Safety - RC Helis are not toys > Barrier Netting to Stop a Heli?

Does anyone use barrier netting at their field to protect spectators from helis (or other R/C aircraft)? Do you have any experiences where such netting has prevented a heli from hitting someone?

If so, what type of netting have you used or seen used (baseball, golf, knotted/non-knotted, etc.)?

i was at an RC Weight carrying competition called SAE Aerodesign when an a/c stalled on takeoff and veered right towards the crowd. They were using that plastic netting thats about 4 feet high and brightly colored. it was anchored with 1 inch OD plastic poles which allowed for a good bit of flexibility.

the plane collided with the netting and traveled maybe another foot before being stopped. there were dozens of spectators behind that netting and no one was injured.

If you avoid failure, you also avoid success.

That sounds like snow fencing - it would really obstruct your view. I was thinking about the suitability of ball netting (golf ball or baseball type - black nylon net) as it wouldn't be too visible (not bright orange), and would have give. I don't know if it would hold up to a 90 heli hitting it at speed though.

At the time I wish ours was that high. At our last fun fly in San Diego one of the 'pros' was doing an aileron tic-toc in the middle of the field when his heli went out of control and tocced over the safety fence and hit upside down right in front of the announcer's booth and just inches from a club members (the announcer) little boy!

Usually though I see plankers running into the safety fence when their landings go crazy.

Having my heli: Cool, Having a working heli: Awesome, Having a day to fly: PRICELESS!

That's what I was thinking of Tosh. Has a standard heli hit something like that and been stopped? It looks like a 90 could rip right through that and keep going like nothing happened. At the very least, surely the net would give quite a bit (move 2' or more from a direct hit). I wouldn't want to create a false sense of security.

I wonder...

Why not just put everyone in a bunker with a wide screen TV ?

I can just see it, netting covering all the people like a circus tent.

Let's go have a picnic - - no wait - - we might get struck by lightning !

Fact is more people get bitten by sharks than struck by lightening.

Oh, great, now we have to have netting to keep the sharks on the other side of the flight line.

Airwolf....Go see your Doctor. Your meds are not working.

Why do you have to be such an ass just because someone is looking into a safety measure?

I would feel pretty safe in saying that the netting would stop even a 90. You have to think, its not 1 string of fiber, its the group. Sure it may cut a section or two, but in doing so it will pull the net into the blade bringing bore strings to the center of the impact causing even more drag as well as tangling.

I played pb for years and that stuff the fields use I'm POSITIVE will almost stop a real heli.

The reason I ask is because I had my heli crash just behind the snow fencing. Small children were only 20-30' back. I felt terrible and appologized to the father profusely - he was fine because no one was hurt, but I was not.

It was only a Trex, but it got me thinking about simple safety measures. When I explained what had happened to a friend, he suggested that it would be responsible to put up some sort of netting like at the hockey rinks.

I took a quick look around on the net, and barrier netting such as that shown in the picture runs about $150 for a 30x8' section. Very inexpensive if it works.

AirWolf - looking into simple measures that can avoid injury to innocent spectators (expecially children) isn't unreasonable in my book. I'm just checking to see if it's practical or not.

The desire to be safe is ever-present.
Some people think with their emotions instead of their brain.

I keep going back to 40,000 to 50,000 deaths in cars, not trains, planes or boats, just cars per year in this country and nobody gives a dann.

Why is that ? Because I'm off my meds ?

Why these "selective" reactions ?

Why not have the spectators stand on the runway so they can get a good view? After all, they're more likely to be killed in a car.

People use safety equipment all the time in many aspects of work and play. It's there to prevent injuries. It works.

All I want to know is if this netting works in this application or not.

LMAO!!

Hey, why isn't google werking?? Ok, fixed! About that netting at the masters ... I'm sure it would stop any RC heli they throw at it, otherwise why bother? I'm sure the insurance company knows it has been tested and proven

Hey, now that I think about it, looks like the same stuff the golf course uses that keeps balls from entering roadways or in the driving range. That stuff works great, stops my 100+mph slicer dead in its tracks

HK ... In a world of compromise, some don't.

On the subject of nets stopping stuff the company I work for "is the world leader in safety and securement equipment for the aerospace, defense and ground transportation industries" (google it!) Anyway it all depends on what its made of, one of our nets is a type of Stinger Vehicle stopper it'll stop and I mean STOP a 6 ton truck doing 50mph+. The department I currently work in make and recon nets and Equipment that'll stop a fully loaded and fueled Tornado jet at take off speeds, I'm sure there is pilots here Military and Commercial that have witnessed or have knowledge of our products.

The netting looks very similar to a volleyball net. I have seen a volleyball net stop a 50 size machine dead in its tracks.

Do you live in a small box under a very large pile of rocks and never leave. Have you never seen crash barriers that absorb impact of crashing vehicles, or test done on cars to prevent injury to pedestrians or speed limits being lowred or cops with speed guns to slow people down or......................... the list is endless what is done to reduce deaths caused by cars to pedestrians and the vehicles inhabitants.
