I did my maiden flights today. I started with 1.5 turns out for 3 tanks. I just hovered up and down slowly from landing to about 40 feet. Every 30 seconds or so making a landing back to idle for 20-25 seconds. I leaned it about 2 clicks and did the same for the next tank.

Everything went well. I have some questions about idle speed and GY611 setup.

The hyper stalled at idle a few times sitting there and when I tried to transition to flight. How do you set engine idle. If I adjust my servo travel points to maintain a good idle it might engauge the clutch. I dont want that while Im walking it from the starting box to the take off point.

My GY611 was extreamly responsive where do I adjust the piro speed? Also the tail bounces a little upon input. I mean when doing a fast right or left turn when I stop the fast turn the tail bounces back about 8-10 inches. I played with the gyro gain as well. This solved about 20% of my tail issues. I still have alot of bounce.

This is my first nitro.....all I have to say is... "I hope this oily mess lessens when the motor is final tuned." I think I ruined my shirt I was wearing.

The Piro rate is set by the Rudder ATV's.

As for bounce, I had a simlar issue om a Freya, I had to extend the Servo ball out on the gyro, which solved it.

Reading that the gain can be as low as 20% on the gy611 comkpared to the normal 37% on other birds.

The oily mess will reduce once the motors run in a tuned correctly, but it will still be there

The )S 50 Hyper is prone to stalling.

you can ease it up slowly or it can be tuned out.

What postion have you go the low end needle set to?

If you take 12 a line staright through the middle of the Carb, it should be slighly to the left a tad and runs smooth then.

I havent touched the low needle yet. It is factory set. I heard that you have to do the breakin through final tune before you screw with the low end needle.

But as far as the factory set position. Picturing the carb like a clock, the air inlet being 12:00 position and the black bolt on the carb being the 6:00 position. It is about in the 11:00 position. I have also heard that the lowend needles when adjusting will only need very slight turning.

Right now my engine is making tons and tons of smoke with a few clicks shy of 1.5 out.

The 611 servo horn I followed Finless videos. I think its about 13mm from the center with my travel limits set on the 611 115% A and B.

What does the D1DA and the D1IA settings do? Mine are set at stock settings right now. I played with ATV's for rudder while flying today and they didnt seem to adjust the piro speed.

electric. on your D1I it should be 15% both left and right and on the D1D try 50% in both directions, this will prevent the boune and possible gear stripping in flight.

Try the rudder ATV at 115 - 120 for a very fast piro

I have my low idle positioned at 12:30 and high needle set at around 1 turn. I can touch the back plate for at least 5 seconds before my finger gets hot. Ive got 3 gallons of fuel through it and the piston looks like the day I bought it. As fas as your tail vibration, I had this while I was dialing in the engine it goes away. but if the tail wags after you stop a fast piro your gyro is too sensitive, I had to hook the linkage closer to the servo on the servo arm so it would be less sensitive "because I was already at 0 delay on my 401". Hope this helps, once u get it flying good, hold on its a great machine

Actually, If the tail doesn't normally wag but does when stopping a piro - you'll want to increase the delay

Yea, that is not a good idea. You need to use the trim to maintain an idle Here is how I do it(assuming the rod linkage is correct, and everything is at 90).
1) disconnect the linkage
2) turn the trim all the way down (throttle)
3) place the throttle stick all the way down
4) turn the rx on
5) adjust the endpoint so that the linkage fits on the ball, fully closing the carb with no binding.
6) Now go to full throttle, adjust the endpoint so that the linkage fits on the ball, holding the throttle fully open without binding.
7) snap the linkage on.
8) adjust the trim so that the carb is slightly open (I don't know the exact degree here.) On the JR radio, I start the heli with the throttle trim in the middle and then slide it down to about one quarter. That gives me a nice idle without engaging the clutch.
8a) On the Futaba radio you have a kill switch, and the trim is digital. You'll just have to give it a couple clicks on the trim? I use the Futaba for the electrics

tuning the engine, that is a tuff one. I have three OS50, the first two. I did little to nothing and they ran, and still run great. The last one that I purchased is giving me fits. I'm not that great at tuning engines, but here is what little I know;
1) The pinch test, after starting the engine pinch the fuel line closed. The engine should run for 3 to 5 seconds. To long and it is to rich, to short and it is to lean. Adjust the low end to get it around 3 to 5 seconds.
2) now the high end. first you want to get it to transition from idle to hover smoothly. Again I am assuming that you have a proper pitch and throttle curve, and the governor is off.
3)Attempt to transition from idle to hover, if it stalls it is either to rich or to lean. Yea, I know? but that is what the manual says. I have found with the OS50, to start the high end about 1.5 turns out. Then start leaning it in, a couple of clicks at a time. Till you get a smooth transition.

PS if the engine gets too hot, stop, else all of your tunning efforts will be wasted. And always check to make sure the muffler is on tights, and there are no air leaks.

You might also go to Raptor Technique, he has a tunning section there. And club members are the best. My best suggestion is to go to the club member with the smoothest running engine and ask for help and pick his brain while you are at it.

I'd rather be flying

I richened the needle valve back to 1.3 and then adjusted the mixture control screw. I ended up leaning the scew to about 1:00. Now from idle to spin up is great. Like my old .21 car engine. Sweet.

Then went back to main needle valve leaned it out bewtween flights about to 1 1/4 out.

Smoke has lessened but there is still a prominate trail when flying. I asume this is about right. I can hold my finger on the back plate indention for about 15-20 seconds before it starts to feel hot, but I can hold my finger on it forever with no burn.

When Ive landed and are in the idle position some oil spurts come out of the muffler deflector but not the massive hugh puddle as before. A tank last about 7-7:30 of flight.

Am I still rich? Is it normal from a factory setting to have to adjust the mixture control screw from its original position at 11:00 to almost 1:00. It made a night and day difference from idle to HS climb. My engine smokes all the time but not like it used to.....so much smoke you almost had to squint your eyes and you could see all the oil cloud that landed on the parkinglot.

The main still sounds like it is a bit on the rich side . . idle sounds fine.
