OK gang, I have been busy the last week or so. I am done with my flat wing and and have done a few other cool mods to make my Big SS even better. I think I'm close to finished as far as the wings and frame goes. So not to repeat my self I'll just let you go to my build page and check it out yourselves. Just scroll to the bottom. Let me know if you have any questions.

Very cool Burnt. I was thinking that your older tail design look proportionally a little small. So did you cover the 1/8” balsa flaps with foam from wing stock?

I can’t say that I have interest in building an Aurora, but I sure like watching your progress. Hope you get some better weather so you can bring us some more video. I think you got a very smart and practical AP design there.

That does look awesome Burnt. The new elevator is a great addition to your plane. Great to hear you have some test flights. Flat wings feel strange in comparison but the more you fly it in work conditions the more I think you will prefer it. With your flaps being further back from your CG, compared to your old wing, is the reason it will pitch down more aggresively. Cant wait to see how your build continues.

OK, I had a good day today. My Askman mount got installed today which was a lot harder than it sounds. Trying to get the CG right was interesting but I got it perfect and went and flew it to make sure.I still have to connect a separate reciever to it so I can tilt and pan but I am begining to see a tiny light at the end of the tunnel. Its possible I will have some video OF and FROM the plane in a few days. I'll keep you all posted. Jason, I've been trying to hook up with you on Skype, no luck. I'll keep trying.

Hey Burnt sorry I have not been online much as I have been a bit hectic. I have checked from time to time but think we have missed one another. Unfortunatelly my PC is running so slow that I close all programs that I can to keep it ticking over. You doing pretty well with this plane, looking really good

Hay Burnt,

How’s the Big Stick doing? Was hopping we would be seeing some new stuff from you.

I've been getting braver with my slow stick all the time. Take it everywhere with me now. We're having some major flooding here in central Iowa and I got some great shots. Not as good as the news people with there manned helicopters but not bad. Have to be careful with all the stuff flying over head.

Hey Tonic, things are going fantastic. I am flying my Aurora on a daily basis now. It has really become a fantastic work horse. Heads up gang! FLAT WING! I let Jason (talkthetorqe) talk me into this. I HATED it at first but stuck with it on the assumption that he knew something I didn't. He is SPOT ON. Flat wing is just better all the way around. Anyway, I have several shoots scheduled. I have to do one for a B&B resort as soon as it stops raining. I will be using my Aurora for that. I am really excited to use it. This plane requires a camera man which has REALLY takes some getting use to, as I am so use to grabbing my small Stick and doing it all by myself. But it means less pics to look through at the end of the shoot, and way better bracketing. The entire shoot will be over water but no stress with the Aurora. One of the biggest lakes in Alaska. I have already been there and seen it (went out to do some computer work). I will be able to take off and land on the lawn. I will post some pics on my website when I have completed it.
I have been watching the flooding down there on the news. If you get some pics, we want to see them!! Post a few! How are the rest of you guys doing?

I have posted a short video clip from my Aurora on my website for those of you who haven't seen it yet. This was right after I put an AP 2000i on it. There is also a picture of my Aurora in its current configuration. A few nights ago, not sure why yet but my beloved Eflite Power 10 cooked on me right during a flight. No sweat, I was able to dead stick it to a perfect landing. I decided to try an experiment. I moved up to an Eflite Power 15. I also went to a larger prop, an APC 13x6 Park flyer. With 2 3s 2200 lipos in parallel, I went from 11 minute flight times to over 20 minutes with a full load. Needless to say, I am STOKED about that!Anyway, here you go.

Hey Gang, just a quick update on some stuff going on. I have been flying my Aurora just about every day and yesterday I got an opportunity to do a shoot on a huge auction that took place here in Wasilla. It was a whole lot of big boys toys as you can see from the picture. I was able to take off and stay up for about 20 minutes. Once I'm up to altitude I can bring the power back to 1/2 and can litteraly float around at will. It is amazing. Also, having a designated camera man is very cool. In this case it was my wife. She tells me where to fly the plane, when I get to where she wants me she snaps ONE PICTURE. Its off the hook. All I have to do is fly, and with this plane it simply couldn't be easier. Anyway, to put the frosting on the cake, I contacted the local News Paper and they ran the picture in todays Sunday Edition and right next to the picture they put my web address. It was really fun.

Hey guys

I have quite a few projects on the go at the moment. They all started at this thread and I've said it before and I will say it again "This SS is the best investment I have made in my business"

My business is 3 years 4 months old now and just before seeing this thread, which was about 8 months ago, I was really feeling the stress of killing someone if my gasser helicopter went out of control. Now I guess if you doing it as a hobby and you can choose where and if you want to fly then it is not so bad. But when this is what pays you bills at the end of each month you cant easily say no to work.

Ok at the mo there is a lot of excitment for me within my business. At long last I have this dream job without having the huge stress. I have a whole bunch of new projects that we are busy working with but its the little SS that I want to mention as it has evolved into my favourite AP ship. Today another break through was achieved!!

