Vario Sky Fox - Benzin - Evolution - Xtreme > Arrow shaft for a torque tube?? Questions on the Benzin

Got my benzin this weekend and uppon inspection we noticed the tail rotor was really springgy. I took it apart and the arrow shaft that was in there was split in a few places. Is it ok to use arrow shafts of the same size as a normal torque tube??

One thing I'm noticing is there is not as much throw in the tail rotor to the left than the right. If i need more left rotor, there is not much left before it stops. I looked at all the scematics and everything is put together right, but it seems like the arms should be shorter??
Now granted I have yet to fly thing and I'm a littel ways from it but I'm just getting started!!

Mike, sorry to hear you have a damaged torque tube.. As far as the arrow shaft.. I have some arrow shafts myself.. but i think the diameter is a bit too big. If you can find one that is 6.2mm diameter that would be just right.. else you might have to use the torque tube from vario.

Due to the direction the main rotor blades rotates (Left hand rotation) , tail will tends to swing to the left when you loses the tail, hence you have to get as much throw as you can to keep the tail straight ie: more left rudder. Good luck.. keep us posted on your progress

That must have already have been changed since the benzin kits come stock with a stainless steel torque tube.

Torque tube in my benzin is carbon. needed only one bearing in the center to support it. sure makes it easier to change if needed.

Hmm, thats wrong also. It should be stainless with three bearings supporting the torque tube. Don't know what you have there.

Mine is actually not a stretch boom but a regular length boom, running a 431 blades. Carbon torque tube with claw couplings on both ends, one bearing support in the middle of the boom.

The stock version with the regular tail boom comes with stainless, and three bearings in the boom for support. Look at the 02 catalog exploded view.

Carbon is just as good if not better. The positive about carbon is that it will not fail under fatigue or what is called cyclic loading.(which can come from misalignment.) the downfall is that it can break easy on a tail rotor strike.

the stainless can fail from fatigue but is stronger in the case of a tail rotor touching ground.

So the question is "Fail in the AIR or fail on the Ground ?

After flying the same benzin for 6 years, fatigue from the stainless is not an issue.

I would suspect that maybe we are talking about a pre-built Benzin from VARIO USA with the air star CCPM sideframes. Sometimes when the stock SS shafts are not available, they upgrade to the CF shaft for free. As far as the arrow shafts go, they work great but are hard to find in 6.2mm. Usually you will have to buy in bulk and special order the right size. If you get lucky your local sporting goods store will have a dealer catalog you can look thru. Also, got to agree with Joe, fatigue from the stainless is not an issue.

OK, here is a question.....

So, I have a benzine powered Dauphin (finestron) and my torque tube is 5.99 MM and I only have 2 bearings in the pipe. Will this be a problem further down the road??

After reading about the arrow shaft thing a few months back I went to a couple of our local hunting/camping supply stores. One of the stores had a little bit of this and a little bit of that. The other I went to, well it was the mother of supermarkets for that kind of stuff. Arrows made of fiberglass, carbon fiber, aluminum, stainless steel, exotic composite blends of practically every colour, diameter and length you could dream of. Plus they also have quite an exotic assortment of blanks (no feathers or heads on yet) for the hunter that want's to build custom arrows or have them built to their specifications. Very interesting.

I lost my infamous tag line.

You didn't happen to.......

have a set of digital calipers with you......OR score a catalogue with dimensionals......

Two bearings in the tube should be fine.
