I believe that was from around the mid 80's. It was suppose to take off veritcally then once in forward flight, the jet engines would take over and the rotor would stop, locked in one position and help with lift. I never saw one actually achieve this.

The theory behind this craft is to lift off like a helicopter then transition into forward flight. Once in forward flight the main rotors stop and 'park' in the shape of an x. The concept is for a sub sonic flight from a rotory wing aircraft. If this works it will revolutionise the way helicopters fly. It has been under development since the mid 80's.

what ever the hell it is..if the engine dies, you can do an auto, or just fly it down
if im not mistaken,(which i could be) the last i heard they grounded the ospreys.. unexplained power loss.. ill have to do some digging to see if i can find anything to back this up.. but im pretty sure they are grounded tho.... hmmm

True jim.. the osprey was grounded for awhile.. (killing too many marines .. but they haven't given up hope on that flying POS.. Boeing said they have suffered minor (like they were really minor) setbacks and will give the military the product they purchased.... I am just glad I dont have to fly on it...
