OLD "40" machines

Jetset:

The Helibaby was a fixed pitch machine from the 70's used a .40 engine as did the Revolution 40. I think both had less power than the modern .32 engines but it was "state of the art" when I was learning.

Hi,
I bought a fixed pitch Mantis when it first came out, put a HP 40 in it and a Kraft radio, no gyro. flew it for a few years along with a Heliboy and Cricket. My Mantis flew very well, it would hover hands off. A year ago I cleaned out the basement and threw out the Heliboy , Mantis, and a Kalt Cyclone. I kept the Cricket and bought a Raptor to start flying again and I'm having a ball.

My LHS has a load of those spherical mufflers in a "sale of old bits of crap" bin in his showroom !! I thought they looked a bit old, covered in dust. Now I know what era they come from !!

Yes it is a manits, I worked with john simone @ american r/c. Yes the first mantis had wood frames but soon were changed to plastic. I still have some parts left.

Old Heli

Jetset, I think I have the heli you are talking about. It is a GMP Rebel that I bought back
in 1990. It is fixed pitch and was advertised
to fly with any airplane 40 size engine and airplane radio. I built it and tried to learn to hover with it with no help from anyone but I
never did anything but crash! It put me off helis until 2001 when I bought my Raptor 30.
I plan on trying to fly it this summer. I still have the old radio to : AristoCraft 550 PCM

My first heli was an American Revolution .40. The red anodized one with a K&B .40 and a heliball. I bought it used in 1980 at a garage sale for $100 complete with radio and ground gear. After trying to fly it for a while I eventually traded it to a friend. I also remember seeing the first ads for the Mantis and was thinking I would have better luck with one of those. I distinctly remember the advertising for the plastic composite construction. I never did buy one though.

Before anybody thinks that American was washed up when the Mantis came out think again. An old hobby shop owner here used to be a dealer for American and has a .60 size American Revolution heli that was about to be introduced before they took that plane through the roof. At first glance it looks like a GMP Competitor but its all anodised a light blue color. It is full collective and was definitely on par with any competitive machine produced then. The owner says it flew very well and he really liked it. But, he stopped flying it after American closed its doors because he knew no parts resources existed as the heli never reached mass production. When I get a chance I'll get some pics. I don't recall what American was going to call this heli but I think Phoenix or Firebird rings a bell. It would have been interesting to see how it would have fared as American, Like Min Air, wasn't dependant on Hirobo like GMP was.

Actually if you think about it, the plastic heli was a pretty forward thinking move and I'm wondering if it wasn't an industry first. This combined with the .60 that I've seen leads me to believe that American would have been an aggressive forward thinking company.

I'm wondering, was John Simone in the building when the plane hit it? If not, whats he doing now?

Wow....

Just found this post. Don't know how I missed it.
Bought one of these from a LHS for 20.00!!!!
I need the engine and clutch stuff for it. Eventually I want to restore it to flying condition. Hover it once then put it away.

Anybody have an old crashed one??

There is a flyer at my field that still flies a Revolution 60. It has a mechanical gyro but he makes it look easy. He only gets it out occaisionally as he usually flies pattern planes and is always practicing the pattern.

You jog my memories:

British Lark .25 fixed pitch, ca. 1974. No joy, never got off ground.

Dubro Tristar, ca. 1975, belt transmission broke after a few seconds.

GMP Cricket, ca. 1982, multiple demoralizing crashes. Only remaining early relic I still have.

SUCCESS!!!!! Kyosho Concept 30 DX, ca. 1990, learned to hover the first week. Learned forward flight.

After you learn how to fly, these old fixed pitch machines are real slow on the cyclic response, you have to think wayyy ahead. Cricket was thrilling to try to fly, after mastering the Concept, but no more. Too scary!!

So what happened to American RC? I saw a post mentioning a plane crashing into their building. Did that really happen?? Is that what put them out of business? I just assumed they had financial woes and folded.

I must say this sure generated alot of interest . I need just a few parts for this bird. If I'm to restore it, Like the main spur gear(60 tooth), & a fan shroud to cool things & thats pretty well it. I'm soooo close . Any Idea what canopy can cover this thing?
