Last weekend I was flying my X-cell gasser and while attempting a 7,380° stall turn I thought that I had lost all radio function, but could not understand why the engine did not come to idle as is programmed in my failsafe setup.

Well the post mortem and mental replays revealed that I had not actually lost radio contact with the heli but the centrifugal force of the piro had pulled the tail boom about an inch out of the mechanics and I did not realize that the apparent out of control situation was merely a loss of tail rotor witch might have been savable with an auto.

While thinking this all thru later that day I realized that I had never programmed the gov. to turn off in failsafe. I have also pinned all of my tail booms to prevent any possibility of movement in the air during radical piros.

I believe that there was some seismic activity reported in the area when the gasser hit.
It was not pretty. Frozen ground is as hard as concrete.

We can fix it

During the post mortem I did check that all of the bolts were still tight.
It is possible that the aluminum boom did shrink a little in the cold and cause the clamping action to be reduced, and the plastic grip has a little less grip in the cold.
The piro rate on this heli is well beyond anything that anyone here has ever seen before. We are estamating somewhere around 8-10/sec.
The heli is spinning so fast that nobody at the field could even try to count the piros because you cannot see the heli, it is a blur. The centrifugal forces trying to pull the tail off have got to be huge.
The Xcell instructions do tell you to pin the tail gear case to the boom to prevent it from pulling out but say nothing about the front of the tail boom. If I can ever do anything to prevent a problem from reoccurring, especially something as simple as drilling a tiny hole and putting in a screw, it’s a no-brainer.
