Hi
Does anyone know if the XLV clutch can replace the original clutch on an Acrobat directly, without changing anything else?

If you mean the Vario Acrobatic, yes it's a direct fit. I have one on mine. It's definitely worth the change if you need more clutch.

I have built two XLV's for turbine conversion based on the gasser kit and both have had the same clutch as my Acrobatic came with. Do you have to specify you want the larger clutch? Craig

The big clutch is optionl, and works much better

I just fried my clutch on a photo shoot in 95 degree weather a few days back. The heli bogged into govornor oscillation and it piro'ed 180. I was able to slightly unload the engine and return to base in FFF. Thankfully no damage, job was complete by then, and the customer was not bothered by the unusual flight.

I ordered a new lining, but tried something else in the meantime: I got two layers of grey cardstock gasket sheet from the auto parts store, then glued them onto the bell with JB weld. I then placed coke can aluminum as a shim all the way around, and pushed the clutch in to press the epoxy layering in. The next morning I pulled the coke can, and discovered that I had a good snug clutch that holds well. Very happy with my homemade clutch

Now for a long term solution, been watching the XLV clutch, and I feel it is the solution. Perhaps Vario will someday spec the large clutches on all of the gassers...

Eric good move. I was going to try different clutch liner when I was having trouble. I thing that stuff in there from the factory is some pretty strange material.

You may have the problem licked. Keep us posted. If it doesn't work for you I can you the large XLV clutch is a no-brainer.

Thanks, actually FCM kindly sent me another stock clutch, for the twin engine conversion, two engines and clutches is one way of reducing torque load. But better clutch design is appropriate at this point for Vario. I got 9 months worth of frequent stop and go operation with 810 blades, so I am not to bothered by this at this point compared to what I've experienced with other helis.

Mcmaster Carr sells friction materials with differing qualities, I may try some of that later on, the gasket stock I used was just something I had in the garage, slightly more rubbery than the stock material, but still has the paper feel.

I would be bothered if the stock one is slipping just a little at full loading. When the heli is far away it can be difficult to discern between settling with power and a slightly slipping clutch. I don't have a method of measuring that at this point.

Hootowl you had your share of clutch issues right?

clutch

I used the gasket material years ago on the GMP clutches years ago with good results, I am going to try the same thing on the Predator.

what clearence did you use on the XLV clutch?

Hi

For those who have done it, can you list what is required in the way of part numbers to carry out the conversion from a stock clutch to the XLV clutch.

Also any problems or tricky areas identified during the conversion.

Thanks

Another nice thing about the XLV clutch is the greater flywheel weight it gives the engine. My 260 and 230 idle reliably at a much lower rpm than before. The first time I tried it I spent a while seeing just how slow I could get the engine to go before it quit. It will still idle at a throttle setting very close to full closed.

All you need to convert is P/N 830/63 and 830/61. The liner comes with the bell but you have to cut it to length and glue it in. Spare liner is P/N 830/69. Buy a new C clip P/N 64/57.

My first conversion was a bit tight and I shimmed the crank taper to allow the bell to rotate without catching the shoes but my second one fitted perfectly.

Biggest issue is affording to buy the parts!

Paul.

Sure did. I tried all new parts with no fix then Joe hooked me up with the big dog XLV. Instant cure in a factory solution.

Long term update on the gasket stock clutch.

I just pulled the clutch I mentioned on 08-09-07 above, it has a lot of flight time on it, and still looks good, no glazing, no visible loss of material. I am about to convert the spare clutch to this gasket material shortly, it seems very good compared to me. For comparison I was running a newly fitted Vario liner on the other engine at the same time (twin eng. machine) and the vario liner has some glazing apparent in the 5 months of use, but no symptoms of slippage yet. I am still interested in the XLV clutch as a means of providing more mass for smoother power delivery in the 26cc and larger versions of the engine, maybe later on.

I was always suspicious of the "cork" style material that comes with the stock Vario Acrobatic clutch. It would slip and burn black quite easily. The change in liner material seems to be the solution if you choose to keep the stock clutch.

Thanks again Eric for reporting.
