we have a large plot of grass to cut, probably a good 2 acres or better.
our 10 year old sears rider with a koehler engine is starting to go and my wife really wants a zero turn radius mower.
she works at lowe's and we were up there looking at them today, they look really nice and all but the $3000.00 price tag is kinda high!
she does get a 10% discount and we do need something that can take some abuse, they call her the mario andretti of lawn cutting.
seems kind of hard to tell her she can't have one after all the freaking money I spend on my heli's?
I was just wondering what they ride like, speed and so forth, not like lowe's is going to let you test drive one right?

I just bought a Hustler Super Z for my 5 acres and love it. It is more of a commercial mower and quite a bit more than $3000. More like 3 times that. I looked at the ones at Lowes and was planning on something about $4000 but they looked pretty cheaply made so I decided to spend more on something that would last a long time rather than buy a cheap one every couple of years.

My Stepdad owns his own landscaping company and owns 2 zero-turn riding mowers. He has a Hustler that he uses the most and a Walker when he needs to catch the grass clippings. Both mowers were $10000+, but they are commercial grade mowers. If you want a mower to have really good dependability and low maintenence cost, than one of the commercial mowers is the way to go. They cost more, but they typically last longer and provide a better cut.

I bought a Kubota diesel zero turn and love it. It cut my mowing time in half. My yard is about 2.5 acres and I'll never have anything else.

I have used a scag with 27hp kawasaki on it its great they take a bit of getting used to but they are worth it. they are vary pricey. have you thought of a walk behind with a ride on platform. Just make sure what ever you buy you get a kawaski engine they are the best out there i have one going on 17 year of service never a problem yes they are more but are worth the money Hope this helps

Dixon/Kohler 50" here. I mow .75 in about 30 minutes and would never own a non-ZTR mower again.

thank's for the reply's,
we are going to try and nurse the sears one as long as we can but you can just tell when they get to that age where everything is falling apart and it's just not worth it to keep trying to doctor it up anymore.
I will say that the one thing it will not be is a briggs,we blew up the engine in our first rider in less than tewlve months just due to the poor design.
did any of the places let you drive the zero turn before you bought it?
I can't see spending that kind of money and just hoping that it is fast enough for mrs.andretti.

I am pretty sure most Hustler dealers will let you demo one. I think most of the other brands dealers have demo machines as well. I agree it is a large chunk of change for a mower but most of the commercial units will last us homeowners for a very long time. Hustler has some smaller units that aren't too pricey. The Fasttracks and Mini Zs look pretty good and some of the larger ones would probably do your 2 acres pretty quickly.
Here is a website that has their MSRP's. As with all MSRP's they are higher than actual cost.

I bought a grasshopper 48" cut ($5800)sold it after a year it is a great mower but way over kill for my 1.5 acres. I did a lot of research and bought a country clipper jazzie one cost $2900 out the door has a commercial welded deck yada, yada I've had it 3 years now and it works great and cost half what the GH did. You should take a look at the clipper line before you buy.

well for mother's day I bought her a new zero turn mower from lowe's!!

Gotta love a wife who would rather have a new zero turn mower than some fancy jewelry or some flowers that are going to die for mother's day!!

I ended up getting the troy built with a 22 hp kohler engine and 50" deck, she tried it out last night and really seems to like it.

just gonna take a little time to get used to the controls.

I bought a Dixie Chopper, the Worlds fastest Lawn mower! It has an electric height adjustable deck and costs about $7500. They are usually a lot more but the dealer was forced to take one when he became a dealer and the professionals dont want electric decks, so I got mine slightly under invoice.

So I am happy to mow my 6 acres in about 1.5 hours even in 95 degree heat, as I am always in a 15mph wind.

I've got a toro z-master, love it. Cuts the grass pretty quick, but I only mow about an acre and a half. Great heigth adjustment, mows nice and even. I have a mulching kit on it and it chops everything, no clippings to pick up.

I bought it from ace hardware, as a demo, it had ten hours on it when I got it. I called them and told them I was going to buy a mower, they came with a truck and trailer, and 5 different mowers. I was able to try them all out on my yard and buy the one I wanted. Try and do something like that, it was great to see what worked best on my individual yard. The z-master doesn't like to sidehill or ride some ditches and slopes but I pick up the little stuff with a cheap push mower in ten minutes.

They are pricey though...

Can I borrow your wife once a week ??

I have a 52 inch zero turn for 5 years and will never use anything else. The way you can trim right up to the edge is great, no mechanical transmission to change gears to back up or go from ultra slow to fast.

Support bacteria. They're the only culture some people have. !
