e-MS Composit Hornet > XL on 4s has too much rotor torque at medium RPM:

A set of the old 'speed up gears' should increase the tail RPM by a factor of 1.125 (18T/16T in tail box). Yeilding 11.25K tail RPM at 2.5K main and 13.5K tail RPM at 3K main. 18T/16T Gears (Qty 2) $15.00 Precision tail gears and speed up gears (out of stock here, the only supplier?).

Has anyone got a set of speed up gears to sell me or know where I can get equivalent bevel gears or possibly mix and match from another heli etc.?

Best guess anyone please?

MS Hornet - bevel Tail Gears E028

The stock 18T bevel gears are identical, designed to press fit on to 2mm shafts with the 3mm extension colar to sit inside the 3mmID of the tail bearings.

Does anyone have a link to a 16T or possible equivalent that might be suitable?

have you considered longer tail blades?

I had the same problem with my streched hornet, so I bought a set of MaxiR tail blades and it is better. Haven't had much of a chance to really ring it out though so I dont know if this is the best route.

Yes, without the speed up gears it seems like the other option would be moving from 110mm to 120mm tail rotor but I wanted to avoid using the taller Walkera landing gear for ground clearance (ah eh mmm which I gave away just recently ). I may just jack up the rear LG legs, I think the stock tail rotor has 15mm ground clearance already. This is what happens when moving beyond original design spec's .

What tail blades have you tried and are on your setup now?

I have run both Y0272 48mm plastic and the Y0222 50mm J2S. I have the J2S blades on it now. I was able to go back to standard X3D landing gear also, dont recall off hand how much clearance I have but it was sufficiant in the gym but I might need to jack up the rear a bit for grass.

Forgot to mention the root on the MaxiR blades do need a bit of messaging to get a nice fit with my MH tail not sure how the fit will be in the stock grips.

Thanks, I'll have a fiddle with some MaxIR tail blades. I think MS tail blades are ~42mm so 50mm seems a good step for 126mm diameter plastic. Now I just have to find something else to make up the shipping worth while ...

yep that darn shipping, LOL.

I would suggest geting both the 48 and 50mm blades to try out. I didn't get much time on the 48's before I nicked them on the drive way and I never got them balanced very well after that.

The shape is quite differant between the two types, the 50mm J2S are very thin cord and the 48mm's are wider. They also have very differant airfoils. I wont get a chance to fly again for a while yet and I would like to hear your impression of the two blades.

Oh ya I went out and messured my clearance with the 50mm blades, I have about 9.5mm.

> The shape is quite differant between the two types...
That's good to know, I'll order both and another set of 280mm ~10g CF (paper like) blades, I'm bound to need some sooner or later . Probably take 2 weeks to get here and then some time to run tests, so I'll post back in a few weeks if I've learnt anything...

Sounds good! I hope they help with your torque issue.

Anybody have a slightly used complete stock tail assembly with box, bearings, lever, gears? I need some parts for a friend that is dissabled.

The AMA is way better than what you belong to!

Well the extra 6mm per Y0272 48mm wide plastic tail blade does have better yaw power at the same rpm. As you would expect, the bigger blades require less pitch to give the same thrust as the stock blades, which means the tail servo doesn't have to move as far as fast either. From my calculations is seems the bigger blade is more of an advantage than the extra tail rpm I was planning, for both thrust and efficiency. I estimate the situation is about 50% better and the 6mm ground clearance is not a problem so I'm happy about the new blades.

TemRex, good luck.
