Whoa Woa Whoa!! Holy crap, I'm getting bombarded with PM's and emails regarding my last post. I cannot answer them all as they are all asking me the same thing and that is. "What plane are you using and how do I build it?" Rather that try to reply to all of them I will just answer all in this post. MAN, I am so glad I took the time to document the build of my Aurora. For all who want to build or see the plane I used for this shoot, go to this link. All parts used and the entire build is there. I also put a link to the video showing this plane doing some takoffs and landings at the bottom of the page.

Denny, (ministock22)All you will ever need to know about the Slow Stick big (Aurora) and small are in this thread and on my website on the build page I just posted. I and the others here that have taken this route for AP will help you with any questions or problems you might have. I order all my SS from Tower Hobbies. I get the Park flyer version which was $21.00 last time I ordered some a few months ago. Order 4 or 5 so you have plenty of extra parts. Order them and get started!
Another question people are asking me. Will this plane carry a DSLR camera. Yes, without any heavey lenses. I used a Sony DSC-T9 (5.5 ounces) for the photo above. As soon as I can afford it I will be putting a Canon G9 on it and this plane will carry it with no problems. Let me see, I know I'm forgetting something but I will post again later if I need to.

OK gang I have another news flash for you. Have you guys ever driven by something and said to yourself "Geez, if I wasn't so worried about crashing my heli I would stop and do some aerials of that event or property". Well, for the last couple years that hasn't been a problem for me as I switched to a SS for myt aerials. So check this out. If you go back a few post in this thread you will see a picture of an HUGE auction that took place a week ago Staurday. I told the wife, "Lets go do a shoot on that auction while its going on". So we did. Now I think its important to say here that NO ONE hired me. I was doing this on my own! So the wife and I go to the auction and set up across the street. I take off and do a few circles around the entire thing, land my baby and go home. Now not only did no one see me, the people on the ground had no clue that I was even in the air. So now let me tell you the really cool part. First, one of the pictures ran in the local news paper the next day in the Sunday edition. Great Exposure. But wait it gets better. The following Monday I email the auction owner a small picture I took with my business name watermarked on it. This morning my phone rings and its the auction owner wanting to buy some aerials from me I kid you not! I go over and meet him, taking my laptop with me with the best photos on it. I spent about ten minutes with the guy, he picked out he faves and I left $250.00 richer. Whats the point? It's just this. I am NOT AFRAID to stop and take aerials of something that I think might make me money, even if I have not been hired! Wether its the Small SS or my Aurora, gang there is NO FEAR and I fly at will whenever I want to. I could NEVER do that with my heli. I don't worry about noise, vibration, fumes, fuel, crashing and injuring someone, or doing hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of damage to my heli. Man I just don't think it gets any easier!

O yeah! I KNEW I was forgetting something that someone had asked me. This post is for my brotha Tonic. He was asking me how far away was my farthest point away from myself I was on that shoot. This picture give a pretty good idea. In this picture all I knew was that I was in a long wide left turn. I drew another line to show where the wife and I were standing. This picture was taken from the south of the property, just the oppisite of the last one I posted

Hey Flap, If you ever flew a Slow Stick my brotha, you would wonder what the heck you were were worried about. The plane practically flys itself. Another way to put it is, if you can fly a heli, you won't have any problem with a Slow Stick TRUST ME!!

OK guys, here are some pics. Now this plane is the standard SS size so it will not carry a DSLR or Video camera. It wasnt designed for that but works like a dream for what it was designed. It is an evolution in progress with AP in mind. It was never intended to make the best looking plane just what is needed to make AP professional, easy to launch and land, practical, handle wind and other flying conditions.


Here you can see the no dihedral, skids, pod


See the skids are very far fwd. I've even tested landings at almost full speed


Flaps down with ailerons up for crow braking and a mix with throttle that keeps the prop wind milling for extra braking


Close up of laser cut motor mount, held together with pipe spacers and brass rivets, much lighter than bolts


Note 2 cameras in pod, mini cam for flying FPV and doubler on skids at front


Correx pod and video TX


Model memory written on rudder


pod open and its easy to get to camera controls


CF wing frame for flex and torsion strength


New camera pod


Mini cam and servo mount. Glued to camera with silicon


I'm still not sure how to cut foam neatly, anyway this is just a test but it seems to be the best way I found to cut foam into a ball with accurate cut outs for cameras. Basically thin foam pieces and drawn on auto cad, the outer circle with inner cut outs were printed on paper and stapled to the foam and cut with sissors. Join all the pieces after with dots of contact adhesive.


Just a test but still the camera fits nicely inside


Nowhere near finished, the pod will be supported from the back ball half from the top

So true! I FINALLY got mine out this weekend for some fun. Man, this thing is a blast! No ailerons yet, but loops, spirals, no problem. Hey Kevo, I'm coming up at the end of the month. Hope to see you then.

OK Tip, time to get a camera on that thing! You will wonder why you took so long to do it. Make sure you put ailerons on it first though!

The best way to cut foam is cut it big and sand it to size. If you have an extra dome you can use double sided tape to hold very coarse strips of sandpaper on the inside. Just by spinning it by hand it will make a good fit. I would start with much thicker blocks of foam carve it roughly into a sphere and then sand it to perfection. A very thin bread cutting knife works well on foam (must be sharp).

Thanx ace, I have tried very similar things but it took way longer with inconsistant results but I will have a look into your idea. The big problem is also the complex cutouts for the camera. The thin slivers just makes it fast, accurate and practical.

Yep, the camera will probably go on there soon. Got to put some better landing gear and ailerons first. Looking forward to adding the plane cam to the arsenal. Guys, don't do what I did...buy a kit and let it sit on the shelf for a year. Buy it and fly it!!!!

I like the protective ball. Great idea. I wish I could figure a way to provide similar protection for my Canon XT and XSI. After all, it's the only part of the bird I can't fix if bad things happen.

Tip, the sooner the better, you will love plane AP.

Flap I am puting it in foam for protection and hopefully it will help with vibration as well. My camera at the moment is supported by the camera mount thread but now the pod will be supported and the camera will be floating inside. I will also rather hang the camera pod from the top rather than how it is now by being supported from the bottom. Hopefully this will allow me to take images while the motor is running.

Thats great Jason, I was surprised to see someone else using foam in a ball. I used that method for my quick mast setup built last winter.

I'm currently adapting another chunk of foam for a 6" ball on the nose of my plane. This method works well with the A640, an adaptor and a UV or Polarized lens but the wide angle lens caused the foam to compress to much with weight.

It's pretty much my winter setup to keep some warmth in the gear. Batteries and such have thier own compartments.

Glad to see it on a plane.

Thanks for that, that looks great. I dont have anything to cut foam but will buy tools if I need. Did you buy that foam round like that or did you cut that out. How did you do the cut outs? I have tried a sharp blad, hack saw, dremel, sand paper but dont find it to easy to cut out big blocks. How does yours get supported on the ball, just on the sides? Very nice looking
