Ok to explain the poll.

Some time ago it became apparent to me that everytime I was practicing videography manouvres over a period, if I went off and flew around doing loops etc, when it came back to the smooth flying I was all sticks and had to cool it and settle back to taking it easy.

It seemed to me this was wasting a fair bit of practice time getting the ability to fly smoothly over a set flight path and I re-assesed my aims or the point I am trying to acheive, which is heli cam work.

So I stopped doing any 3D on or off the sim in any form and stuck to only flying "scaler" like style of smooth predictable patterns.

I am reaping the benefits it seems and at this point some 6 months later with my flying it is so much smoother and have no problems holding smooth flight paths.
I found a few tricks to avoid sharp tail movments.
I find I can do the manouvres quicker without any trail runs to get settled.

I got thinking over time, I guess this is what all RC heli videographers do, by that I mean bite the bullet and stop doing 3D, and get focused on the aim of the game ever improving their gracefull manouvres.

Reading the input about gyro stabilisation systems in camera gear and the likes of what that is intended to cure as such, something occured to me. Maybe everyone that flies heli cams for commercial work does not limit themselves to the one kind of flying style and avoiding 3D type flying and zooming around, so I decided to ask.

62% do fly 3D + 16% on the Sim.

OK
I feel like I am staying the obvious here and perhaps it is, but then sometimes the obvious gets overlooked.
May I make a suggestion to the 78%, if you fly a heli cam for $commercial intent and also fly recreationally and in sporting style.
If you are having any issue regarding smooth flying for pics and or video, and perhaps considering fitting gyro stabilisation to the camera system to counter the effect of fast_fingers, perhaps try giving up the sport flying for a while and see what happens.
Give it 2 weeks, no loops, rolls, piro's or anything other than scaler like gracefull flight on and off the sim.
Flying the camera so to speak.

Youll never know if you dont give it go.
And after that if some do stop the sport flying perhaps it will be shown there can be benefits in avoiding flying sporting manouvres in the reach to be better at what you do for a $return.
On and outside chance, maybe you wont need to attach a pile of new fangled doohickies to fly the camera smooth for you.

3D Flying

It has been my observation that 3D flying and smooth precision are not normally in the realm of most of us. Now if you do precision flying like F3C, that is directly compatible with what we do in flying cameras. The F3C hover work is as demanding as holding a precise hover 150 feet up while the camera operator frames and takes the shot. probably more so.

I gave up 3D several years ago because it was developing bad muscle memory for the camera work. Took up F3C instead and the camera work improved exponentially.

Thanks Aercam

I guess that adds some merit to my theory and glad to see Im not alone on this theory..
I think (based on the Polls output) quite a few operators might find new found improvements in their work by going down the same road, doing the one thing and doing it the best.

I dont imagine many will be keen to rush out and try it tomorrow as it involves giving up some fun but if you where in doubt and in that seat, you might pay it some creed next time you note your tail a bit happy and too many angled horizons in shots..

Cheers
Dave

I have thought about this idea.. giving up 3D flying
and concentrating more on 'scale' type and FAI precious flying. 3D is great fun, but precious control is required for aerial photography work I can assume.

I am still thinking about it....

Setting up the Airfoil Tray -- putting the camera on!!

I have a bar of alum. cut and bent to the correct length's to mount my camera on the Airfoil M1 30 CF mount.

I am ready to mount it ( that means drill a hold in the CF tray on the Airfoil mount ).

I know that the camera has to be level and on the center of gravity on the mount.

any tips on doing this?

cheers,
Dean
