Can purchase from cyberheli

You can get one immediately from cyberheli.com for about $1750. Shipping will probably be another $100 so you are looking at $1850. If you do end up getting one. I would recommend upgrading to a YS .80 or an OS .91.

I have an OS .91 in my regular Freya and a YS .80 in my Freya Ex. The OS .91 has more power even if you burn 15% fuel but is much harder to crank. However, you can have a finner needle valve setting with the YS since it has 3 needles and you don't need to get a header tank since it is constantly pressurized. I have only hovered these two machines since the engines are still new.

Additionally, I would say that the regular Freya is more suited for 3D (Quicker cyclic) since it uses the SZ II rotorhead which has the paddles below the main blades, while the Freya EX is more suited for F3C flying since it used the SSR V rotorhead and tracks straighter in Fast forward flight since it has the paddles above the main blades.

Alternatively you may want to wait till next year when Hirobo might release a new rotor head. The SSR VI which Hashimoto used for this past world championships. For pictures you can go to www.jason.net.

Freya EX cost

I didn't see a location for you so I don't know where you are in the world. If your here in the states, I would suggest you have your local hobby shop quote you a price from Hirobo Altech, they are the US importers and give great service and have all the parts. If you don't have a shop, then check with the online companies. If you have any questions about the Freya or Freya EX, please feel free to email me at richardf@san.rr.com and I'll be happy to answer them.

At that price the $1400 Bergen 3D doesn't seem so bad.

New Currency

It's funny how your perspective can change on things. I have a tendency to value things now in standard Freya units, this is apporximately $650 bucks. So the Bergen is 2 units, the Freya EX is 3 units and so on. At the rate I'm going, I will burn close to 4 units of fuel in a year, shrug, so how much was a gasser?

Freya EX price? Too much

Yes Hirobo does tend to make you pay through the nose. But I agree that Hirobo is one of the few companies that actually have a stable of flyers all over the world that contribute to what the final kits will look like since they test fly all their models diligently finding problems and solve them before they release it.

I tried the Freya EX, it flies 99% similar to the Eagle 2 98 EX series since the rotorhead is the same. So unless you're really a collector, if you want to have the experience of flying a Freya EX, you might want to scout around for used Eagle 2 98s in good condition. They shouldn't cost more than $1000 w/ engine and blades only. If you are lucky you can find one already upgraded with the blue SSR-V rotorhead which has longer blade grips.

I feel if I bought a new Eagle, the pucker factor would be too high. However, bought used, I might not be so afraid to risk trying learning on it as well as my standard Freya. Plus, if you do crash it, alot of parts on the Freya will fit on the Eagle 2.

Two things affect the price from what I know.

1. All CF that is used in Hirobo kits has its origin in the USA.
I dont know if the raw sheets are sent over or if finished product
is but either way, it starts in the US, then goes to Japan and back
to the US. That adds time and money.

2. For whatever 'reason', the price of metal Eagle parts in the US is
quite high (usually about 40-50% higher than in the Far East). But,
as other vendors have demonstrated, that is not an isolated case
considering the Fut 401/9253 is $200 overseas vs. $300 here.

Lot's of carbon

It was exciting to open the box on the Freya EX the first time, all the Carbon and Blue anodized aluminum parts. The head comes pre-assembled in it's own box and is simply amazing in it's manufactoring precision and beauty. At this point you don't care how good it will fly, it's only a sculptured piece of aluminum. I had used my standard Freya model copied to the EX and zeroe'd out the trims, I haven't touched a rod on it since I built it, perfect hover. It is a pricey heli, but it a good solid flyer, still holding at 42 flights while I decide on which motor it gets, a YS-80 or OS-91.

Engine Choice

Richard,

I have finally put together the OS91 in a regula Freya with Hatori muffler (part number 980) 12T pinion and 93T main gear, and a set of MS 680 3D blades.

I only burned 4 tanks of 15% fuel through it so far and boy I'm so amazed at the power. My needles are still set on the rich side (1 1/2 tunrs out) but when I punch the sticks, the heli does not hesitate at all.

As for the YS80. I put it in my Freya EX. I'm running the 12T pinion, 95T main gear, High volume Hatori muffler (part number 981), and 680 glass blades that comes with the kit.

Agiain I have only burned about 4 tanks of 30% fuel. It has more than enough power to put the EX through any kind of manuver, however compared to the OS 91 it does not have as much power.

Richard, both are great engines with the combination that I described above.

The pluses for the YS80 is that it is pressurized so you will get a very consistent run even if you decide to do crazy tumbles. Additionally you will get a very fine needle setting since it maintains the three needles that is seen on the YS 61 ST II. The drawbacks however is the cost in fuel to fly this engine since it does not like 15% at all.

As for the OS90 it has tremendous POWER and you will save a bunch on fuel costs since it runs just fine on 15% (I can't even imagine what kind of power you will get if you put 30% fuel in it). The engine runs very smooth, however it is not pressurized so you may want to get a header tank. As for the drawbacks, the engine is very hard to crank (I had to purchase a Sullivan Dynatron starter and use 24 Volts to crank this thing) and that OS has gone back to the 2 needle carb to save costs.

Hope that helps.

If you still can't decide, buy another EX and put an OS 91 in one and a YS 80 in another!!!!

Next Engine (survey says!)

Stanley,

I had a nice talk with several people this morning who have flown both the YS-80 and the OS-91 in a
Freya, everyone agrees the 91 makes more power. I won't ever have two EX's, ha-ha, but you are close with an EX and a WC. I'm 90% sure I'll go with the OS and get a header tank and take full advantage of the 15% fuel, that will save me a 100 bucks a month just in fuel! I have some V-Blades coming for the EX, should be about 205 grams, will let you know how they work in comparison to the 1999 Hirobo FAI contest blades.
