Computer Flight Simulators > My Impressions of Real Flight G4

I just bought RealFlight G4 and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in it. My complaints don't have anything to do with performance.

The first issue I had are with the layout of the switches. The flight mode switch is backwards. The the normal flight mode is now closest to you (switch forward), the idle up 1 is in the middle, and idle up 2 is furthest away (switch rearward). Why change that in G4? That's almost universal. I don't know if that function can be reversed or not.

The Throttle hold has been moved to the front of the TX case where the rotating wheel for the landing gear/flap knob was at on the older controllers and vice versa. Why move after all these years?

I know I can use my radio, but I'd rather just use the Interlink Controller. I'd use the older one from G3 if that works. I haven't tried that yet.

The second thing is major change to my favorite feature in G2/G3, a feature called the Look at Ground view. I can always see the ground when I use that view. That feature is still there in G4, but works differently. Despite the name, the ground is not always in view in G4.

Maybe it's just a tweak in the software, if it is and someone knows how to change, please let me know.

Maybe it's me, but the helicopters seemed to fly a bit differently. I know out of the box, the trims where way off. I fixed that, but they still felt strange.

One thing does have to do with performance, but it's minor. With the water based flying fields, my PC is not up to it. It uses a somewhat slow Intel Dual 1.8 processor with a rather slow video card. I was getting 18 frames per second; too slow to fly models in that mode. When I flew at a photo field I was getting over 100 FPS.

I'd love to hear other comments on it. I've been using RealFlight since it came out and it's been my sim of choice.

seems to me that Knifeedge and/or GP is just coasting w/ this software.

putting out what really are minor changes (if you want to call them improvements) and then say 'no, sorry, no upgrade is possible, please buy the simulator AGAIN'.

They've had how many years to push the envelope yet Phoenix and Reflex are generally thought to be 'better' depending on whom you ask.

I agree about the switches, you can go into chanel mapping & reverse it though, As for throttle hold & the rotory switch, I looked inside of mine, you could probally change them, but you would have to break some of the tabs that hold them in place & maybe lengthen some wires. I tried the G3 Interlink & it does not work, at least for me.

MS flight sim 2004 for less than $30 has better water features than anything else out there...go figure.

As stated...not worth the upgrade.

Hi RotorheadBob,
Thanks for your first impressions. I have 3.5 and find the heli's are like on rails. Any impressions there? Any new training lessons? Thanks.

can you get a controller for phoenix so you don't have to use your own radio?

No, but you can buy a spare battery for your Tx and use that batt for sim time. Plus you are used to the weight and feel of your Tx each time you fly.

I don't know, I use my own transmitter. To my knowledge, Phoenix does not sell one.

I won't mind to see the improved G4 with wireless controller though. Hangar 9 has one, would there be one for G4 in the future? I really hate that cord.. lets cut the cord..!

Pheonix are working on a controller at the moment. Last time I asked, I was told it was only a few weeks away.

I have lots of rechargeables. When I am on the sim, I like to stand back from the monitor. So recharging now and then would be OK for the freedom gained.
