Here's my SS... I hope you don't mind. Askman landing gear, motor mount and self leveling camera mount.

Here is a pic of a Magpie

I like the Magpie but I have a lot of down thrust and it still pitches up on motor on. It almost looks funny. The motor is now mounted on the firewall not the stick mount. The SS is hard to beat but I'm rough on my planes and you have to be careful with the SS. The Magpie wing fits on the SS as well.

Don't mind at all Cainebean, feel free to jump in any and all. I actually saw your pics over on AP Landing. Wow dude, yours is way more elaborate than mine! I also tries you "above the Wing" engine mount too. I didn't like the way it handled so I changed it back. I missed the lack of lift my engine provided under the wings. I was hoping I would like it as I would like to point my camera forward. But I will stick with what I have for now.

Motor

You have to put some down thrust on the raised motor mounts and they will fly just like a normal setup. The part I like about my setup is you can shoot out any direction. Just unscrew 2 screws and turn the setup.

Ha - in photo DSC00354-1-9873.jpg it looks like a Fieseler Storch with those long legs you've got - stick those iron crosses back on! The slow stick was the plane that got me into this whole AP thing.

Do suppose I could use the electrnics/3s battery and align 430L motor from my t-rex 450 on the SS?

I'm not to familiar with that heli, but at the top of this thread I list what I used in mine. Go to any website that carries the motor and the batteries and see if the specs are similar to yours.

Here is another of my SS just prior to a photo job using the std wing...

EDIT: Notice where the servos are mounted. Leaves the CG area clear for cameras and such..

Well Just go get a SS. Build it, and there are plenty of people who will help you with the rest.

Burnt,

Can you show us a pic of your aileron setup? I tried to do it and I ended up with a warping, wobbly wing. The wing flexed so much that I hardly had any roll rate at all.

Also,
With my brushless setup (a park 370 inrunner and the stock prop) I was able to haul a one-pound camera into the air. It had a scale-like lumbering takeoff from the ground. And it was a real handfull in the air. But it was ridiculous fun.

Hey Marked23,
I know what you are saying about the wing flex. I found an EASY CHEAP way to remedey this problem. When I get a chance today, I will post a pic and explain what I did. Hang tight.

OK Boys,
Heres my recipe for Ailerons on a SS. I have TONS of misc. parts laying around. I didn't spend ONE DIME to do this. I already had everything. There may be a way more scientific way to do this, but this works killer for me. Feel free to take this and improve. OK, here we go.
First, build the SS wing as per instructions. Then if you have some packing tape, if you don't go to any supply store and get some, I think its $3.00. This is what you will use to add the strength to your wing. Why packing tape you ask? Well, take a strip 3 ft long and pull on it with all your might and I dare say the governor of California himself couldn't pull it apart its so strong. Also, its LIGHT as in no weight. If you look at the picture of my wing you can see that I have a strip of this running the full width of the wing at the front and the back. Wait theres more! When you apply this tape its critical that you follow the next steps very carefully. I'll explain later. OK, moving right along. Take your wing, turn it bottom side up so you are looking at the bottom of the wing. Take a razor knife or xacto whatever just something very sharp and get ready to cut. Look at my wing. The vertical lip that runs the length of the wing from front to back has been notched out. Go ahead and take out several inches of this kinda using my picture as a guide. OK, once that is done we are to the most critical part of this sweet aileron install. Grab your packing tape. Start it at one end of the wing at the very front. THEN using your lap as a brace PUSH DOWN on the wing at the center so that your wing looks almost level. Why? because after your tape has been applied to the entire lentgh of the wing, your wing will spring back tightening against the tape. Repeat the above process applying a strip of tape to the very back of the wing. If all is done properly you should then be able to take your wing and flex it up simulating stress on the wing and it should be rock solid as in very little wing flex. My Wing is amazingly strong. This is important to get right as if there is to much flex it will move your ailrons with no stick input from your TX. OK so everyone understand that?
Now looking at the pictures you can see the rest is pretty much self explanitory. I simply took some ABS plastic and made platforms for my control horns, and epoxied them on. Same with my Servo platform. One footnote here. Forget using a micro servo for your ailerons. They simply don't have the torque or proper throw to puch your ailerons. I used a full size futaba s3151 servo and it works great. Now at this point I need to say, that I fly in some rediculous winds with this thing. I can see it bobbing around like a leaf in the wind and I can tell you gang, no matter what, wether on take off, landing or just flying around I have NO WING FLEX... NONE! Use your best judgment but whe you get done you will know if its right just by flexing your wing up by hand. It will be MUCH stronger than the wing without the tape. Good luck!

I started in heli's, but I've been messing around with fixed wing lately. Learning the ins/outs of this type of flight. I'm currently just flying to gain confidence and skill before working on any vid applications.

Here's the ugliest AP plane ever. It's all Home Depot except the wing and electronics. It's pretty indestructable. And if you do break something, it's cheap to fix.

It's skunk works, so it's not set up for AP yet, but it sure flies nice. I have the FMA copilot on and will be building a new fuse for a bigger wing and camara gimble.

Hey Trackhead, nice ground up build. Whats the wingspan of your bird and how much does it weigh RTF?

63" wingspan, soon to be 96" on a different fuse.

AUW with 4s TP4200mah is right about 4 pounds. The 4200 lipo is total overkill, but with a smaller lipo, and the intended payload, it will handle it fine.

I'm not concerned with slow flight, so a slightly faster wing is ok with me. As it is now, it's off the ground in about 15-25 feet.

The pucker factor flying this over the heli makes things quite a bit nicer. And I'm after LONG fly in shots, longer than what I am comfortable doing with my heli with AP2k. This will be part of the quiver.

This current configuration is more for learning right now. The 96" wing on a better fuse will be the dedicated rig, when the time and skills are adequate.

Very cool. Get ready for the vibration battle when it comes time to strap on your camera. It amazing how much vibration a little electric motor can generate.
I weighed my slowstick this morning. 33 ounces. Last night I was flying it over heavey traffic trying to grab some pics of a mall thats being demolished. To get the whole thing in the frame, I was about 400 yards out. Trust me when I say I would NEVER attempt that with my heli. I just float around up there for 10 minutes or so then float er in for a landing. The stress level compared to my heli is non existent. I even had a chat with a Local policeman last night. He watched me then came over. Showed him my set up and we taklked about possible survellience for drug enforcement or domestic violence. He was very nice and told me to carry on. If a cop had shown up when I was flying my heli, not so sure the response would have been so positive due to the noise and elevated risk factor. Anyway, I'm loving my slowstick so far.

Not worried at all about vibes. My Trex600 front mount is completely vibration free, and I will incorporate the same principles of vibe isolation in the plank. Or just turn off the motor............

I do a lot of low level still shots with my SS. so I have to keep the motor running at a real low rpm. I got some vibration isolators from Mcmasters that have helped a ton. I'm also think seriously about throwing an Askman mount on it too.
