Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > YS or OS?

Location:

Who makes the best performing engines used in competition style flying for a 60 sized heli? I'm considering purchasing a Robbe Millenium II and I heard they were heavy. Which engine would make the best choice for that heli?

YS Pos:
Totally consistend run from full to empty.
Reliable and smooth
Will run "Out of the box"
Good instructions

Cons:
Needs at least 20% Nitro (30% recommended)
Filling and emptying is more involved due to the inbuilt fuel pump
Fuel line needs clamping after flight or flooding will occur as higher then exhaust pressure exists in the tank
Needs a good sealed tank
have heard of faulty regulator valves that cause lean engine runs
I own one and I love it

OS: Don't own a new type 60 as experience with the older types left a faul taste in my mouth.
Due to past experience I would not buy another one but I am aware that a lot of poeple love them and my experience with them is outdated.

Why just OS or YS
Include the Rossi
They have unbelievable power and the new 5 port designes give great reliablity.
I had a 15 year old Aero version in my X-Cell and it out powered anything on the marked at the time (2 years ago).
Seen another one that was a heli version in an X-Cell and it's power was just awesome.
They run on 5% Nitro.
My next engine will be a Rossi right next to the YS even that they are harder to get here in Australia.

why OS or YS?

It just so happens I live in Philadelphia and I ran into a guy named Brett Moorer and he's known to make miracles happen with the OS engines. In fact his motors have won championships and earned world records back in 1997. I was told that the Rossi engines like to hold high speed rpms when setting up the carb. I also heard that Rossi is harder to setup and maintain running than the OS. It's true they good make real nice power though and they run on low nitro. The OS carb is better for setting up in dual mode. I'm a begginer so I'm not ready for the engine screaming all the time. When I need more power I think I'll let Brett custom build the OS engine. He manages to get ungodly power from those things.

Thanx for the advice Alfred, I'm still learning though.

YS

When it comes to the 60's it's a tough choice. They both make good power and are liked by many.

Given my experence with the OS after going through some real ass pain with it I think I would try a YS in my next 60 machine. Buddy of mine has gone through considerably less pain than I with his YS.

I like the fuel pump in the YS, it makes for a very consistant running engine.

Hey volkul

Hi volkul,

Did you get my email?

It's still a toss up. Since I know someone very familiar with OS I'm leaning toward it. When i get so I'm profiecent at playin with them myself I might branch out to other brands.

As a learner who has somebody at hand with experience on the OS I agree and go with the OS.
Nothing worse then being stuck with an unknown engine and no help at hand.
Hey Volkul
The best thing about the YS is it's totally consistend run from full to empty, absolutely no change.
Also tank location is a thing of the past.
Starting is a breeze, turn the engine over with the electric starter for 10 seconds then connect glow plug driver and start.
No hassle no pain.

Just thought I'd add my 2p worth and back the good 'ol ROSSI. I have one in my Futura (a 65 although it says 61 on the case) and run it on STRAIGHT fuel (yes I am tight with the cash!!) without any problems. The only gripe I have - and it's not really the engines fault - is that you need a whole lot of power to start the thing after a week of sitting on the bench.

Cheers
Richard.

How much oil are you running in your fuel?
try to pinch the fuel line at idle on the last flight of the day as this will get rid of a lot of excess fuel and oil. This should help with easier engine turn over.
Is it an ABC or ringed engine?
You can also install another copper head gasket without loosing hardly any power. This will help with your high compression.
None of this is necessary but can be done if the starting is becoming a pain.

Oil content running about 18% at the moment (fully synthetic).
I always try to run the engine dry on the last flight, but it still seems 'gungy' after sitting for a couple of days.
True about the compression, I have on a couple of occasions loosened the plug to get the thing going and forgotten to tighten it back up before flying it and the engine didn't complain at all (in fact on one occasion seemed to run a little better!). Going to add another washer to the plug when I get the chance and watch it closely to see if I get any adverse affects.

Cheers

Sounds like too much compression, when I bought my 2 Rossis they actually came with 2 gaskets each.
I would try to get a couple of gaskets and try.
If it's an ABC then if run in correctly they can even develop more compression, mine did to the point that my heavy duty starter couldn't turn them over. A gasket fixed the problem.
