e-Ark X-400 - MX400 > Please Help.. ESC MOTOR HEAT!!!

I need your help....

This is my setup....

MX 400 Pro.... CCPM upgrade.... Align Tailboom..... Diablo tail rotor assembly.... Align 315 blades.... stock 2750kv helimax motor.... stock helimax ESC.... stock pinion.... TP 2100 15C continuous/20C Max LIpo..... reciever ferrite ring.

Gear mesh is PERFECT.... Belt tension is PERFECT..... Headspeed is at 80% with +5 deg. of collective at hover. Everything is fluid smooth...

Here is my problem...

I get about 5 minates of hover before the ESC SHUTS OFF due to heat.... Motor is warm, but not overly hot. I have the ESC mounted at the rear of the heli at an angle to get as much cooling as possible and as far as possible from the front mounted receiver.

I can't understand why I am getting so much heat from the ESC.... is the motor just not upto the 450 tailboom and blades and causing undu stress on the ESC due to the extra rotation weight???? Is the 15C battery not up to par??? Or is the motor / ESC combo just crappppp???

any help would be appreciated....

Overheating

Sounds like you have the problem already pinned down. With no binding issues and the motor not overheating it's gotta be the speed ctrl issue.

Try this first if you haven't already. Set the timing to low,the speed ctrl and motor won't have to work as hard at the cost of lower head speed.

If the low timing doesn't help Turn off overload proctection in your speed ctrl. Some of the by the book folks will cringe at turning off the overload protection but my thinking is I don't want my heli going down because of senstive overload protection. If turning off the overload fixs the problem you should land the heli and buy a better speed ctrl.

Ok.... I didn't even know that you could set timing on the Heli Max 25 Amp ESC... HOW IS THAT DONE??

And How do you turn off overload protection......

Try it without the motor running at all. Wiggle the cyclic controls for a minute and see how hot the ESC feels just from the BEC. If it's really hot from that, you may have binding in the head linkages or you may have too powerful servos for the BEC built into the ESC.

How it's done

Forgive me I ment to state in my post that I don't own a HeliMax speed ctrl.Mine is a CC35. There should be a way to program it though. Some of you guys that run the helimax stock speed ctrl can help.
Again sorry for the misunderstanding.

this is part of your problem...this is not actual head speed.

what is your pinion size?

you have a great ESC...your other problem...so

use the following "options" in programming order

1 auto lipo
4 insensitive current limiting
5 brake disabled (its in brake mode from factory)
3 low governor...adjust Tx throtle curve to all 0-100-100-100-100
2 standard timing
2 soft cutoff
2 soft start
1 13khz...this can brought up to option 2...keep tabs on motor temp.

Stock pinion....

wow man... that is all greek to me.... the helimax esc came with instructions and said nothing about a programming mode.....

HELP!!!!

Just got off the phone with the support center.... seems like my ESC is not programable... and in their words.... (NOT VERY GOOD)...

Looks like I need a new Motor and ESC..... Any suggestions?????

Not looking to spend a who lot of money.... I saw a dragon programable 30A ESC and 3500KV Outrunner on Ebay for $55.00 ... any thoughts???

You don't need a motor or esc (granted the esc is pretty cheap).
Drop back to an 11 tooth pinion. I'm using the stock motor, and
an Eflite Pro 25 ESC taching 2550 at 100 percent throttle, 11.5
deg. pitch with an 11 tooth and stock blades(12.6V on a fresh
pack). You won't draw as much current(heat). If it still gives
problems with the bigger blades just buy a decent ESC. I'm not getting an unusual amount of heat but I'm also free flying which
doesn't put as much strain on the motor as hovering.

Well, I just ordered the Sonix 30A ESC w/ switchable BEC.... I don't like flying with a weak link... and that HeliMax ESC has got to go...

May be I'll get a park flyer and put it to use...

motor shutdown !!

Motor Cutoff

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was doing loop sucessfully and then followed by Fig 8 when suddenly the motor died on me.

I could not simulate the problem and everything was working fine after the crash.
The only thing that can casue my motor shutdown will be either the motor died on me (still alive and kicking). I have experimented with unplugging my ESC from the Receiver while the motor is spinning and then WAH LAR...the motor came to a stop. So not I know its my ESC that resulted in the cutoff to my motor, BUT what causes the cutoff???

My ESC is Quark 33 and I am using Align 430L.
It tends to heat up quite a fair bit, including my ESC.
I am using only 13T and running at 85% throttle.

Is there any other thing to setup in my Quark ESC?...It dun seems to have low current setup etc...

I have changed my motor hopefully it would make a better couple with my ESC

The 430L draws alot of juice you should go down to a 11t pinion that will help you out.

MX400 heat up

I also have the same problem with the heat build up. I am running the recommended heli-max motor with a CC35. Between 5 to 6 minutes run time. Mine does not shut down but get really hot. Going to a smaller pinion gear does help but then it will barely lifts off the ground. Now looking at a different motor.
