Hey Tritan. I will try to answer all your questions.

Stalls were with no flaprons. I built this plane for a friend of mine. I didn't configure the flaprons for him, but I used 2 servos for ailerons to give him the option if he wanted too.

Yes, the engine I am using sounds a lot like a real super cub engine. Right now its top secret.

I don't have that plane anymore, but I will try to drum up some pics from my archives somewhere of my landing gear config. I am die hard tri gear. I started out with a tail dragger, and quickly got tired of the plane flopping over on its back ever time I landed. End of problem.

Here is a pic of the airframe of the plane in the video. This was before I put the Askman mount on it.

Hey looking good Juan.

Kev that video is great, I fell asleep watching it fly Com'on you slowed that vid down didnt you...

Hey Kev I have been looking at an askman mount but it doesnt seem like he is getting to his clients at the mo. Do you have his web address. Maybe a photo or 2 as I want to start at least sorting out how I'm going to mount it on my plane and what I might need to change there. Thats if I'm gonna be able to get one

Received a package in the mail today. Can you identify this aircraft?

Mentioned above is CactusJackSlade of RCG's Depron Dragon, This is his original SS Dragon that is also shown in Greg McNair's Aerial Photography Book. I'm now officially a SlowStick Member.

The wings are connected very simply. Carbon tubes on the inner part and a carbon rod on the outer part that just slide in the tubes. Tape holds them on. I will be ordering another SS kit to make a straight inner section of wing. The sailplane wing w/ailerons that I just built will also strap on.

Original build thread, and the First Flight Thread. The build thread has the details of the carbon tubes with kevlar thread wrap and why it's done that way.

I'm working on a slowstick "ball" enclosure. I have a simple idea for rotation and tilt could later be added. This could work with a large "O" ring, 4 or more rubberbands and a styrofoam ball. Review the photos and continue below.

In the photo's above it is simply hooked to show the concept. I could form a cup that can rotate, it could have little hooks for the attachment which in this case is rubber bands. There would be foam cushions inside the cup to help with vibration dampening. The rubber bands would also function the same. Having a ball that could attach like this would allow for the camera to be pointed in any direction without changing airflow. The "O" ring and rubber bands would allow the camera to be installed at any angle including straight down.

As a back up, I have a 2 oz 4' military parachute (good for 2 lbs.) that I could install between the cup and ball. If for some reason the rubber bands broke loose the parachute would open saving the camera and downlink. Of course it would take some skill to land the plane with CG off as my design is front mounted.

Another benefit would be in case of a crash, the camera would break away, the styrofoam would hopefully save the camera from damage. If nothing else, it would float.

I have a Canon A640 with the CHDK intervolameter hack (interval shutter). The camera and downlink would fit on their own inside the ball with a power battery. No servos or wires would be attached in any form.

BTW, the ball mount if used this very way would cost... $5

Comments/Suggestions?

Anyone not actively participating in this thread, I'd like to hear your comments too. I want this working in 2 days.

Very nice Troy. How are you planning to rotate the ball?

Her's a VERY interesting thread on slow stiks:

The ball will connect to a cup (that will keep the ball in place). The cup will be on bearings for rotation, rod through slowstick shaft. Have a small disk on top of the cup with a rubber roller on a 360 modified servo. The rubber roller will be x2 in a pinch setup on each side of the disk. Rotate disk = rotate ball, disk can be different sizes for different gear ratios. Here or Here!

It will not rotate for a week or so, I want this flying this weekend. I've got to figure out how to mount the 450 watt brushless yet, kind of big, kind of heavy... But its all I have.

I read in one of the slowstick threads that the open bottom wing creates allot of drag, and the closed bottom wing provides penetration into wind. Someone closed off the bottom so it was more of a normal wing, I'm going to see what I can find for depron locally and attempt it in a few weeks.

That video is awesome. I don't know what kind of brushless that guy is using but it sure does sound like its got a LOT of power. Burn rubber...

Troy, looks like another "magic" ball! like you're parachute idea, kinda like when my little girl was in jr. high and had to drop an egg out the second floor window without it breaking. uh, no, it didn't.

Got the camera to fit the small 6" ball. Tomorrow I'll paint it with latex, then cover it with a thin layer of fiberglass. It was cut with a saw, and carved with a knife.

Lookin good Troy. Hey guys, on drag (not the queen type) does it make sense that on our AP machines some extra drag is good for slower flight? If you clean up an airframe, it moves faster. Good for eficiency, but a sleek airframe moves faster, correct? Just like in flying full scale retractable gear planes. Once you drop the gear, it's like putting on the brakes.

