Got Jet Fuel? Turbine Helicopters > Head tach for >1000 RPM

Okay, I tried hijacking the govenor thread below and that didn't work so I decided I should open a new post with my XLV tach question

What is a popular way of taching the rotor head of an XLV or any other heli that has a head speed below 1000 RPM?

I have seen a Vario RPM indicator (P/N 3555) that shows a light when you have exceeded a certain head speed. Interesting gadget but knowing you are or just about to exceed a certain speed is not the same as knowing the actual rotor RPM.

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

i assume you are using a wren for the XLV ?

If so send a PM to Chopper Jockey as he set up his wren XLV after some playing around with throttle curves.

He tended to go by sound of the engine as he put load on,

I agree with you on the light subject, i would prefer to be well under the maximum head speed rather than on the edge.

The New MA Skytach will do very low rpms, down in the 600's I think. Look for the one with the red label. The old one was blue.

There is a very easy answer to your question:

Use an optical tach and for 2 blades (like the XLV) get someone to take a reading when there is 4 stationary blades (not 2) then divide the reading by 2.

For example: for a head speed of 850rpm the tacho should read 1700 with 4 stationary blades in the view finder.

I do this all the time on my large models

Hope this helps.

Thank you all - some very useful information especially the 4 blade idea! Never thought of that but of course it makes pefect sense

Dave, something is puzzling me here, I understand the concept, but with a 2 blade head and you set the tacho, as you suggest in your example to 1700rpm on the tacho and the head is rotating at 850rpm, will you still not see 2 blades throught the shutter? as one blade has done 180deg rotation instead of 360deg?, so it still looks like 2 blades?

Or in standard use is the tacho shutter opening twice every revolution?, so you would see four blades, as you say, if taco set to twice the speed setting.

Suppose that's my question, is the Skytach shutter frequency matched to the head rpm? or is it twice head rpm?

In normal use I think the slot in the tacho disk (I use the MA tach) will be running twice as fast as the viewed rotor disk.

So in the slow speed setup you will be getting a snap shot at every 90 degrees of the rotor. Therefore a stationary viewed disk will show 4 blades.

It does work

oh,

Does that not mean, for a 3 blade head, in normal use the stationary head will show 6 blades?

Is the MA tach used more generally for 2 blade heads in that case?

Yep, you would see 6 blades

My MA tach is a few years old and I would think it was designed with 2 bladed helis in mind.

My latest project has a 6 blade head at about 850rpm now what will 12 stopped blades look like
