When you switch on the heli the CarbSmart goes to the fully lean position, it only richens up when the head temperature reaches that set.

Isn't there a chance that this will be to lean for a cold engine
and possibly cause a problem, if the carby is opened suddenly.

Usally cold engines need more fuel

I have just purchased a Carb Smart and I am waiting for it to arrive.
This is one of the questions I had about the device

When we say "full lean" - we don't mean the engine is at full lean
We are just at the full lean end of the carb smart's range
The range of adjustment available to the CarbSmart is rather limited
The servo travel is only about 60 degrees - less than 1/4 of a turn

It's important to find a good middle point for the CarbSmart
so it can deviate lean and rich from about the right spot

This means going full lean is less than 1/8 of a turn
(half the full travel from the normal sweet spot)

Cold engines do not need more fuel,
the 1st start of the day can be a bit messy
but that is because she is dry etc
After she's been primed and used the fuel is up to the carb,
there is fuel in the crankcase
she's much more likely to burst into life for flight two

Servo Type

Can I use a standard Servo with the Carb Smart.

I was thinking of using a HS-55 or a EK2-0500 which is a ESKY servo

They are the same size and only 8g

I'm using an HS-81 on mine and it's coping fine but it's rubber mounted which helps against the vibes, the HS-55 and Esky servo's mount direct and are not intended for use where there is vibration, I wouldn't use them.

Just got my Carbsmart installed and ready for test. After all I have heard, I am excited to see how well it really does!

Hi Tony,
According to your review, you did had some faulty sensor. Can you tell me the part no. for the sensor. I need some as spare and I want to find them locally.

From my measurement, it seems to be a 100k thermister. But I can't see any part no. on it.

Thanks
TGO

Ok, I'm going to be killed for this but here it goes...

you can either buy a CSM replacement sensor ref number CSM0051 (cost 4.95£) or, as alternative if you are good at soldering and have a small 8W Iron:

Murata SMD Thermistor number: NCP18WF104J03RB
Resistance: 100K at 25C
B constant 4250

costs like 10 cents per unit (are sold in 10 packs) and you need to solder it between the outer wires of a standart servo lead i.e. black and white wire. Cut the middle red wire off.

As long as you don't apply any kind of pressure on the temp sensor when installing it between the fins, you shouldn't have a problem though.

Tony

PS - I opted to buy some spare CSM packed sensors as soldering a 0.8mm x 1mm thermistor between two wires is honestly a mess.

Tony,
I bought 25 of those thermistors from Mouser.com for $3.50+ shipping.

If you plan on making these yourself you'll need a few extra because you probably won't get it right the first time. I destroyed 4 of them before I got it down (not couting the first one because I dropped it and couldn't find). You'll also need some very fine tweezers.

You're right about the sensor, it's very fragile.

Here's how I've just installed mine.

Simply opened a small hole in the frame and installed a sub micro sero (Futaba S3110).

Nice

I was thinking in opening the frame myself but then I didn't want to have carbon dust all over the engine and such.

Maybe I'll cut a new set of frames with a nano slot instead of the standart servo size for throttle and the right frame with a slot for the other nano servo... would need to make a CAD out of the frames first and I'm low on time (and convince my friend to cut it on his CNC as mine is way too small for that)

Mine doesn't go to fully lean adjusted position
when i switch on it, it goes to the center
why do you have this??

Sorry for the confusion
it didn't go to full lean position because when we came back from the field a friend of mine moved the gain position
all well now

what does this product do? is it just a mixture control like the GV-1 has the option for?

Yes, mixture control, only far superior as it controls mixture based on temperature.

I've got mine installed, and tested in yesterday. I first set the temp at 90, and it stayed lean the whole tank. I reset the needle valvea little lenaer, then ran again. The Carbsmart stayed lean for a few minutes, then after taking it up and doing some full power climbout and stuff and bringing it back down, the carbsmart was at full rich. After hovering for a second or two in normal mode, I saw the needle go back to full lean. More power than I ever anticipated from this engine. Apparently I had my Hyper set too rich, even though I thought not. I have since bumped the temp setting to 100, and even more power. So far, I am very happy with the Carbsmart!

Guys, don't you think that it's time for CSM to proceed in a compact device, which will embody both Revlock and SmartCarb, as well as an onboard auto glow device?
