reaching target temperature if it is set too high

How do you set the direction of the servo if you are using a Y connector for power? I miss-placed my instructions and have to start over. Will somebody please walk me through the set-up again.

Thanks!