Ok it started after I read Burnt Offerings thread here. I was still sceptical as I knew this could not carry much of a camera and I would be going backwards in terms of camera specs. The pressure of flying my gasser in certain areas was so high that I decided I needed to give it a try. It took me awhile to find a SS but someone gave me a second hand one and Burnt sent me one of his own new ones until I could source others here in South Africa. Now there is no wrong way to set up any AP plane as long as it does the job for you but here is the journey of my SS and how it evolved to where it is now. I hope some get some help through reading this.

My 1st SS was standard configuration with a 480 motor up front and a side mounted camera under the wing. I fitted S75 e-flite servos all around (1 on each aileron stuck with double sided tape, 1 on elevator, 1 on rudder and 1 on shutter). I bought a Nikon P5100 and it has been such a nice camera I bought a second. I bought it because you have some manual control of it, not just auto and because the sensor chip was the biggest I could find for a 12MP point and shoot. Excelent reviews also helped From day one I knew it was going to be a lot less stressfull and on its maiden flight, with no camera on board I flew it for over an hour at about 1/8 throttle and as far as 500-600m away (My heli at 200m scares me). My next 2 tests were to find out how much weight it will carry and how much wind it could handle. For the weight test I simply added spanners with shipping tape 1 by 1 until I could see the plane was getting close to its limit then weighed the spanners. I think the weight was just over 400g. The wind was not as easy to test, it would take forever to get winds in increments of higher speed so I did the next best thing. I waited for winds of 40km/h and then went and launched my plane The weight really does help here, it was very rough but landed it safely. With the tests done it was time to get a camera on the plane and see how it could perform.

Here is my SS journey:
*Started as a side mounted cam, I didnt like shooting blind and a plane rolls in wind more than it pitches so I went to fwd mount!
*Started traing camera man to become a pilot (The idea is to make the SS a 1 man operation to take controlled photos)
*Designed a pusher SS with no dihedral and fwd cam. (Huge difference in wind)
*Fitted Video TX on plane and into cam to fly FPV
*Fitted mini cam as other cam display was going off when the shutter was pressed
*Made laser cut motor/tail boom mount for new pusher SS design
*Made a helmet with screen fitted to use for FPV (Lasted 1 flight and I chucked that idea)
*Made 2 Mobile ground stations that the TX radio can fit into for FPV. Light enough to easily walk around while you flying
*After months of wing flutter, trying diagonal tape across the wing, bigger spars, more spars, humping the wing more etc.. I designed and made a CF frame that gets taped to wing (Works as spars but also to improve torsion of wing and now no more flutter )
*Worked a full day on hand launching plane while holding ground station rather than taking off (Gives you many more options for places to fly)
*fitted flaps to make landings steeper and shorter
*improved the flaps by adding ailerons as crow brakes & windmilling prop for better landing brakes (Huge difference, as in go vert down pull & land instantly)
*Made a camera pod out of correx (like spad planes) to protect cam
*Wrote model memory numbers on rudders of planes for easy transmitter selection
*Made a 1 piece mount for shutter servo and mini cam that gets siliconed onto big cam. No more problems of cameras out of line or shutter not working properly
*Made wheels tighter on axles to slow plane after touch down
*Removed wheels and fitted 2mm wire skids (Way better for AP planes)
*Still busy with new vibration free camera ball mount
*Todays break though... Did our 1st, 2 pilot cross over... wow amazing. A client wanted a photo in a very busy area, a 4 lane Rd with no verge and just buildings. We told them we could not fly there but that we were testing a cross over system but would need some time to test it. They needed it urgently so we stoped all other work and ran some tests the day before and got cross over timing sorted. I took off at a school field and flew it to a point that we had decided, using 2 way radios and a bit of a flying rituals my radio was turned off and the 2nd pilots on. He flew to the building did the shoot and flew back to the point. We crossed over again and I came into land... awesome. I saw none of his flight, besides the cross over point, as there were buildings in the way. 7min can seem very long then

Sorry this wasnt supposed to be anywhere nearly this long There are many other things we tried but these are the important ones and the ones I can remember now..hehe. Dont have pics here but will post some time.

Thanks Burnt for a great thread and all your help. I've really got to go... lol.
Cheers
Jason

Very good read Jason, and thanks for posting. Sounds like a lot of fun right there. When you get a chance could you post some pics of your setup. I have talked with Burnt Offering a few times about the Slow Sticks, but I can't say that I completely understand what a Slow Stick is, and how they work. Burnt, sorry I have not gotten back with you, I still want to know more about the SS. I will shot you an e-mail this weekend so we can talk.

Jason thanks again for sharing your experiences!

Fun read Jason. You and burnt are the godfathers of Slow Stick AP, or took it to a new level anyway.

I'm still using the Burnt V1 version and have not found much need to improve on that design, as I'm strickly a hobby AP guy. I though about modifying to a flat wing design but ruled it out as I like to take her up very high and like knowing the SS is always in an upright orientation.

Thanks again for the update and look forward to any picture you may post.

