How did I come up with this number?.......Well, I knew folks would be concern about the low oil content, so I desided that I would see how much I could run, and still maintain good needle settings....With the newer engines, it was easy...They allow more air for better atomization, and better combustion...So I guess to answer your question, Trial & error...
On the Old puh types with the old carb, I found that 85:1 was better for the old carb...With the new carb, it allowed more oil, to make the engine run good..It would still run even better with 85:1, but that wasn't my intentions...
The older G2D was the same way...It wanted nothing but 85:1..I had run it up to 100:1, but its hard to measure 1.28 ounces. 1.5 is much easier. there is not much difference...I run the new carb now on the old G2D, and run 2 ounces with the camper fuel...
On breakin, I personally breakin on the amount I'm going to run, but some folks want more...Its really not nessasary to run more so long as you keep the needles rich...
If you want to run 50:1 for the first half gallon, thats fine, but after that, cut it back....This is a very good oil, and it will take a little longer to breakin using it, but you will have a finer finish on the cylinder wall when your done...
I first let the engine idle for at least 8 ounces of fuel..Then on the next tank, I adjust the curves to allow hover rpm without putting load on the engine...I'll move the stick changing from hover rpm to idle ever so often...Whats important here is to keep the temp changing, not constant..I'll do this for the whole tank....Then with the next tank, I will bring it up to hover long enough to make sure everthing is reasonably smooth, and do slow forward flight, while not hovering for long periods. Better yet, I'll do nothing but autos..Around the 3 or 4 gallons, I start doing light aerobatics, and letting the engine run wide open for longer periods , if its not a scale ship, hehee.. Pretty well after that, you can do what you want..The ring will seat between 6 to 9 gallons
These engines are tuff as nails. I have let her rip tatorchip after two gallons, but I tend to baby them for the most part
One more thing, when you are trying to smooth out the machine, and you have placed the needles correctly, sometimes you need to change the load, and rpms to find a sweetspot...Shouldn't take much...This is the reason I put minimum 5 degs to make sure the load is there in most applications...Running the big 800 mm blades, according to the rpm your running, have enough profile drag on the blades to make it easier to adjust...
Dave, if your running the stock setup, remember to not over speed the rotor...Get a Gov, or limit your high throttle setting...
