Women Pilots > How many girls fly? What stops the others?

Just wondering how many girls are flying heli...

Here in HK, I had not seen any until I met this young outgoing lady. Then me and my friends decided to train her. First by hooking her to this hobby (some trick we did), then buddy box with my friend, I am on the theoretical training, how does it fly? What are curves? ... Plus a lot of XTR training.

We even provide her a heli, all she needed was a radio so she bought a JR 9X. It has been eight weeks, never a crash and she now is confidence in hovering ... She is planning to building her first Trex 450 SE. I sponsor a gyro when others sponsor other parts. I even painted her a pink canopy.

Now we are so amused that she is not afraid of the silky skin killer (sun ray), hot, buds bite, travel to the field, early days, carrying the equipment ... After all, she is s cute girl, not what you may be thinking. LOL.

So what are the other obstacles to girls and how should we help to overcome? Any suggestion/comment is welcome.

Right On Bro. Sounds like you are doing everything right with her. This hobby needs more people like you.

And what do you mean she is cute but its not what we may be thinking?? LOL

Obstacles that I see for a woman? NONE, same obstacles as all of us when we began, orientation training is key. Keep her on the sim, the more stick time the better.

What stops the others from flying?? Lack of interest.

I guess Mensturation is the obstacle.
Hirobo manual asks girls not to fly when M is come. It has been discussed in RR years ago.

Why more of us don't fly?

My guess as to why more of us women don't fly is that it's comments like that. Menstruation? I can't even think why a man would even think that makes a difference. I fly. I'm a woman. I have the same trouble as the rest of you and no more...except for dealing with idiots in the flying world.

You got one thing wrong Jennifer...

we have to deal with the idiots too all you have to do is look on RR a bit to see em' fighting...so it is not only a woman thing.. it is just a stupid thing... as Forrest said.. Stupid is as Stupid does.

Keep them rotors spinnin' Jennifer..

That's true of course. Every group has it's people who are inconsiderate, unthinking and just don't get it when dealing with other people.

I get to deal with another layer on top of that which is men. Not all men of course. Some are really nice. They like seeing a woman in the sport and do everything they can to help. others make really weird comments like the "menstruation" post.

Me and another woman went to a hobby shop the other day to get new blades for a heli. After discussing the merits of one blade type over another with the guy at the counter he suddenly asks if we're going to be the ones flying the plane. He seemed so surprised and even amused. Okay, we deal with that sort of thing all the time but when we came back later to pick up a part another shop didn't have he said "you guys had me wondering". We're thinking wondering what? If we're gay? (we're not). If we might actually dare to try and fly a helicopter? Or was he wondering if we were just in the wrong place.

Another thing that stops women is the fact that it is a hobby populated by mostly men already. Few women want to join an all male flying club and feel like the odd "man" out. Even going to a fun fly we get a look from the guys like 'Where's your husband? Did he take another car?'

I'm not really putting most of the guys down. Women would probably act the same way if a man came along for a shopping trip with the girls or a day spa outing. It's just why it can be hard to get women flying. We just need a lot more encouragement to join in because of the way things are.

Hey come on,

I also think that another reason why ladies dont join or are possibly put off is the fact that our sense of humours are so different ( in most cases ) I think the menstruation comment was only put there for the male audience sense of humour i.e. its what us blokes joke about when we are on our own etc etc. and I certainly dont think it was meant to be harmful towards ladies or warrants being calssed as a stupid comment and the rest.

I just think it was meant as a fun throw away comment thats all. So please relax, enjoy the hobby if you wish to and for goodness sake please just make sure its the right time of the month !!!!!!! ( just kidding )

Enjoy.

Yeah right, I think you know why this hobby doesn't appeal to women. Why don't you enlighten us by actually saying it.

Up Here in Canada there are at least 3 of us women pilots. And were hoping to grow next year. I know that 1 more is interested in the hobby, her husband is building her chopper. So she will be starting next season.

How long has most female pilots out there been in the hobby.

The 2 of us at our field have been in it for 5+ years. It's a family sport for us. We fly with our husbands. Though this year I think we started to dominate the airtime some days......

I encourage all females to get of the side lines and join you will enjoy go out to the field much more then.

Go girl,

Your find the odd pig out there but most of the guys are ok....
Just remember they are compensating for something..............

I find that once you kick their ass off the field once then they respect you more and give you the airtime you deserve.

98% of the guys out there are great and are happy to help a woman pilot. I found through my learning that the most attitude I had to deal with was the wives that would give the attitude of "who do you think you are cutting into my husbands flying time". I just shrugged them off as OLD BAGS and cut into their husbands flying time even more.

My girlfriend once gave me a pin that suited me well, it said
" YOU CALL ME A BITCH LIKE ITS A BAD THING...."

have fun flying.

Why is that you girls seem to think its ok to talk all aggressive as in " kick their ass off the field " etc etc. If us guys acted like that then we would be classed as " pigs " in your eyes or even worse. It never fails to amaze me as to why you girls seem to think its ok for you to act like that but totally disgusting and vile if we do it ?
I guess to act like that you girls must also be " trying to compensate for something "
To sum it up please please please lost the attitude and we can all fly together in harmony without anybody having to kick anybodys ass !

I actually found Heliwoman's ass kicking comment funny. My wife wouldn't care about having my flying time cut into. In fact she doesn't care about helis at all until it costs money! She's better with our finances and I DON'T mean shopping trips!

I can't be compensating for much because I only have a Raptor 30

Whilst I obviously like flying my heli, I do like watching helis fly too.... erm I mean that I like watching them without having to concentrate

I'm pretty sure it doesn't help the male stereotype that even in here in RunRyder all the women still have the the title Heliman.

And please lets not have some politically correct rubbish like heliperson. (Hate that) It should be heliman and heliwoman. Never understood why we have to be forced to pretend there is no difference between men and women. There is and it's a good thing.

Keep flyin and don't put up with any crap from stupid people.

I don't think I will ever get to get my wife to fly. Everytime we have a fight, she would threatened to throw out my planes and helis.

Well its always good to get some fresh air......

I'm from Hong Kong too (well partly UK as well), but I'm not a girl (thank you very much!) but to be honest with you, I haven't seen a girl fly a heli, both in HK & UK, or anywhere near a heli.
