It is possible that the aluminum boom did shrink a little in the cold and cause the clamping action to be reduced, and the plastic grip has a little less grip in the cold.
The piro rate on this heli is well beyond anything that anyone here has ever seen before. We are estamating somewhere around 8-10/sec.
The heli is spinning so fast that nobody at the field could even try to count the piros because you cannot see the heli, it is a blur. The centrifugal forces trying to pull the tail off have got to be huge.
The Xcell instructions do tell you to pin the tail gear case to the boom to prevent it from pulling out but say nothing about the front of the tail boom. If I can ever do anything to prevent a problem from reoccurring, especially something as simple as drilling a tiny hole and putting in a screw, it’s a no-brainer. |
