Q1
Has anyone found or used tapered bearings as a replacement for the stock items?

Q2
Is there a heli on the market that uses tapered bearings ?

Q3
If no heli kit exist that uses tapered bearings, Why not?

I included a pic for reference of what I mean

It's suppose to do that !

Do they make tapered bearings that small ?

Funily enough I asked Augusto of CX fame about this for the Avant heli's. He said he had researched it, and it is possible to get them that small, but they are expensive.

Bearings

After doing a google search I found a couple of companies that do make them that small enough for a 30 size heli.

However most are too thick.

So why don't Heli makers use this type of bearing ??

It's suppose to do that !

well, what is the load capacity of them vs. a thrust & radial combination?

No one is using them because I'll be that by time you calculate
size, cost, availablity, load carrying ability, etc, the thrust/radial
combo 'wins'.

tapered bearings

they handle thrust loads very well, however the problem is the radial clearance. You must set them with pretty tight lateral clearance (thrust) or the radial clearance will be too much. If you set the clearance below zero (preload) it makes them slightly harder to rotate. Lets say if you had one set perfect and used it as a main blade thrust bearing, the higher your head speed (more centrifical force) the clearance would start to open up and increase, the more centrifical force the more it would open up. I suppose you could use it as a thrust bearing (main blades) but you would need two ball bearings to maintain good radial positioning. Manufacturing costs are higher, the flat thrust bearings being used now are much cheaper to manufacture.

I wasn't thinking about the bearing expanding under lateral load,
thereby increasing friction under stress.
But they do, do well under radial stress.

It's suppose to do that !
