e-Ark X-400 - MX400 > So new, a NOOB is a veteran by comparison

I took the plunge after flying fixed wing and stepped into the world of precision flying and fun, with Helicopters.

Now, I'm truly new and do not have a clue what I am doing wrong. I bought the Heli Max 400 Pro from Tower Hobbies with stock Heli-Max Brushless 6 Pole Motor. It came with the 6EXHP radio in the combo as well.

I have it assembled but the BIG problem is I cannot get it off the ground. Without adjusting the Throttle and Pitch curves as I approach P3 on the controller the motor bogs down and doesn't produce anymore power. I thought this was a Battery issue and recharged the battery (LiPo). I tried again but to no avail, and I secluded myself to a corner to contemplate my failure hovering over RUNRYDER trying to find an answer. Well, I stumbled across a thread with some intuitive radio settings that got me thinking.

http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t349907p1/

So I charged up my battery again and set my radio Throttle and Pitch curves to what he recommended in the thread above. ONCE AGAIN, I applied power and at about P3 for the Throttle she got light on the skids, but as I proceeded beyond that point, the motor again bogged down and didn't want to play anymore. So I turn to you fellow flyers and experts on the matter. Anyone got any idea what I'm doing wrong, so I can actually fly this overgrown paper weight? Keep in mind this is entirely stock kit from TOWER HOBBIES so what you see for a combo there is what I got.

Any help appreciated!

Throttle curve

When you say the motor bogs, does it just quit at about mid stick or does it just not have enough power to get in the air?

I know what you are talking about. Let's see if I can help with some settings.

With the radio in stunt mode and the stick at 1/2 throttle you should be at 0 degrees pitch. All of your control linkages should be staight and level. If not then you need to adjust mechanically to ensure that everything is straight and level. Collective servo should be as dead center as possible. The collective arm should be level.

I use an XP6102 JR radio with futaba servos and a futaba gyro.

My Throttle curve in normal is: 0 - 25 - 50 - 75 - 90
My Throttle curve in stunt is: 90 - 75 - 50 - 75 - 90

My Pitch curve in normal is: 25 - 35 - 50 - 75 - 100
My Pitch curve in stunt is: 0 - 25 - 50 - 75 - 100

swash is set to normal.

Get the heli to hover in normal mode first. Make small adjustments to throttle and pitch until you achive stable hove and good head speed. Low head head speed makes for a twitchy bird. Higher head speed makes for a stable flyer.

Try this and let me know.

Well, my son has the MX450 which is a
really good flyer.

I have the MX400 Pro and it too is an
excellent flyer. Mine is all stock
except for an UltraFly ESC.

We both use Futaba 6exh radios.

If you can't figure it out I could
give you my settings to try.

Also, what size lipo are you using?
'C' rating?....MAH rating?

Thanks for all the help! I have done a mass of tweaking and have the head speed up, curves set properly and blade pitch angles correct. Now, it works great...

mee too

my mx400 pro did the exact sme thing..spun up the blades, and right when you think it should take off- it sounds as if the pitch is too extreme and bogs down..i just reset my transmitter, and it got better!

"it's got big pointy fangs......look at the bones!"......run away!!

Also, make sure your motor is not turning in reverse.

Big thanks to everones advice on here! I am finally airborne and enjoying the time. It turns out the Electrify battery I was given with the combo from Tower was not good at all. I dunno if it is a bad cell or bad sell...

At the suggestion of a local Trex450 guy, I bought some DN Power Packs with balancer combo from XUS. Great buys, and gave me about 10 minutes of hovering around time.

Again thanks for all the help fellas, and friendly skies.

Good thread for 400 people.

I recently got the 400 Pro as well. Can you tell me what battery packs were recommended? I'm also wondering about Rx battery packs and what works best for that. My kit should be ready to make first flight this weekend.
