Gohbee Aviation Stinger 30-90 > Gohbee 50 Is It Worth It ?

Lets start by saying that this is not my first helicopter. I have built and flown Schluters,Concepts,Kalt,X-Cells,Hirobo's,Align,and Jr's. I had got out of the hobby for a few years and had sold most of my helis . I was looking for a low cost 50 size and found the Gohbee 50 , so I ordered one. I started the build and immediately had trouble mounting the motor. It would not fit ! (Yes I left off the washer). The Hyper 50 head hit the inside of the frame . Enter the dremel. I relieved the front portion of the frame and got the motor to slide in. Next problem the bolt holes for the motor were not correct. So a search of the web confirmed that Gohbee knew there was an issue with the bolt holes not correct and instead of repairing the problem they recommend slotting the holes. So I slot the holes and get the motor installed. Instruction state install tank brace. No brace in kit. Email to Gohbee and reply comes back you don't need this part and it is optional. Not listed on there site as option and instructions not updated. Emailed Gohbee they change the website. Next I checked the bolts for loctite and found the spindle bolts have ZERO loctite. All others are ok. I next went through and check the links for tightness. Had to free up a couple this is normal on all kits. However the pitch cage is binding. I had to disassemble the cage and add a shim to straighten. I installed my radio gear and did the setup, off to the field.
I do my prefight and start it. Clutch is hanging . I do a fast burn in and proceed to hover to check out. The heli has a vibration. Set it down clutch will not disengage. Put it back in the vehicle fly my other heli. Disassemble the clutch, damaged also notice the clutch bell does not track true. Jump on the web and order RAPTOR clutch ,flywheel, gear and bell. Replace them all. Recheck head ,blade and tail balance all ok. Recheck setup ok. Next time at the field. Clutch works great. Still have slight vibration tracking off a little . Tried to adjust tracking unable to get correct. Load the heli back in the vehicle. Check head excessive slop in dampners. Ordered the 90 duro Gohbee dampners and at the same time ordered the aluminum blade grips. I already had the aluminum center wich I installed on the new kit. New problem the dampners do not fit the head correctly and even with 1 shim on each side the grips do not tighten as the spindle appears too short. Tried without shims does not fit correctly cannot tighten the spindle and in the process I have damaged the new bearings. Is it worth it? NO ! Would I buy another Gohbee? NO ! I should have spent the extra money and bought a RAPTOR.

My engine mount had the same problem. It slid in perfectley but the wholes were off. I am not sure if the gohbee was made for a different .50 engine or not. No matter, 5 minutes of dremel work and i was good to go.

I am not sure what the tank brace is. I know the manuel needs to be upgraded some.

Loctiting bolts is a given IMO. You shouldn't depend on factory biult ARF helicopters.

About the clutch.
My blades will always spin when i take my hands off them. I can get them them to stop sppinning with (for me) and unconfotably low idle. I may fittle with it later as my engine finishes it brake in.

Dampers
Mine fit in perfectley. It took a good amount of force to get them in but once in the perform great. I am not sure how the spindle could be to short and then not be able to tighten the bolts. Some pics maybe? Maybe you somehow installed them back in wrong.

Is this heli worht it ?....Yes ! without a doubt !

I had no problems with my motor mount...it was a tight fit but no problem...did not slot holes etc. The only problem I had was my own fault.. my clutch was initially rubbing on the top of the clutch bell...and I discovered that I did not have the starter shaft assembly pulled all the way up...once I did that everything worked ... as designed...no problems...I did dial indicated everthing in the drive train...which is important...if you don't do that ...it is real easy to get vibrations...etc.

It's strange to me what some people do with and expect of a low cost heli..! It seems that they expect it to be the same as a heli that cost TWICE..as much or more...you just have to give them a little more attention in the build. If you do not wish to or are not particularly adepth at mechanical things...then perhaps you should spend the extra money and buy something that goes together a little easier....in my opion this heli builds pretty easy but the setup my need a little extra attention...

Like all helis....you can get a deffective part in a Gohbee kit...what should be done at that point is to call David at Gohbee...he is a great guy and offers exceptional service...and is more than willing to replace defective parts...if you don't this and go buy raptor parts etc. ... you have made your choice and should have nothing to cry about....except your own poor choice.

This is a great flying heli....with more aerobatic capabilities than
most pilots can handle.

The people who want to get on here and trash this heli are generally making a statement more about their own mechanical skills...than they are about the heli...it's kinda sad .....

Is this heli worth it?....that's a no brainer...
Is it for everyone?....if you expect it to be like a toaster and just plug it in and go...then you are going to be disappointed...after all...helis are fairly complex machines.

My gohbee was a gift from a freind for fixing his jetski (not a very good freind). Had a buttload of problems from day one. The main one was the head going out of track every other day, others included the tail rotor hub breaking, main gears stripping, stupid designed main hub assembly wore out about three times. I might have flown it no more than 10 times in 4 months, and this was my first helicopter, so you can imagine the frustration I had trying to learn how to fly with this turd..IMO the fit and quality of the parts from gohbee are not up to par with even cheaper helis, even the replacement parts i had to get didnt fit very well, they all needed modifications to make them work. I now have a e620 raptor, 2 raptor 90s, and a e325 mini titan. I have learn how to fly with the e-raptor, have about 40 flights with no problems...every body gives gohbee an A+ for customer service, I have had my raptor for a while and I dont remember ever needing to call TT customer service for anything, When I called gohbee to talk about ordering a replacement metal blade grip due to a crash from the rotor hub breaking, whoever i was talking to was rude and acted like i was bothering him, that was the time i made my decision to get rid of it.

