Radio - JR & Spektrum DSM > Spektrum module for 14MZ, another way to throw away money?

Was VERY happy today when I received my module for my 14MZ.
That was until I tried it...
Using 120 degree CCPM with AR7000 receiver.

I dont know if I do something wrong but I get TERRIBLE latency.

Pumping pitch up and down and some servo's lagging behind BAD, probably a degree or two in pitch...

Moving pitch up and down sometimes (often if you dont move much for a few seconds) makes the servo not move smooth but "staggers" (moving /slowing down/moving/slowing down). then if you continue pumping the pitch all of he sudden servo moves smooth again.

Am I doing something wrong here?
JKos, please try this one out with your equipment.

Ive tried both Spektrum cable layout (original in the receiver) and ive tried so I grouped all cyclic after each other in the Futaba 14MZ, not much changed...

Rebinding with the DX7 and its smooth as silk again.

Well, have you set your 14MZ to 8 ch PPM or 12 ch PPM ?

I also bought the Spectrum Module for my 14MZ and what a disappointment.
I can't believe this kit is sold for the Futaba 14MZ yet the RX that
comes with it accepts the bloddy JR type connectors only. I am not a
happy camper with this kinda crap. I can't hardly wait for the FASST
modules to come out.

Cheers

Kay

Ived tried 8ch PPM, 12ch PPM, both in normal an reverse.
No change.

I just hope that FASST dont use PPM stream, then it wont be any better I guess.

I dont think I will be flying with this, will rather go back to the DX7.

Interesting....very interesting. Why do you think it lags so much? is it cause it doesn't have servo sync like the DX7?

If I recall, PPM stream is as fast as it gets. It's what happens to the signal after it leaves the PPM stream where the latency is occurring.

Hard to capture on video, but here is a try, you can easiest see it on the set-screw (black spot) on the bottom part of the swash moving forth an back as well as up and down specially in the last part of the video..

Strange thing is that its not constant, in the beginning of the movie its Pitch/Aileron (not seen on this video) where there is latency then all of the sudden its all servo and then in the end its elevator/aileron+pitch...

Sometimes its alot worse sometimes its less..
Must be something with how the packages are encoded.

Why are you binding it to an AR7000 and not the AR9000 it came with?

Hard to see in the video. I watched it 3 times and finally saw what you are talking about.

Mine just came in today. I will bind it to one of my 7000's and see what it does. If it is as bad as you say, might just have to get a refund.

Yeah, its hard to catch on video, but you will see it directly if your act the same way.

Here is the 14MZ Channel number -> Spektrum translation table (manual was little fuzzy on this)

Channel 1: Elevator
Channel 2: Rudder
Channel 3: Throttle
Channel 4: Aileron
Channel 5: Gear
Channel 6: Aux1
Channel 7: Aux2

I have submitted a case to Horizon, gonna see what they answer.

this was from a reply that I got from Augusto about the spectrum modules for the 14mz:

Quote
Yes they are pretty good.

I had an issue at the begining that kept me confused. The CCPM movement was weird as if it had latency. It turned out that I wanted to match the spektrum receiver's channel labels so I assigned the channels in my 14MZ accordingly by programming without realizing that the 14MZ has faster internal processing of the channels that are natively assigned for the CCPM swashplate.

The solution was pretty simple.

Use the 14MZ in the default heli channel assignment and plug the servos in the receiver as per the 14MZ commands them and not how they are labeled in the spektrum receiver because those labels only match the Spektrum transmitters.

The only assignment you want to do is switch the throttle and gyro gain so that the failsafe in the receiver works correctly.

Also it's better to use the 9 ch receiver cause you get 2048 resolution.

Augusto.

His right, and wrong.

Its better then using spektrum "layout", but here comes the strange thing. Pump the pitch forth and back for 30 seconds at various speeds, during this it might be OK 20 seconds, perfectly leveled swash, then all of the sudden you get latency between aileron and pitch channel, you clearly see the swash dance, then perhaps 5 seconds later its gone for a while again, then returning.....

Strange is the first name only..
I really hate when its not consistent...

Mr Mel,

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for you Module.... It comes in a packaged box with an AR9000 a male /female bind plug, an Antenna assembly, the adapters for the 14MZ and 12Z. It also has the correct channel assignments from the Spektrum to Futaba outputs, in a supplemental manual as well as manual also the directions to upgrade you flash card to get all 9 channels out of your AR9000.

I can't help feel you got ripped off if you did not get all of these items.

I just got my module today, so hopefully I'll test it later tonight, using an ar9000. I might try it with a ar7000 also. can this module be used with ar6000?

Rhett... I can't fly, luckily the HC Profi Can!

I bought mine without the receiver also. Already have 5 AR7000's and don't need any more receivers at this time.

I just tried mine with an AR7000 and did not see any of the problems MrMel mentioned. Of course, I was only observing the servos as I don't have a CCPM helicopter at this time. As far as I can tell, the servos move evenly.

The main thing I am concerned about right now is that I will have to remove the module and antenna every time I place the transmitter in the case. I'm afraid that will cause wear on the effected parts. Any suggestions on how to get around this problem?

I really dont understand why anyone would try to use a JR/ spectrum product with futaba. It would be like using a hitec reciver that is compatable with other stuff. Yea it works but is your $1500 and up modle worth the risk. I dont think so. Just buy a DX7 and sell the 14 you will be happier in the long run and have a little cash in your pocket if you sell now. After the 9 comes out good luck selling your 12z and 14mz's.

Will see how it feels in the sky.

You dont have a 14MZ do you, if you did, you would know why.
(ps, if you read the thread instead of just the title you would see that I already have a DX7)
