Is anyone using geared starters, now that 80 and 90 size engines are plentiful? I have only seen 2 available, one is made by Kavan which is a planetary gear reduction and the other is something from Hobbies and Helis. Seems like they might help starting bigger engines or those with high compression.

I have a geared starter that I got from Irwin at IRCHA a couple years ago. It is quite small in size but will like to rip your hand off at the wrist if the engine floods. It starts my 61's with ease. I'm sure it will easily turn the larger engines also. I've been using it trouble free for a couple years and I think it was only about $30.

The little Kavan is a dandy, but it's claim to fame is not that it is stronger than the non-gear starters like the Sulivan, but that it is almost as strong while being half their size. I've had one for eight or nine years and use it quite a bit. It's noisy and blows fuses regularly unless you put in a thirty amp fuse, and it's harder to hold if you have a slightly flooded engine, but it has started forty and sixty airplane engines over and over since I've had it and it is still going strong. Right now it's used mostly to start my Raptor. In a fight against a flooded sixty, the Sulivan is still stronger, and the Kavan couldn't hold a candle for a Dynatron, but it has been well worth what I paid for it.

The Kavan gear starter will not survive the 80 and 90 engines. I broke two trying to start my OS91. The internal gears actually distorted and stripped and the smoke escaped from the motor. This was with 12 Nicads as power. Currently I use a Hobbico180 with 14 high current Nicads (70amps discharge) and I still have to loosen the glow plug for the first start.

Thanks for the feedback, I was also curious if these starters had "standard" shafts and left hand threads so you could put a Pegae or other starter shfts on them?

The Kavan has a bigger cup than regular starters and there is no start shaft or nut on the inside. It uses a straight slot screw to bolt to the motor shaft. The reduction gears are actually inside the bottom of hte starter cup.

The one I got from HHI has a standard shaft. I had a Pegae on it but currently it has a hex adaptor.
It has the same thread as the Hobbico starters.

geared starter

A cordless drill has lots of nice gears, and a torque limiter if required.

And will probably be cheaper than a large starter/battery combo.
And it's cordless
And it's easier to hold,
And its got lots and lots and lots of torque
Cheaper than a normal starter
Did I mention cordless?
Lighter flight box,
NO broken connections,
Variable speed,
Not as vicious as some large starters,
Cordless

Why doesn't everyone use them?

Get a Dynatron. Its a 12/24v starter. On 12 volts it will start darn near anything I own (including a OS91) and on 24 volts it spins over my ST3250 (2 ci) like it was a .40, It could start a VW bug engine if you were in a pinch.
It's a little expensive ($70) but worth every penny.
