If you want a serious answer, surely the national modelling organisation of your country should be offering support to teams representing that country at an international level, in which case all of the members are supporting the team via their subscriptions.

Oh, but NO!

Optikaman, et al:
To the best of my knowlege, there are only 2 full time professional R/C heli pilots in the US, Curtis and Wayne. I don't think that qualifies as the top 1%. The other two members of our US team have full time jobs, Dwight in the insurance industry, and Len for Horizon Hobbies. Our former World Champ, Cliff Hiatt works full time as an engineer for Lockheed Martin.
To answer the question : what do you receive out of this?, we could point out that the computer radio you are using was first designed for the competition flyer and all the later itterations were as a result of their needs, the heading hold gyro you fly was designed and used for competition, the big block motors exist currently because FAI changed the allowable motor size to 15cc (.91 cu in.). Maybe all of this stuff would have come about anyway BUT we got it quicker and better because the "pros" got it, worked with it, improved it, helped market it, and support it. I am a sponsored pilot. I do NOT get my stuff free. I pay for nearly everything, at a discount price but not nearly as big a discount as most people think. I try to keep 4 models flying (2 contest models, 1 sport fun fly model, and a model to test new stuff on), drive 10,000 miles a year in direct support of the hobby at my own expense, paying food and lodging out of my pocket. Most of the guys I know fall in the same category, we put in way more than we get out financially but are rewarded by the enjoyment we get in participating with other like minded modelers. I promise it is not for financial gain as the support is just not there.
I choose to compete and support our US team financially but do know others have little or no interest in doing it although I would hope they would support them in spirit. I bet most other heli flyers appreciate the time and effort required to compete at such a high level and have great respect for the people that do,( and I would bet secretly, you do too ) even if they aren't interested in the actual events.
Sorry if this comes off as a rant, my intention is to present a few facts and express my support. for some dedicated guys.

Special situation

I remember that. The situation was that the gyro was commercially brand new and not available to everyone at the time. As it turned out, they were adopted right after the worlds and have been in use since. The development of the HH gyro for most companies was for use in competition, although since that time the 3D guys have made significant inroads into the development market.
After thinking about this for a few minutes, I seem to remember Colin having enough for everyone to get the new CSM HH gyro but I don't remember if they used them or not? The concern was that many teams would not have time to get experienced using them and felt it "might" be an unfiar advantage.

I have minimal interest in F3C contests, but I have made a donation to the USA team. It doesn't cost much, and it's not like they are taking the money to buy lap dances. (but if it improves the scores do it...) It's almost the same as pilots coming to register at a Fun Fly with no intentions of flying, or buying a raffle ticket they know they probably won't win, it's just to support our fellow pilots.

Like it or not, the F3C folks still drive a lot of the developements in our hobby. That's starting to change some now, but they are a big factor.

Plus, when you spend how much each year in the hobby, what the heck is a little bit more!

Support

GM1- Gordie, IF you are employed by or sponsored by a manufacture and receive any financial support or payment by means of lower pricing or payroll and are required to compete then you are in all intent a professional. Curtis, Wayne and Len are professionals.

I will disagree with you in that the major radio manufactures are not designing new radios for FAI competition, they may tweak the programming for there team pilots by their request but the origination of these sets where designed to beat there competition and sell to the vast R/C market. Like I said in my previous post that it is the manufacturers that gain from there team members winning, it is great for advertising to show that they have a winning product. How many guys have purchased the 9WC or the10S and will never use 50 % of its features?

We all at time have fallen victim to there advertising ploy and have purchased there new top of the line gear when we could have sufficed comfortably with the lower model. If I am not mistaken it was Curtis that brought us some advancement in gyro technology for JR and the piezo element which has been around for over a decade was that natural choice for the next gyro advancement. Gordie you are right when you said (BUT we got it quicker and better because the "pros" got it, worked with it, improved it, helped market it, and support it.) You are right, we all gain from there input into new products. I was just pissed off when VOLKUL made the comment (If you can't spare a measly $10 then you need to get out of the hobby)

optikaman,

Dude I really didn't mean to get ya pissed, perhaps if we ever get a chance to sit down over a soda/beer/drink we could discuss our differences on the subject. I am just trying to get people to donate in my own harsh way

Great job DavidH - It only concludes that no matter what R/C Team
is competing for USA, the only organization we need to offer support
for is the AMA which is the BACKBONE of the R/C industry in this country!

Secret Squirrel you are right the pilots here in the US get a pretty good deal and they still complain it is not enough. I can remember all the times I raced something and the only money I got was from sponsors. With-out the sponsors it is hard to do it.

So if you go back to some of these posts you can see way some of these pilots get maid about someone trying to force them in to giving when they do not benefit from it. The sponsors do have all to gain. If they did not they would not donate or sponsor pilots to fly for them.
