Main Discussion > I'm so fed up with plankers saying they don't like how heli pilots are flying!

We had a club fun fly not long ago. We had a guest pilot from Odessa that was here for a few months because of his work. He is a very good 3D heli pilot. You know, the kind of guy that likes it "on the deck" but in control. He is not a "stick banger" but very smooth and graceful. Anyway we learned alot from him. Then we had a club fun fly and he was invited to come. Once he got in the air, many of the planker flyers were stunned at this kind of flying!
As club president, I was approached by a few members about his flying.
"Isn't that a little dangerous?"
"He's flying too close!"
"Are you going to do anything about it?"
My answer to them was, "He's flying within the AMA rules, the club rules, and he is not flying recklessly."
"But what if it get's out of control?" they asked.
"It is the same as any other aircraft. Should I cite how many airplanes have gone out of control and would up in the pits, or smashed into the runway?" I said.
Some of them promptly left, and some stuck around. I have tried to get us all together as a club, to fly together. Now I'm tired.
As the club has evolved since alot of us are flying helis now,(at least half of the members), the plank only flyers come out during the week, and us heli guys get to fly during the week end. Some of us members are comfortable enough to fly in the same airspace. Others are not.
As a club, we enforce the rules as far as safety, beginners, liscense, frequency and good sportsmanship. If someone is not comfortable in the same airspace with a heli, we let them have the sky to themselves for their flight, if they are fueled and ready to go.
I don't think it is right to isolate ANY pilot that is a member of ANY club to ANY specific airspace or area, unless the airfield is designed for the two separate craft.

Where's that EASY button?

I've been blamed for everything and this is supposedly because the asshats don't like helis. We have a club grill but it seemed like the clique grill. If you are outside the clique then you can't use it. I didn't know this at the time. So I went out on a fathers day weekend and grilled hotdogs and gave them out to everyone at the field. I couldn't make the next club meeting the following Thursday. One of the club officers who I have actually never seen fly got up and said "someone, and you all know who it is, ran the club grill out of propane last weekend". We had no rules for dealing with the grill in that regard and as far as I knew it had propane in it. I confronted the guy the next week and asked if he told the club that I ran the grill out of propane and he claimed he didn't remember anything about that. So basically there are idiots and some of those idiots join flying clubs and a few of them even fly while most join just to bitch at board meetings. It took me awhile to believe that but I have seen enough that I know it to be gospel. And they really get on the high horse if they get on the board despite their only qualification being they took a position that nobody wanted. That’s a whole other story.

I know where you coming from havoc, you should of told him that everyone got fed on that propane. And if he wanted to pass the hat around to all the guilty hot dog munchers then its ok with you And you will make it a point next time not to feed so many hungry pilots so he won't bitch about using up all the propane Talk about petty

Didn't you guys know there's diffrent rules for helicopters and plankers I have seen guys bitch because they didn't have anything else better to do.

A little dangerous? who said helicopters or airplanes wasn't dangerous

If he's flying to close, I know your really concerned but if he gets wacked by his helicopter its gonna hurt

Are you going to do anything about it, well seems like he's doing a good job so far. But I will make sure I stay far enough as not to get hurt

But what if it gets out of control? Thats why you should always be alert when someone is flying in your area and make sure you know where his model is at all times. So you won't look like a landing zone

I'm sure there's a ton more you guys can think of, I just answered a few Jimmi

This is the same reason I don't fly at one of the fields in Pittsburgh. It's in a state park so anyone with a AMA card can fly, but I the old plankers just make it so you don't want to fly there. I used to go out and fly every once and a while just to piss them off.

What are you, 10 years old? Challenging someone to a fight because they don'( like how you fly a toy helicopter is ridiculous.

It's not ridiculous. That's why I drink out of glass bottles. You never know when you need to break one over the picnic table and charge at one of the old timers. They may look feeble, bent over, and relying on a cane to walk but plankers are deceptive like Yoda. Those codgers can fight.

You may have apoint Eury, but sometimes when you're dealing with a caveman, the only thing they understand is caveman language.

This is exactly why i dont fly at an AMA field. My first experience with an AMA club went like this. I show up and the gates are locked and I see a few old guys sitting around and flying to their hearts content. I yell, I honk... nothing, they just sit there. I know they heard me because they looked over and just kept on doing what they were doing.

Who wants to fly with a bunch of pricks?

I wonder if the planker is the problem or if you guys are just retards. From many of the posts here, I'm leaning towards retards.

Once, quite a while ago, at an AMA field, not mentioning any names here. I was flying my heli and I was just practicing figure eights. Nice and easy, nothing fast. Well, I was standing at one end of our runway far enough away from everyone else, who was not flying, only watching. When I would fly down towards the club house I would make my turn around. Now I was out over and beyond the runway, so no safety issues at all. A planker actually walked up to me and said, would you mind not turning when your out in front of the club house because when that thing points toward us it makes us nervous. First of all, I was concentrating on my flight and he should have waited until I was done. Secondly, at one point or another when you turn, you will be pointing the nose of that heli at the club house. Now why in the world would he even say such a thing. Of course if I had been flying "this" side of the run way that would maybe be different...but I was at a very safe distance and I was just making "U" turns at the end of a figure 8. This came from a guy who crashed a big plane into a vehicle too???

I later found out he tried flying a heli a couple of times, but he would not bring it to the field in front of anyone and ended up selling it. And thats fine, but don't try to ruin it for someone else just because you gave up or couldnt/didnt get it.

It does seem that there is some animosity on the side of some plank only pilots, and it is open to any age group. I have yet to hear any heli pilot complaining about planks though...why is that? On the bright side, we have quite a few heli pilots at my current field, and there does not seem to be any issues between plankers and helis. Myself, I fly both.

I do know that our field has a heli hover area, and if you want to fly from the runway, they ask that you enter the flight path. Some of the plank guys dont even do that since they will hover around over the runway. But no big deal. I follow the rules and worry about myself and I seem to get along ok.

So I guess my advice would be, fly safe, and dont worry about the next guy, just have fun. If it gets to be too much of a problem, get some fellow members together that share your feelings and go to the club meeting and try to sort it out there first. Save the bottle breaking brawl for TV land, becuase there is enough violence in the world as it is. Besides, if the guy is an A hole now, after you beat his butt, he will still be an A hole, just find comfort knowing he is leading a miserable life, and you will have the last laugh.
