Anyone have any experience with this engine?
What needle settings are you running from the closed position?

I installed one of these in a Shuttle RG/M that I just built. Flew the heli this morning. This engine has loads of power Then I tried giving it full power to see if the engine can really push +9 pitch. Bogged down and died. After that the engine would not transition from mid stick to high. Engine would pick up fine till mid stick and then it seemed to get richer and richer with tons of smoke billowing out but the heli just refused to lift off. I screwed in the high speed needle till about 1 click from closed and same thing.

Back home I opened up the carb to see if there was any dirt but clean as a whistle. The carb is Promix II.

Thanks.

Hakim,

I don't know about the needle settings, I've heard anything from 1.5 to 7 turns, but it sounds like you might have blown the glow plug. Try a K&B4520 plug or a Thunderbolt Long R/C plug.

You might check www.ronlund.com/faqs.htm, particularly the one about breaking in an engine.

I would also check the throttle setup. http://www.ronlund.com/throttle.htm

Then I would go back to the settings that the engine was at when you got it. If you don't have the instructions, I would try opening the main needle 2 turns and closing the idle needle all the way. That may sound strange, but follow me on this.

Try to start it up. If it doesn't start, open the idle needle 1/8 turn and try again. Repeat this until the engine starts.

Once you have it running, see if it will transition to a hover. If it dies at about 1/4 throttle, open the idle 1/16 turn and try again. Now would be a good time to do the "pinch test". While the engine is idling, pinch the fuel line. It should idle, then speed up and die in about 6-8 seconds. If it dies immediately, open the idle some more until you get at least 6 seconds.

If you manage to get a decent hover, break the engine in before going to full throttle again.

Good luck,

I have the Webra 35 Brunette in my Raptor 30. Works great, better than my other Raptor with an OS. My main needle is out about 1 1/4 turns. But every engine is different depending on your pitch and throttle curves, fuel etc..

I use an OS #8 plug, Cool Power 15, SAB550's and have about 9 degrees pitch.

The 35 likes lower nitro and a long break in . I ran something like 4-5
gal through mine before full power was reached.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies.

Well, this morning I went flying again and it took me close to an hour of fiddling around to finally get the heli to hover.

Gary, I finally reached the same settings as you: 15% Coolpower, SAB 550 blades, OS #8 plug & +9 pitch and high speed needle 1 1/4 turns out. Man, I wish I got your post yesterday it would have saved me a lot of time.

This engine does have lots of power. I had to reduce my throttle curves way down.

Thanks again everyone

Sorry to go off topic here but doesn't anybody run more than 9 degrees. I am running plus 9 in idle up1 with a headspeed of about 1700 and am running 9.5 - 9.7 in normal with a headspeed of about 1600. No bogging and great climbing performance. And this all out of the TT36 that everyone rags on.

To Nem3

The pitch all depends on many things: Altitude where you are flying, blades and style of flying. The wooden blades typically have a thinner airfoil than the SAB 550 blades. I was running KSJ 550's and had a top pitch of 11 degrees.

9 degrees is a good starting point. But don't worry if your individual setup is different, everyone has different results. I found that each pair of wooden blades can need slight tweeking of the pitch.
