Main Discussion > Problems with CSM 540 gyro

I'm flying a Baron S with a CSM 540 gyro and a Futaba 9205 on the tail. My ATV's arein heading hold) Gear 20% Rudder 90%.

Here is my problem, when I start it up and it's just about to lift off their is violent tail movement. The tail moves 90 degrees each way. I bring it up into a hover and it continues, then when I get it into forword flight it seems to die down to about 5-10 degrees, so I thought at this point that it was fixed. Then when I brought it back into a hover at the end of the tank of gas the tail was violent again with 90 degree movements. This has happened several flights and I don't know what it could be? I have adjusted the gain on the gear channel, recalabrated the gyro and messed with the throttle needle. Do I need a new tail servo? A new gyro?

Thanks

are you running the 9205 in 'super' mode on the gyro? if you are,
you shouldn't be. You dont mention as to whether it ever worked
correctly or if this a new development.

What is super mode?
I got this heli used and pretty beat. I completely cleaned it up and everything works great but the tail. I don't know the previous condition.

Thanks Brian Bills

when you went through the calibration and setup procedure
(you did do that, right?) on thhe CSM540, did you set it to run
in super mode. ie. is the Super LED on the case lit up?

A friend of mine set it up, so I don't know. Will you tell me the setup procedures?

Thanks Brian Bills

You can check out Bob Johnston's site on the CSM and also go to the CSM company site where you can download a copy of the manual for this GYRO. http://www.bobj.co.uk/CSM/csm.htm This is the Johnston site. I agree make sure you are in correct servo mode. Follow the instructions first. Also I had a similar problem and mine was more from a poor tail servo pitch slider connection and an imbalanced tail rotor.

Hope this helps.

Set up on the 540 is really easy. To answer your question right off about the super servo setting though, Check to see if the (green light) is on on the front of the gyro when the heli is on. If it is, then the super servo setting is activated. That is probably your problem with the tail as the super servo setting is made to run with servos that are .09 to .10.

As for setting one up, Its simple. Turn on the transmitter and then the heli. As soon as you turn on the heli, within a few seconds toggle your gear switch on the tx (the switch that you have HH set up on). This should put the gyro in set up mode. Move the rudder right or left to set the reverse on the gyro, One way will turn the reverse light on, the other will turn the light off. After you have it either reversed (lit) or not, toggle the HH switch. then follow the same process for the Super Servo setting. Once you have the light off in your case, toggle the HH switch. The gyro will then go into end point travel adjustments on the tail. Use the rudder on the radio to set them where you want. Set one side, then toggle the HH switch, Set the other side then toggle the HH switch. After your finished with all this the servo will move the tail back and forth a few times indicating that it has taken the new settings. Turn the heli and transmitter off for 15 sec and then back on. Everything at this point should be good to go for you.

Start with your gain in HH set to about 45% and go up from there as needed depending on your servo and its speed.

I have the 540 and 8700G combo and my gain is set at 75%.

Hope this helps.

You might want to check the T/R bearings in the T/R grips and also check for free T/R pitch change movement...if it's not something wrong with the servo/gyro setup then these are two things that can cause the tail to zip back and forth as the linkage or bearings "stick" and then pop loose, stick, pop loose...etc. Chris

When calabrating the gyro, how do I turn the super servo off?

Thanks

HeliHead1... re-read ,Smokinjo's post.

If you enter setup, you toggle the gyro switch and to change the setting from super servo to regular you simply move your rudder stick left or right depending on the settings of your radio and watch the light on the gyro, whichever way turns the super servo light off that is where you leave it. Immediately hit the gyro switch again and monitor the tail rotor to make certain it cycles back an forth confirming your choice.

You need to power down the gyro and power back up for changes to be active. You want to be careful, you may damage a servo if it isn't s "super servo" and you try to run the gyro in SS mode.

Smokinjo accurately describes the setup and if you follow it you shouldn't have any problem.
