Just wondering how hard/expensive it is to get carbon replacement frames made up?
I know thats pretty general, but is it likely to be cheaper than going OEM for replacement chassis parts?
Its for a stacked frame Gas heli.
Currrently the chassis is G10, 2 upper sides, 2 lower.
Replacement costs are around $120 per side.
The price stinks lol.
Im not looking to have it done anytime soon, just wondering aloud so that I have some idea in the future.
Cheers

I got into CNC to support making custom parts for my heli hobby and now the cnc hobby has overtaken my interest in helis. There are a lot of people with cnc routers now who can do what you are asking for. If you can provide a clean CAD file, a part can be made in minutes. To copy frames (which I have done) can take hours of reverse engineering design work. This will cost more than the parts themselves.

Most manufacturers have pretty reasonable prices, given the time and testing required to bring parts to market. If all you want is stock replacement parts then your best bet is to go with original replacements.

Another problem may be getting material of good quality to cut in the first place.
Mine comes from Germany.

Homebrewed version of this can be built for about $200.00

Make all the frames you want. No CNC Necessary.

Enjoy,

God I hope my Wife does not ask "Whats in the Box"

Looking at the machine and how it works, I don't think that this type of machine would work well in making frames. I don't think that the regidity is there for accuracy. I could be wrong, I have never seen this type of manually operated copy router before. Nevertheless, pretty cool.

I totally forgot- I came up with a way to copy frames with very little technology required. If you scroll down in my gallery you will see a Century Hawk I used to own. It's hard to see in the pics, but the frame was an exact copy of the aluminum originals in g10 fiberglass. I mounted my dremel tool in the quill of my milling machine- you could use a drill press or Dremel's #231 shaper table. Then use a Dremel #9904 carbide bit. Bolt your old frames to a sheet of the new material with some flat head 3mm screws. Then set your tool bit height so that the undercut part of the bit rides against the old frame and the cutting part rides against the new material. Then simply use the old frame as a template and cut a perfect frame.

The silver helicopter parts in my gallery were made this way before I had cnc. I designed and manually machined the parts templates in inexpensive G10 and then routed the final parts out with the procedure I described above.
