I will be trying a pair of these on my IonX in 14S configuration. It currently runs on 10S lipos.

http://bigerc.com/product_info.php?products_id=75

If you become a member, it's a bit cheaper. They are cheaper if you buy DeWalt packs but these have Deans plugs and balancing taps. I hear that my flight times will be around 4-5 minutes but they also charge in 15 minutes so in 30 minutes, both packs will be ready to rock and roll. They are 60% cheaper than a Lipo alternative which gives you 1 or 2 more minutes of flight time. I am limited to these flat packs because of the restrictions posed by the IonX. If you have another heli, then you might have more configuration options.

$14 is a good price if you're good at soldering. I'm not one of those guys and with an IonX on the line, I'll pay the extra $$ to have quality soldering and good connectors.

I got my A123 7s pack and will most likely never buy another lipo again!!!!
it looks like I will have around $70 in a 7s pack, i can charge in 15 min, flight time is about 20 seconds longer then with my evo 2500 packs. performance is very close to the evo's, the evo's have more kick for the first 30 seconds but then settle down the A123's are very consistant

Concept,

That's good to hear your results. I should be receiving my 7s packs very soon. I just have to adjust my CC85HV LVC to 28V (2v per cell).

at first i was dissapointed, But over all it's a good combo.
on first spool up i noticed head speed was lower then expected, i did have to add 3 clicks of trim do to the extra 100g in the nose. my first climbouts were a little slower then with the evo 2500 packs, but over my 4.5 minute flight performance was solid and very consistant. then I flew with the evo 2500 packs and sure enough head speed was up their and climbouts were faster, But 30 seconds or maybe a minute into the flight that peak power drops off and now it flies just like the A123 pack does thru the whole flight.
So with a std Lipo pack you have that extra grunt at first but it drops off thru the flight. the A123 is consistant thru the whole flight. the evo's do fly better but at 2x the cost and 3x the charge time over the a123's it is hard not to like the a123's. I will probalby change my gearing to up the head speed which will probalby loose my 20-30 seconds of flight time that I gained with the 123's but will give my pop back.

concept1,
What do you use to charge them. I have a Duratrac Ice charger which will charge nicad, NmH and lipos, but not sure on the A123's. My 550ep is almost ready and the 123's sound like the way to go.

well, I am going the lab variable power supply route, I am using poer supply that I can adjust the volts to 25.2 and amps up to 10a, for now i will charge ranging from 4-6amps, when the v gets to 25.2 the amps drop to 0 and your done.

Hopefully, I will have addressed the drop in headspeed by going up in voltage. I originally used a 10s lipo but I will be going with 14s A123

A123 set ups

Hi guys, I recently did a review on a A123 set up made by a firm here in Bulgaria where I live.
They have a fantastic, and newly patented parrallel charging system and mounting printed circuit boards for the cells as well as instructions for putting different size packs together.
You can go to www.cpilot.eu and take a look around there.

I did the test in a Vigor electric conversion they also make all the mechanical parts for and it flies really well, and in all honesty for some 80% of flyers out there who are learning / practising, and want lots of flights close together without spending a fortune on keeping up to the latest 'C' Rating or trying to get the lightest packs, these are great.
10 min charge, hard flight 5 mins, std with some moves and flips nearer to 8 or 10, for scale guys ...pick a number.
They're safe and easy to use especially with the set up from rcpilot...

Hey its worth a look for those interested in A123 cells..

A123

Best thing since sliced bread. I am currently running 6s2p in a converted shuttle, and 8s2p or 16s in my "Trex 600" with a "CC HV85" and a "Neu" motor. I use "Hyperion 1201i" chargers that charge at 10 amps to 95% in about 10 to 14 minutes. Bought Dewalt 36 volt li-ion batteries(ebay), dissasembled them and put the cells into "MEC" powertubes. Awesome, and at only about $10.00 per cell. I also get great flight times with this set up. No more $300.00 batteries for me. Another added bonus is, because they won't burn I charge them in the Heli.

I just received my pair of 7S A123's from Big E-RC($126 each) for my soon-to-be 14S IonX. I know they're cheaper if I buy Dewalt packs and tear them down/assemble them myself but I'm pretty lousy at soldering and these came with Deans plugs AND TP balance tabs and nicely shrunk wrapped. It looks like a quality build and very clean so I hope they fly as good as they look. They are significantly lighter than the 10s 4900 Neu Lipo packs on there now. Flight times are estimated to be 4:30ish but at least I hear that they ROCK the whole time. This combined with their lighter weight, should make for an interesting 4 1/2 minutes of flight.
Now to lower my Idle-Up 1 to 80%-85% (for 14S A123) and Idle-Up 2 to 95%-100% (for 10S lipos). If this works out, I can use both packs interchangeably and not have to regear. Who knows, if they really rock and charge quickly, I may regear and abandon the lipos all together to make for worry-free flying and charging.

I just better time my flights adequately because I hear they dump rather quickly when they dump. ( I better work on my autos!)

Soldering? What Soldering?

I use the "Solderless Powertubes by: MEC" (Model Electronics Corp). Have a look see at www.modelelectronicscorp.com these are great and you can configure them any way you want, and no soldering. They come with pre-soldered sermos conectors. You can build 2 to 14 cell packs of 6.6v to 46.2v. Be sure to use their silver conductive paste between the cells. I have had absolutely no problems from these cells at all. Their email is mecpete@aol.com and their phone is (425)255-4269. They are located in Renton, Washington. Give them a try. you won't look back, I certainly won't!!

Richard,

I considered those solderless tubes but I need 7 cells side by side on either side of my IonX in order to balance out. I just hovered my IonX with the flat 7S packs from BigE-RC but I had to change my throttle curve considerably in order to keep the head speed from ripping off the blades. In short, it's drastically lower than with my lipos but the heli is much lighter now. I have a chipped tail blade so I had some vibration issues. I will test again as soon as I can get some replacement tail blades.
