UAV Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles > UAVs for inventory of crops

I’m looking for a company that sells UAVs for inventory of crops.

A year ago I read about a company that were using electric airplanes with GPS and a digital camera (think it was a Pentax or Panasonic).

The Plane was launched from the ground and then covered some acres using a predefined pattern. When the plane was back on the ground the pictures were downloaded to the laptop with the GPS data, the pictures were then stitched together and placed over a map.

It were then possible to determine if the crops were damaged by noxious insects.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Best regards
Dan

The Yamaha RMAX is used for that in Japan at least.

Major $s involved though..

Well, the RMAX is a bit too much; there must be a more price effective solution to the problem.

Try Cropcam.com, they have a very affordable glider system and they are fabulous people to work with.

Hi,DanP,

Like flightgeist said, you should contact CropCam.
www.cropcam.com
Their sales director is Ms. Lisa Shaw and her email is:
lshaw@MICROPILOT.com

I have a project where we purchased one of their UAVs and it's great. For about $7,000 US you get the electric-powered UAV, ground station, software, etc. All you have to buy is a digital camera (<$200) and a six-channel RC outfit. In its simplest mode, you use their canned flight program, stand in the corner of your field, initialize plane and ground station, then throw the plane into the air. It climbs to altitude, flies a pattern across the area of interest, descends and lands. You take out the memory card from the camera, put it into your computer and it mosaics the images to a big high-res photo.

Ms. Shaw and the Micropilot team will be at AUVSI in Washington DC next week but I'm sure she will be checking email. Please tell her that Dave from Georgia Tech sent you. We're big fans of CropCam. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Dave

My company recently purchase a cropcam as well. It does as advertised except it doesn't land itself where you want very well. It is a great platform for shooting crops and looking for damage, it's operating altitudes are 400' to 2100' AGL. You definitely won't want to be landing on any summerfallow type fields, grass, or tall crop is best.

I also think they are going to be offering an upgraded glider soon ,as the one they currently use isn't very robust, and there are issues with the elevator/stabilizer. I'm sure the new version will be better.

There are some airplane pilots here in Tucson (TRCC Club) that work for a company (not sure of the name) that deals in autonomous aircraft.

According to one individual, they have a customer that uses their aircraft system to take aerial video autonomously so that he can manage his crops for insecticides.

I believe this is their site (Advance Ceramic Research) :

Hey, Jason,

Sorry to be so long in replying...
New upgraded glider...hmmm! I know that the old CropCam is built on the TopModel CZ "Electra Pro" ARF, since you can read that printed on the inside right fuselage side. I bought a replacement plane from NE Sailplane Products--just in case of a whoops.

Have you heard anything more about what kind of model the new, upgraded system will use?

How's your weather up in Saskatchewan? It's been over 100F here in Atlanta this past week.

Cheers and stay cool.

Hi Dave,

I'm not sure what the new glider will be, but last I heard the fusalage will be carbon fibre, and they are moving the elevator from the top of the rudder to the "normal" elevator position.

I have talked with them about a replacement airframe, but haven't heard if they will be offering one yet or not.

The weather up here hasn't been that hot, we have gotten up to 105 a couple day, but al least it cools of to the mid 70's at night. This time of year we usually have highs in the 80's and lows in the 30-40's
