You must set them with pretty tight lateral clearance (thrust) or the radial clearance will be too much. If you set the clearance below zero (preload) it makes them slightly harder to rotate. Lets say if you had one set perfect and used it as a main blade thrust bearing, the higher your head speed (more centrifical force) the clearance would start to open up and increase, the more centrifical force the more it would open up. I suppose you could use it as a thrust bearing (main blades) but you would need two ball bearings to maintain good radial positioning. Manufacturing costs are higher, the flat thrust bearings being used now are much cheaper to manufacture.