Took all the electronics off the gohbee and threw the frame and all parts in the trash...I guess i could of gave it to someone i didnt like...

and before any of you gohbee reps start to question my intelligence and mechanical skills, i am an aerospace/mechanical engineer with a doctorate in fluid dynamics, and I build race cars and restore muscle cars in my spare time, so i know what im talking about...

first flight - stripped gear, saved it, had the sticks on the bottom
second flight - head was wore out where it bolts to the main shaft
third - another stripped gear, resulted in crash.
forth thru sixth - o.k. head wore out again, traking was going in and out of adjustment.
seventh - tail hub broke and shot the grip off into the woods, resulted in crash.

final flights i just hovered waiting for something else to break off..

and this was a new heli right out of the box, i had 8311 servos, pcm reciever, 611 gyro, and hyper 50..


Its just like buying a car, sometimes you get a lemon...

But it did hover nice and fly well when it was working...

I have over 20 flights in mine no problem. I am even running a 2000 HS and the tracking is right on. Are you sure you gear mesh was good. In your first crash did you hit the tail rotor?

Sorry to here about your bad results. Gohbee does have a really good reputations to make things right.

Thats nice TYREE bash me for my opinion. You know nothing about me or my skill level. In the time I have wasted screwing with the Gohbee I bought a JR Venture 30. Guess what the motor fit the first time. The clutch worked. It did not vibrate and only required a turn of the link to set the tracking. When I was looking at a 50 size to buy I searched the web and saw some discussions about minor issues with the Gohbee. I thought as you do inexperienced modelers or whiners. Now I know firsthand they were not isolated cases.

Bobo not disagreeing with you at all , and most all the issues you mentioned I've had from time to time. The fact is though i fly the crap out of the stingers I have and they have brought me a long way. That being said, You bought a Venture?Before I say what i was gonna say , may I ask why? Well let me just say it (flame suit on) Dont crash ! Expensive parts,REALLY Expensive, decent to good quality , but availability is terrible too , atleast Horizon dealers around here. Just curious when you said you bought a Venture, would have figured Align.

Umm, under $400 for the standard model which is more than enough heli for anyone - hardly a "high" price. I know the Pro costs a bunch, but there is a lower priced model that flies just as well.

I really couldn't afford even the 400 model. It doesn't come with blades or hyper. A sweet looking machine non the less


I got the gohbbe with all of that for about 500.

just adding 2 cent worth

let me start off by saying I work at and run a LHS here in Florida
and we are a dealer for Gohbee.
i also own many models of heli's eletric and nitro's from xcell to a venture 50 I had a 50 Stinger and sold it due to needing cash ONLY
the point to the story is that I am now building a new heli
and guess what yuppers it is another stinger 50 i just sold my xcell SE
well why putting in my motor it did not fit so i took 2 minutes and drilled the holes down and it works great i have 3 flights on it and never had a problem in my opinion the Gohbee 50 is one of the most forgiven heli i have ever flown it is so stable in ff flight
and controls well in 3D what more can you ask for
So what if you have to take a couple of extra minutes to maybe drill a hole bigger or even put a screw in it if the bird is stable in flight it is a great heli BUT that is just me !

You're right about at least one or more of the following things....I don't know what your mechanical skills are like and I don't know what your attention to details is like and I don't know what your skill level at setting up a heli is like etc. etc. ....what I should have said(because I really can't pinpoint why you had so many problems) is ...

Engine alignment

The Stinger 50 is sold with an OS51 so the holes should be set right for that motor. I have two 50's . One is close but the second needs work. I'm waiting for a reply from Gohbee to see what their recommendations are. The motor slides in freely with the clutch but the holes are off. The frame also does not sit flat on the desk [with the skids off].

I encountered this frame issue before with a Stinger 30/0S37. I called Gohbee for a friend who owned the heli and was told this " We tell our customers to ream out the holes if they dont fit". Hmmm. I asked when and where they told customers this. The reply was " We tell them if they call in."

Also, The frame strips out easily if the screws are removed more than once. The tail tightening bolts [4] frequently strip on the captive nut slot. Gohbee said just use a set of pliers to hold the nut. Hmmmm again.

Is the Gohbee 50 worth it? Thats a tough call. They fly well if you have the time to get them set up right. However, a Raptor does not need the massaging that a Gohbee does. QC in China does not appear as good as Raptor QC in Taiwan. This may be the entire Gohbee issue.

I'm also glad I did not bid on BOBOs' G50 when it was on Ebay. [neither did anyone else]. I guess this dosent say a real lot for our Gohbees. If BOBO had that much trouble with it, it may just be a real lemon.

I still don't see how everyone is having this much of a problem with the engine bolt alignment. It honestly took me 20 minutes to fix. The rest of the heli went together without a problem.

Can't wait untill the new fram comes out for the nitro. I hope david fixes the alignment problem.
