I'm really curious about the technique behind producing such windshields as in the attached pic?
How is it done? Transparent, decals, stickers…etc!?

Pretty simple really..

Basecoat color...mask out design...spray top coat color and fading etc...then peel off mask...

when you peel off the mask you areleft with a design or wording etc underneath...

Dave...

Pretty Simple is in reference to "how it's done"

Execution is another story....I myself would not even attempt it...I know what the outcome would look like..

Your work is exceptional...

that's why I pay the "pros" such as yourself to paint my canopies...

Ok, here's deal.(assume we are using purple)

1. HOC Orion Silver base coat

2. Reduce the Purple, and spray it on the silver so that the silver is now tinted slightly purple. (Candy works best, but must be mixed perfectly for adhesion, so stick with a base color till you get the hang of it)

3. Put the mask down, for best results, use low tac Gerber mask.

4. Apply more base color, mixed 2:1, let dry and remove mask.

5. Fade some black, reduced down(and with a Little SG100 if you want in supper smooth) around the canopy edge

6. Clear-Sand-Clear, and wa-La, Your done

Thanks a million Dave for sharing!! Neat man!

You can't imagine how this thing was so bugging me whenever I browse galleries and my eye catches on one of those smoking windshields some of which are certainly your handwork

Now I know

It is fun for Dave to "show us what is in his bag of tricks", but he is still safe on doing so as 99% of us can't pull it off. There was about 15 things that could go wrong in the process of doing that. Realize this is one very small portion of the overall paint job. When you stop and think about it, this is EXACTLY why Dave charges and deserves what he gets for a paint job.

Mask, how, where to get them????

Hi all,
I'm too trying to give it a go at painting my canopies, and I'd like to know how/where do you make your masks.
It is something that you need to have made with some sort of laser cutter at a specific shop? (it looks that way to me)
If so, I don't think I can get those made here.
Anyway, any info is appreciated.
Thanks,
Fernando

You need a Roland Stika. It is a 15 inch plotter. you will need Corral Draw software as well. The hole set up will cost about $1300 US. It cuts the vinyl with a very small blade, but looks like a printer.

Then you get to figure it out Corral.

Most sign shops like Fast Signs will cut stuff for you, however, the going rate in San Diego $48/hr, minimum of one hour. So, to get few logos pulled off the net, and cleaned up to cut will set you back $100 or so. Then it is $48 every time you go back.

I used to use a guy who would charge by the foot and I would get a bunch of logos cut at once. Then I gave in and purchased my own plotter.

I am not a computer guy. So it took me forever to figure out how to use the thing. Sooth now, but there is definitely a learning curve.

Cheers, Dave