A clean airframe doesnt necessary means faster flight. You could use this claener, more efficient airframe to use less less power to push it through the air for a slow flight.

I agree with Tritan, a 2 meter powered sailplane loaded will actually land slower than a loaded slowstick and have less power consumption.

The SS Dragon will be tested with both the modified stock wing, and a two meter sailplane wing. A closed bottom wing will also cut through wind better.

OK guys, I have to say I am pretty STOKED. Winter is here. It snowed a few inches yesterday which means I slow WAY down with my AP business. So off to the R&D lab I go to start working on video again. I did some MAJOR mods to the Aurora, and tested my simple POS camera today for the first time. Again I have to mention my disclaimer. This is not professional video. There is nothing IN THE VIDEO that is special. This was a test to see the stability of my plane ONLY. The point of this test and the next few to come are only to show the stability of the plane. There is NO STABILIZATION on the camera mount itself. With all that being said this is by far the most stable video I have taken yet from this plane. Go here and scroll down to "New video test". Oh yeah, this was also with a 10 mph wind. Its only 10 meg or so.

EDIT: I deleted " New Video Test" and replaced it with my "First FPV Test". I went out again after the paragraph above and flew my first FPV mission. I am getting pretty exited with my progress. I have NEVER flown FPV before and I lost the plane a couple times, but I kept my cool, I just kept looking into my ground station and flew towards me until I could here the enging. Man THAT was freaky! But a blast! Anyway, the video turned out fantastic for my first time. Not bad for a SS huh?

Oh wow Kevin, that is so very exciting. Eventually that is the point I would like to get to, is shooting video FPV with a SS, that is my goal with the SS.

Man o Man! I cannot tell you the memories that come back to me when I see that video and that scenery with the snow on the ground. I can hear the snowmobiles all ready .

Thanks for the encouragement!

Nice progress Kevin. Keep in mind that I'm just a hobby guy so don't take offence to this question: Videos are cool and all but what would a paying customer want with one?

Also Kevin did you get my email about the website?

Iowa could use a couple of your mountains (then we'd have two) and we'd take that $1600 check each year the state gives but Dude ...8 months of winter, snow on the ground now!

Hey Denny and Robby, you guys might be suprised to know that the winters are one of the many things that I moved here for. I absolutley LOVE the snow. My kids and I are hard core snowmachiners. We don't do rain dances up here, we get PLENTY of rain. Oh no, we do SNOW dances up here! When spring does finally roll around up here we go into mourning because we can't snowmachine any more. Until you have seen the back country of Alaska by snowmachine, well, it's a religous experience to say the least. If you have some of these, life in Alaska is just magical.

Robby, I have a couple potential clients that are waiting for me to get quality video from my SS's. One of them right now is using real fixed wing. They are shooting THROUGH the plane window and almost none of the video is usable. Also, to say it is hard to get quality stable video from a SS would be a grand understatment. It has become an obsession for me, and yes there is a market for it. Unfortunatly, I don't have unlimited rescources to put into R&D on it. But still, I am making great progress in getting good usable video from my planes.

I couldn't aggree more Kevin, there is definately use for video from a SS right here where I work, and that is working on a 1400 acre development with the South Canadian river as its North border and my bossman wants some video of flying down the river, which is very hard to do for long distance with a helicopter. It needs to be done with a SS flying it in FPV.

Oh Kevin you make me so jealous with that picture man. Its funny I tell people the same thing, they say you lived in a Alaska, what about those cold winters buuurrrrr! And I say the winters is what I absolutely loved about Alaska. I remember every year my dad would pile us 4 kids into some kind of sled wagon and he would attach it to his snowmobile and we would ride for miles and miles to a cabin off of some lake and we would spend the whole weekend there. Don't remember much about it other than that, and that the bathrooms where real outhouses. There wasn't much getting up in the middle of the night to go pee . Oh and I do remember us coming across a bear once, and I remember saying to myself, its much smaller than I would have thought. Yea right until they stand up on their hind legs . We all had our own snowmobiles except for me and my twin brother we had to share a little kitty kat and we used to beg our older brother to take his machine out and cut us some trails to be able to ride around the house. Oh man the good ole days! Anyway enough reminacing (doubt if I spelled that right). My dad still goes there every other year, just to do a snowmobile trip with his buddies that still live there.

Thanks for the pic!
Denny
