Bergen R/C Helicopters > Fixing the Bergen EB Tail

I have been having issues with the bergen tail. Those really small 3mm bolts just were not cutting it. The first problem I had was that they would back out. I thought I cured this by using the green locktite. However again the bolt backed out and this time was stripped. There simply is not enough meat holding the EB tail in. I opted to drill it out and put a 4mm bolt in instead. Here are some pics and explanation of what I did to solve this anoying problem if anyone else needs a fix.

As you can see these little buggers are the only thing holding on your EB tail.

The new 4mm x 10 thats going to replace the 3mm bolts.

The first thing I did was disassemble the tail. The tail drive section that connects the torque tube to the gear consists of two bearings, a spacer, and shaft. The EB Tail also does not have enough meat on it for the 3mm to hold the tail boom to the EB tail frame. The 3mm bolts would push up against the spacer also cause problems like stripped bolts.

I drilled a hole using a #30 drill and tapped it with a 4mm x 70 tap.

Next I drilled and tapped the EB case. Use a little oil when using the tap, it makes things go smoother.

Another view of the EB Tail frame.

Now put everything back together, make sure the 4mm x 10 screws align up with the inner spacer and the EB frame. Now put the shaft, spacer and two bearings together for a test fit. Now slide the whole assembly into your tail boom without the torque tube, and tighten down on the tail. Verify that the gears move freely and they are not hitting the screws inside the spacer assembly. Take everything apart and apply locktite and reassemble.

With new 4mm bolts in tail.

The tail is not going anywhere now!!

Fully assembled, make sure the tail is free moving and that the screws are not rubbing. If they are, you will have to cut down the 4mm bolts so they clear the inside shaft.

Good idea and good fix, however, how are you going to adjust the tail gear mesh if the need ever rises?

We also can helicoil those holes, or as you did open them up to 4mm, but we use shorter bolts to clear the inner spacer tube, allowing you to adjust the tail gear mesh if needed.

These bolts do not require much torque to hold, at least initially, however we have also noted that if there is an out of balance condition of the tail rotor system, one bolt (the right side) will loosen, while the opposite bolt will tighten, until the head pops off. (consider the direction of rotation of the tail rotor system)

Drill a new spacer, or turn down the current spacer and add shims. It just seems a lot more beefier now.

Funny you mention that, because that's exactly what happened on the Observer EB you guys built for us.

I used 3M bolts, but slightly longer (1.5 threads more) and RED LocTite. I also put flatwashers under the bolts, where there weren't any before.

We were discussing yours when we determined that's what might be happening. Checking back with some previous occurences confirmed that was what was found to be the culprit, once corrected, it ceased to be a problem.
