bosshoss you are talking about a organized event on helicopter. It's is not hop scotch or jump rope or jacks. they are well crafted and (in most cases) well mantained hotrods of the sky. there is a reason plankers and heli. pilots don't see eye to eye. there fly Ugos while we fly Ferarris'. trust me when you get past hovering and start doing so sport flying you will see the dif. also everyone that walks out there front door takes risks we just do it together. happy flying and I hope noone ever get killed because you called it it would wiegh heavy on you or at lest it should. that's bad carma to even think such a thing. I hope you change your mind and start enjoying you hobby. it is the best time in a feild I have ever spent.

Bosshoss is way over the top. However, he does have a point. You can fly on the deck, and still far enough in front of you to keep a safer margin for error. If anything, these accidents only prove the point.


Oh, and I know of quite a few planks that fly like Ferraris, not like Yugos, right down on the deck, bouncing on their rudders. Seperating ourselves from others, even plankers, that enjoy hot rodding their flying machines, that's just bad kharma. We all defy gravity together. Let's just be glad none of the injuries were serious.

Wow, the ground was closer than I thought.

I just got to watch the video and it was a tail strike, the RR camera man edited the film so unless someone else was taking videos, anyone who was not there won't be able to see just how close Mike came to being seriously injured. I am sure there are other videos of the incident out there,I counted several people on the flightline with video cameras.

The post that Boss made was a little over the top, but none the less is basically right. I have been flying for 25 years almost and I am just 31. Been at helis for right at 10 years now and I will state and several guys on here can back me up that I can do on the deck and do on the deck 3D.
With that being said, this mishap and I am GLAD that is all it was just shows no matter how good the pilot is and we all know Henry is, is that things can happen outside of the pilots control and that happens so fast life changing things can happen. Henry really ducked the bullet in that the man could have been killed and I am sure Henry knows it and has probally thought about it 100 times or more by now.
Guys get out there and do demos and we ALL have a LOT of personal pride in wanting to "up" one another. Lets admit it we all do, it is what drives us to get better and when you push the limit things happen. I am not saying stop pushing the limts, that is what makes the hobby fun, but as the flying increases the safety measures must too. It is just as impressive to the crown to see guys doing on the deck 3D from 30 feet away as it is 10 feet away.

Airplane guys suffer the same ills. I have hover a giant scale gas plane that weighs over 35lbs and has a 150cc engine on the front right over the flight line fence on the deck or I can do it 20 feet out over the run way where if there is a air bubble in the line and the engine burps or it goes into lockout or etc if falls on its hind end and I go pick up the pieces, BUT no one is hurt.

I said all that to say this, lets keep on pushing the limits in flying that is what is fun, BUT lets keep GOOD common sense with us at all times. This is NOT Henry's fault. He did not mean to do it at all. It is the event organizers as much as anyone for letting people get that close. Period.

Hi Quick, and everyone else. Thanks for all the well wishes. Yes, there was video. I spoke to two people that had it on tape and forwarding the tape to me for my own curiosity. I'm very anxious to see it. As for where I was in relation to the pilot station and the flight line; I was perfectly in line with the rest of the media. No closer to the flight line than anyone else. Just wrong place, wrong time. As for my positioning, I was sitting "Indian" style about 20 seconds prior to the incident. Just before I had a "feeling" and got up to more of a squatting position that wouldn't leave me so prone. Because of my proximity to the action I will often times think to myself what my plan is should something come my way. This time my plan was to roll to my right. As I was shooting photos I was very focused on the helicopter and not paying too much attention to the noises around me. Through the viewfinder I could see the blade disk getting closer and closer, and I registered that I could not longer hear the engine. At this point I knew it was coming at me. My reaction "I believe" was as planned I rolled to my right, held my camera up to my face as a shield and took the brunt of the impact to my back. My injuries were a clean slice to the knee from the tail rotor requiring 3 stitches, a 6-8 inch long severe bruise to the back (from a main blade) and a baseball sized severe bruise to my hip ( I believe from the mainframe). These injuries were minor compared to what could have possibly happen. I'm very thankful for that.
Talking to Henry afterward. He was very apologetic. In my opinion it was not necessary. It was an accident, he did not to anything negligent, and I know the risk every time I put my self in that position.
At the end of the day it was a great event. Hopefully the incidents that took place this weekend will send everyone back home with safety a little more on their mind. I know that it's been a bit of "wake up call" to me and my responsibility to the community as the editor of the largest publication. There will be a renewed emphasis on safety in the pages of my magazine. All-in-all I had another great time at IRCHA and look forward again to next year.

IMHO The line should have been pushed back based on wind conditions alone. A 20mph face wind with a plane or Heli will carry that model quite a distance even after power is no longer being applied. The wind played a pretty big roll in this incident. Hey Mike glad to see you are in good spirits after the heli hit you, I ran up and the first thing I was looking for were tares in the back of your shirt right after that you were telling us to check your back I almost didnt want to look, I'm just glad you were ok.

I think as it has been said about conditions the event organizers should have stepped in and made a PROACTIVE, not REACTIVE move. I bet they do next time. It should have never been as close as it was eveit it was 70 degrees, clear skies and dead calm where the event organizers KNEW the demo pilots would be pushing the machines and things CAN and WILL happen.

Raptor 903D

Does anyone know what makes up the differences in the new Raptor 903D and the old 90SE besides the canopy? Did I miss something? Or are there just some new gearing setups and dampers in the head. Has anyone else taken a good look at it? That slim canopy did look cool as sh**!
