Can anyone direct me towards a manual for this gyro? I am about to start a rebuild process on an old Xcell 60.

Also have a question.....should I go ahead and use this gyro or just go with a 401/9254. I have no plans of doing 3D or anything like that. Just hover, fig 8's, simple stuff.

Thanks,

Pavan

Wow! That brings back some memories. I had that same gyro on my first heli, Kyosho Nexus. I would just go with the 401, that is a mechanical rate gyro, won't hold the tail very well, and sucks some battery juice. Initialazation takes a while also, waiting for the gimbles to spin up and become stable.
Sorry, don't know where you could find a manual, but good luck.

I suggest the 401 set up, but if you really want to use that one, I can check to see if I still have a manual. I have two of those 120s and one 130 still. The 130 is still installed in my enforcer. I have a 120 in another enforcer. The heading hold is so much better, but that old gyro is pretty straight forward. You adjust gain manually and if the servo is backward, you just turn over the connector. You connect one of those wires to the gear channel. Its a dual rate gyro and you can switch between the two with the gear channel.

Man, I miss the eighties.

Here is a link to the JR NEJ-130 gyro, which is similar to the 120 except the 120 allows for two switchable gain settings through the gain controller if you want. If you only want to use one gain setting, just don't plug in the gain controller, and adjust the gain on the gyro amplifier itself:

I have been flying my Concept 30 with a JR 120 gyro lately. No, it doesn't fly like a GY401; but it flies fine for hovering, fig 8's and cruising around, if you are familiar with flying a rate gyro. It does not hold well flying backwards.

If you have only flown heading hold gyros, then you would probably not like it and should use the 401. However, if you really want to get the feel of flying a vintage heli in its day, then I think the JR120 is a nice match. After all, Curtis Youngblood won a World Championship with that gyro, it can't be all that bad for its day

Rick

In going from a similar JR mechanical gyro (see my gallery) to a Futaba 401, I found that my hovering improved greatly - due to less input needed on the left stick.
Basically, you plug the gyro into the rudder servo connection on the receiver, the 'gain C' lead into another channel - probably 'retracts' and plug the TR servo into the gyro. You have apparently 2 gain settings, selectable via the extra channel switch. You'll want to turn the gain up as high as possible, without the tail 'wagging' in a hover. But, that gyro will drain your flight pack quicker than one of the newer ones, due to the need to run the spin motor.
If you can any way afford it, the 401 / 9254 is the way to go.

My personal opinion is that I don't want to risk vintage mechanics with vintage electronics.

I am running with rate gyros, so I can appreciate the flight characteristics -- but I am not prepared to lose a model (with few available spares) due to the characteristic glitches and electrical failures of the original model.

Whichever way you decide to go... Happy Flying!
