Hello,
Has anyone tried a different set of blades other then the stock wooden ones? I know NHP has a set for around $250. I also see the Heli-max has some that may work.
Thanks! Mark

So far, on my Vertol, I've only used the stock wood blades. I've heard that the NHP blades don't work as well because they are full-symmetrical vs the stock semi-symmetrical. Hirobo also makes glass blades PN 0406-086 (left rotation) & 0406-087 (right rotation). You need to buy both sets though as they can't be mixed with the wood blades. They probably are pretty pricey, never got the courage to ask.

Thanks FB, I'll check with MRC/Altech and see what the Hirobo ones are going for and I'll post it as soon as I find out.

The Hirobo GRP blades are great.

Save lots of money and get them shipped direct from Japan.

With the shipping costs these days, I dunno about that.

Have you got a set and flown them?

So far I have 2 complete sets for myself and another Chinook flyer.

Yes, I have flown them and they feel smoother than the wooden blades and FAR better than the NHP symetrical blades.
Probably due to more inertia?

The cost in the UK, if they could be got, would be stupid.
So for this country, it's much cheaper to get from Japan direct.

Did you buy them directly from Hirobo or someone else...???? I doubt that Hirobo would sell them directly to anyone in the US...they would force them to go through MRC/Altech since they are the importer in the US.....

Holy cr#p, what are they made of some kind of golden fiber. Thats ridiculous. I thought someone said they were cheaper than the woodies. Thanks for the info.

The cheapest I've been able to find so far is $230 a set ($560 total) in Hong Kong. Looks like I'll be going with another set of woodies...which will still be around $200!!!!! I'm thinking about trying to modify a set of 30 size regular woodies...cut the cord, add weight to the leading edge, and flattening out the bottom on a planer........Mark

Modtron Hi,

We met at the Vario fly in several weeks ago and we spoke about this subject.

Do you happen to have a part number please for the glass blades.

I just ordered some cheap 520mm woodies that I'm going to try and modify and see how they work. If it works out, they will only cost around $50 for a full set minus the labor involved in modifying. I will keep everyone posted. Mark

Hi Camel Jokey,

As Free Bird posted -
0406-086 (left rotation)
0406-087 (right rotation)

I know they are expensive - but still cheaper from Japan and I still love em.

I'm off flying the Lama again this weekend - hope the weather holds out.

Wooden Blabes

I have just bought a Hirobo Chinook and have found the finish on the blades very poor with a brittle covering, very poor considering the price of the kit they should have been fibreglass. What I did was to take the covering off and recover using sticky back fablon the way blades used to be done, this was done up to the blade root and the rest painted black. The blades where then weighed CofG done and balanced all blades found to be very close and look so much better. When fitted and tested none needed any tracking adjustment.I have ordered a set of NHP blades which I will try.As you have all said belt tension is another problem 3mm at 1 pound push or 1 ton ?

I just got back from the Hirobo Grand Event, and the scale turnout was very impressive. There were at least 25 scale machines in attendance and most were flown to good effect.

Anyway, back to blades - Jeff Green had his CH-47 present and he had the new composite blades fitted. They were a very dark grey, almost black in color. I talked with him about their flight performance, and he said that they worked well. The biggest surprise was that they are a lot easier to turn and require more pitch to keep from over-speeding. They did look very good compared to the stock wood blades though as they complete the look of the heli.....
