i have been doing alot of research for my upcoming winter project and i just want to double check a few things and maybe get a heads up if i am heading into trouble.

i am planning on building an electric Airwolf 50. the mechanics will be the Hawk Pro with the CCPM conversion kit (so i can have room up front for a scale cockpit). i will be using a Neu motor and will fabricate the motor mount, batteries will be two Tanic 4S2P 4900's run in series to give 8S2P. i am still a little unsure about the pinnion gear to use but something in the 20-24 tooth range seem popular.

my research tells me that the mechanics and the tailboom should all fit well without alot of cutting and hacking

also, the CCPM conversion will fit in the fuse and give me the room i need up front.

if there is a MAJOR oversight on my behalf, please chime in as i would hate to have to return something because it was bought in error.

8S Packs don't fly a 50 size heli w/600mm blades that doesn't weigh very much, that well. So a scale ship that has some weight to it probably would need at least 10S. I have a MD530 with a converted Raptor 50 and fly it on 10S2P A123 packs, the duration is around 7 to 8 minutes. The AirThunder packs are much better packs than the Tanic packs and are probably not any more expensive. As far as a pinion, it depends on the main gear, the motor and the packs you are going to use. You probably want to run a HS of around 1700, so you need to determine what packs to use and calculate which motor and pinion you need to use to get the HS you want.

thanks for the reply. so you are saying that with 8S the helicopter isn't going to be heavy enough and won't fly scale like ?? am i understanding your comment correctly ? you suggest 10S to give more weight and thereby a more scale like flight.

interesting, i didn't think of it that way. anyone else with suggestions ? that's why i want to check before i buy

No that isn't what I meant. I said that a 600mm heli wont' fly that well on 8S, that its going to take 10S to fly a 50 size heli. If you take a 50S heli mechanics and out them in a scale ship, it will certainly have to have 10S because the scale ship will weigh more.

That's not entirely true about 8S. I fly my Rap90 with MD500 fuse on 8S with a 32-3 geared 95/8 or almost 12:1. The headspeed is 1350 or so. While not powerful it flys very well and scale like. I think with the right motor and gearing a 50 would do well on 8S. Trex600 fly on 6S and while the amp draw is high, they fly well on it.

The Trex 600 w/6S does fly nice if you like a bogging motor. In my opinion, Align did this for one reason and one reason only and that was they knew they could sell a butt load of these helis if someone had only to buy one battery pack. I've heard a lot of guys say they would fly an electric if they didn't have to buy two expensive packs. It does fly nice on 6S but flies much better on 10S.

Every T600 I saw fly has more power than a Rappy, possibly even more than my E-rap on 11S. Mainly its because they are lighter. The T600s I saw were flyin on the new TP5000s and there was very little if any bogging. It all depends on if he wants it to fly scale or like a 3D machine(more power is never bad though). The battery is what caused me to try 8S on my E-rap 90 MD500. I could then fly three flights without recharging. Really it does fly just fine on 8S as long as you are flying it "scale". I save the 10S flights for loops and rolls!!! That always gets the old guys grumpy!!!

Oh by the way a TP 6S 5000 will cost ya $300. I can get 10S 3700 for that too or really close. I haven't had the chance to try the A123s yet.

thanks for the input. i will try the 8S as i have the packs sitting around. i think with the right gearing and motor selection (i am leaning towards a Neu that has 1050kV)the airwolf will have enough power for scale flight and if i click a swith and want to do simple aerobatic, i am hoping it will do that too
