Align T-REX 600N 700N > Flying without the engine fan cover

Just received my Nitro Pro recently after I bought it practically new from TREXpup here on Runryder. I've read stuff on the forum and when I pulled the motor and engine fan cover/shroud down to inspect the clutch, I saw there was wear on the fan cover from the fan scraping it. What irks me is the fact that self tapping screws are used on plastic hex supports to anchor this fan cover - removal once or twice with likely strip it. I've been looking at the Gforce fan and was thinking about purchasing it. Has anyone tried flying theirs without the fan cover? I have a Raptor 90 SE and it doesn't have a fan cover/shroud that directs air flow to the head and it cools fine. Also it would help show off that nice aluminum Gforce fan if we didn't use the fan cover. Thoughts anyone?

I appreciate your input but is this based on experience/experimentation or just your opinion?

If your Raptor 90 is like the plastic framed Raptor 50, then the "fan shroud" is built into the plastic frame, and that is why you don't need a separate one.

My G-10 framed Hurrican 50 also has a separate fan shroud like the Trex.

You can't fly it without the shroud. Try it and you'll overheat most likely.

.50 Heli models with separate fan shroud are an exceptions, just like the Trex 600N, I have no experience or experimentation not using fan shrouds but, I can assure your engine does not live for more than a couple of tanks, simply the air moved by the fan are insuficient to keep the engine head warm, the canopy keeps the fresh air out of main frame too and in normal operation and with a taste lean engine you can rise and overheat the temp of engine so high you can zeise the connecting rod, seize the piston sleeve and maybe break the piston. Please let us informed how do you plan to loose those $200 bucks.

I fly a caliber 5 with stock plastic fan and I sand the fins after a few tanks just to assure nothing rubs. Or try one of the 3DX beauty metal fans.

The fan shroud is moveable and can be tweaked until it does not rub... I take the glowplug out, so I can spin the engine easily and spin it while I am tightening the shroud... I move the shroud around until it does not rub.... After you get it there, it works fine, especially with the cnc fan that does not flex.... why take the chance of overheating just to show off a silver fan???

But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....

Hi

You could always night fly with out the fan cover, no need for lights on the heli as I am sure the engine will be glowing enough to light up everything:-)

You really do need that cover.

Cheers

I once doubted the efficiency of the fan/shroud on my Concept 30DX , so I removed it . I managed a hover of about 30 seconds before the engine faded due to overheating .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

My $1200 MA stratus has a fan shround that uses plastic to secure the fan shroud in a similar fashion to the 600N. Actually, they use machine bolts and not even the self-tapping screws which can strip even easier. The easy solution is not to overtighten the screws. Sorry if that's not the answer you wanted to hear.

You can get the metal inserts instead of the plastic hex inserts tho and use m3 capbolts

i flew all day without the fan shroud and the engine was cool and did not lean! the gforce fan does the job and it was a hot day
its really nice to have the shroud removed since it helps a lot to adjust the gv1
