Aerobatic 3D Contest > Will a 50 size electric/nitro or 90 size electric ever win 3DM??

90 size nitros have always won in the past. Probably due to the impression they make - size, noise, smoke, power etc.

Does that mean if you don't fly a 90 nitro, you're at a disadvantage?? Sucks to be sponsored flying anything else & can't make the switch.

I for once would love to see an electric win as that's all I fly!

It's anybody's game nowadays. The best pilot will win regardless of what considered to be some of the better equipment they use. Or what considered to be some of the better poweplants they use, electric or glow. Sure some equipment will give you the edge but I think the days of a .90 glow being the only viable option for a competitive 3D machine is over.

Well, I can't speak for the 3DM, but after competeing in the XFC 5 years and judging this year, I can tell you that it is surely possible. Daniel J. could have won this year. The spread was very small, and Alan just absolutely nailed his last round of requireds which solidified his victory. Had Alan/Bobby faltered just a smidge, Daniel could have taken it.

The electrics have the pop to put on a great flight. On a given day, yes, the electrics can win.

If you look at how many of the hotdogs are running 50 sized machines it is not only very possible, but "very" likely to happen soon, all imho

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

Interesting question. I think it has alot to do with 'presence'. I've always been blown away with the likes of Andreas Rummers flying (& his missus aint too bad neither ) and of course Daniel Jetschin. However, they fly electrics, which, due to the sound, simply don't have the presence of a nitro heli. I feel the same applies when comparing a 50 against a 90. The 90 will be more impressive than a 50 simply because of it's size and presence. A slightly better flight on a 50 over a 90 will often give a lesser wow factor than the 90. There is ofcourse the fact that a 90 can do it bigger, but as the 50s become lighter, they can begin to match the apparent profile of the 90.