I need to say something here. I have done some pretty cool things with a Slow Stick. But straight up, Jason is the one that has taken the SS to a level that is unprecidented. His Birds are engineering marvels and that is no exaggeration. Jason, its time to step into the spotlight buddy and post lots of pictures for us to see. I have seen several, but even since the last time you sent some through on Skype, you have done some killer mods. Lets see some Pics Bro!!

I also, have been doing some work on mine and I actuall was able to get some video of the Aurora in action for yopu guys. I will try to get that up in the next day of two.

OK guys, While we are waiting for Jason to get off his butt and hook us up with some pictures, I will entertain us with a small video of some takeoffs, landings and slow flybys of the Aurora. Be sure to turn up your volume for the flybys as you will get to see hear the low RPM of the motor and how little power is needed to keep this puppy in the air. I also posted a couple pics of some shoots I've done in the last week or so. One is the auction which you've already seen, the other is of particular interest as it required I fly out over water. Like WAY out over water. The client wanted lots of lake frontage to show in the picures and with the Aurora I was able to deliver. This shoot would have been a knee knocker with a heli. I was able to take off and land the Aurora on the small strip of grass right behind the gazebo. It was a KILLER application for this plane. Anyway, check it out here, and to see the video, scroll to the bottom and you will see the link to it.

OK Gang I'm going to take this opportunity to sound off a little on my Aurora Slow Stick. I did a shoot yesterday where all the R&D and hundreds of hours of work on this plane came home to roost yesterday. I pulled off one of the greatest shoots I have ever done with this stunning plane yesterday, I and will say emphatically, if it weren't for this plane, there was NO WAY short of renting a real fixed wing I would I have done this shoot. Rivers, swamps not to mention trees so thick you can't see your arm when you stick it 2 feet into them would have made doing this with a heli totally insane and if it were to go down just kiss it goodbye and walk the walk of shame back to your car and home. I'm not into embarassing myself in front of clients which is why I built this plane. Many have heard me say that the words "I can't do that shoot" are not in my vocabulary and this shoot was no exception. This plane not only made it possible but easy and FUN! This was a paying client, and had already had AP done by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game on this property in a real fixed wing and were not happy with the results. I knew this going in and knew I was going to have to perform. The object of this shoot was to get the ENTIRE property in the picture from ALL angles and it consists of around 30-40 acres. This property is in the heart of Alaskas Wilderness where the Bears and Moose roam. I showed up, drove the entire property to see what it all consisted of and then looked for the best location to take off and land so as to be able to do the entire shoot in one flight. I chose a spot as close to the middle of the property as possible and unloaded all my gear. I put the wife on camera and said" Its now or never" I hadn't even taken off before I drew a crowd of about 20 people and had to tell them politey to please leave my grass strip open for me to land. Everyone was cool and went back to their camping spots. So the wife and I get a plan. Its simple, I'll take off and you tell me how far out I need to go to get the entire property in the picture. I took off over one of the largest rivers in Alaska, the Big Susitna. I get up to a couple hundred feet and flip on my AP2000i. I then start flying away from me all the while gaining lots of altitude. I keep asking the Squeeze, "GEEZ are we there yet??!!" She kept say "No keep going!!" She has the camera pointed out the rear of the plane so she can see the property. When she finally said "OK we're there!!" I was not beliveing how far away I was. I was WAY to far out to tell what the plane was doing, and I have to tell you here that if I had not had the AP2000i, it would have been GAME OVER!! So all I know now is I'm out there and I ain't coming back without those PICTURES!! So I'm asking the wife, "Can you see the property??!!" Shes like "YES STAY OUT THERE!!!!" I'm going "Holy CRAP!!!!" So I got a plan together finally and found out from the wife looking through the camera how to get oriented and managed to get into a huge long wide sustained left turn and circled the entire property from that distance. I was able to circle the entire property twice and got every picture we needed. Then it was time to bring my baby home. I turn it in and start a LONG descent into the campground and put my baby down in perfect greased on landing. Man I set my TX down and the wife and I are Hi fiving each other Man it was AWESOME!! The entire shoot from the time I took off and landed was less than 10 minutes! I walked away $250.00 richer. I have to tell you guys, I can't even TELL you how incredibly reliable stable and just flat out PERFECT this plane is for AP. I cruise this forum and see all the posts about guys who are crashing their helis, and I will tell you straight up those days are OVER for me!!Their is simply no easier way to do AP at least for me and in the incredible place I live and its harsh conditions. A couple footnotes. First,Had I not had the wisdom to put my AP2000i on this plane, I would have lost it. This single tool is without question worth its weight in gold at least to me. Even though I couldn't see what the plane was doing very well, I didn't panic and this very cool stabilizer saved the day and kept the plane level and maintained its altitude until I got my crap together. Second, having the downlink and the camera on a 360 continuous pan also helped as the wife was able to look out all sides of the plane and give me clues as to where I needed to turn. It was awesome. Anyway, I am posting a picture taken from the shoot. I drew a couple lines showing where I took off and landed. At the end of the line that comes over the parking lot is my wife and I right next to a white picinic table. Gives you a little perspective on how far away I was. Also, that is my flight path for landing. Sorry for getting so long.
